tensioner pulley i believe is a common culprit...
my car has it as well right now, very noisy...
So sounds to me like financially you're up for a somewhat difficult year. With that, a car with unknown history comes onto the market that "seems to fit the bill perfectly" it ain't perfect though... and is too good to be true but you want to take a risk anyway...
doesn't it sound a little obvious when it's laid out like that?
sure your car isn't perfect now, but at least you know its history and those things can be fixed. You're falling into the marketer's dream of "limited time offer". Sure sure Type S's are hard to find but why not just stick this one out, and wait till a better offer comes around? If not.. maybe in a few years a better car will come through and you can get that one instead.

Idk maybe its the impulsive side of me or maybe it's cos my wife isn't here to tell me "No, slow down, think it over." but I feel like sometimes you gotta take chances.
My other car ('11 G37x) I got it in 2013 at 17k miles for 18.5 out the door because it had been registered a lemon. The first guy took it home and said the next day it wouldn't start. Infiniti took the car back and rebuilt the engine from the ground up and put 3 different warranties on it just in case but that wasn't enough to please the guy and he filed it under the lemon law (I think he was trying to get out clean)
Curently @48K the car the car runs perfectly and has no issues.
But what do I know. I'm no professional, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

It's not like we're struggling- I mean, I was entertaining the idea of buying an NSX but that car would have been paid for by the money coming from the Miata sale and the rest covered by a loan. With the TL, I don't want to sell mine and then have to pay a few extra thousand out of pocket for the same car, you know? Those dollars will be used on other things.
I've always wanted a white 6MT type s. Before I bought my TL, there was none available though. I looked and waited for months, but nothing. Even this one I'm not overly keen on, even though I can fix whatever isn't up to par. My biggest fear is what is unknown that will need replacing soon enough.
But alas, you're right Johnny. I just have that stupid itch. Gah....

cul0's Fukkin-LA saga, part 2:
Turn Signals!
So, in Tejas, using the turn signal is a sign of weakness. Say you're blasting down the highway, doing 35 in a 65 and need to get over two lanes... What do you do? Turn on the indicator and wait for an opening? Nope. Sorry pardner, you've just declared that you're a weak little pussyman and no one will dare to let you over. In fact, they'll go out of their way to block you out. So if you need to change lanes, you just go for it; maybe give a quick turn signal flash as you're crossing over the lane lines, which shows you're a manly-man with an enlarged peenus and F-you to everyone else. In Tejas, when you see a car with a turn signal on, it's most likely that the driver is unaware it's on.
But LA... I had the weirdest experience because it's so foreign that people actually use the turn signal to communicate their intentions. For example, I was on the highway, barreling along doing approximately 0 in a 65 and needed to get over a couple lanes for an exit. So I gritted my teeth and put on the indicator, mentally preparing myself for the obtuse rejection and ridicule I was due for even fathoming to commit such an offense. But then, nearly immediately, the car directly behind and to the side of me stopped and made a gap for me to slip into. I. Was. Flabbergasted.
Couple that with the absolute expertise that nearly every driver shows for "zippering" when two lanes of traffic merge, and I really must begrudgingly admit that *one* positive of visiting L.A. is that while traffic is an absolute shitshow, the driver's are pretty pro.
Everything else can suck a fat diseased one though.

LOL...has one good experience with an LA driver and thinks LA drives are nice.
I mean, maybe they are but do more research!
Shoot, everyone in South Florida does not but I always signal intent and always back off to let people in that do as well. If you're just a Dbag though and don't signal and don't zipper properly my rage-o-meter goes off and it's on like cheech and donkey kong.
That was a fun read, Joe.

I rarely experience that...
People use signals more than here in NC that's for sure... But in the SGV area, traffic always backs up because the older barely know how to merge..
Or have I become so desensitized that they're really not that bad at all...

I hate you, J. Because of all of this excitement, I started looking for a Type S again. And found one.
It's the same one I talked about, maybe just over a week ago. It's up for sale again. I think the owner travels for work, so he pulled the ad when he had to leave again.
But I dunno, something isn't sitting right with me, regarding that car. He said he had the clutch and master cylinder replaced, because apparently the master cylinder crapped out, causing the clutch to burn out in two weeks time. He had someone test drive the car and apparently the starter shit the bed the second time he tried starting it. It's now been replaced also.
I've never heard of a master cylinder failure causing a clutch to wear out. I'm not saying it's not possible, but I've just never heard it before. I've also never really heard about the starter failing on these cars.
Mileage is a wash. My current TL is sitting at 82000 miles. This one is at 86000 miles.
I have four gripes with this Type S:
1. It has the oem wheels, but they're curbed to shit apparently. He said he bought the wheels after buying the car (never came with the car, from the previous owner).
2. Doesn't have a-spec kit. I can't just transplant mine from my base to the Type S.
3. The car is white, but apparently the previous owner backed into something, causing paint to be scratched off, down to the black plastic.
4. Owner claims the timing belt service was done by previous owner, however, there is zero documentation of this. I don't want to pay for it.
Beyond that, the price seems too good to be true. There are 3 6MT Type Ss available, within a 300km range. One is 18.5k. Another is 15k. This one is 11.5k. It is located 3 hours from me, which doesn't help either. I'm wondering if this is just a case of "it's too good to be true".
I can live with the curbed up waffle wheels- I'd keep my current TL summer wheels, and use the waffles for winter. The rear bumper can be repainted, though it'll cost me $500. And if I want the kit, well, I'd be forced to pay like 2000 for it.
Thoughts?

Last time he was selling it for 12k I think. Now he dropped it to 11.5k.
We all know that Type Ss don't last. Especially at that price. Maybe you're right.
The two other ones available are the two colors I don't want, so they're completely out of question. I guess it should ring alarm bells if I can get a Type S for the same price I can sell my Base.
I dunno... I guess I'm just getting the itch to get into something else. I feel that even though I dumped a shit ton of money into mine to bring it up to the condition I like, it's not perfect yet. I have an oil leak which would require me to remove the timing belt to get at, my serpentine belt is getting noisy when it is cold out- I'm actually not sure what is making the sound, to be honest. Not sure if it's the power steering pump, or the belt itself. I never replaced it. Not sure what else would make a bit of a groaning sound on that side of the engine.
That, and I'll likely need a clutch eventually, especially if I take my TL to the track this year for some auto cross. Now that will be expensive to replace. Other than that, errrthang is good, but I dunno... Gah... The itch...
I can't afford moving into a more expensive car this year. We already know it's gonna be an expensive year, with all the shit we have to take care of. That's why that type S was nice... Just a straight up swap...

But what do I know. I'm no professional, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
You sound like you're facing some of the same issues I am. I went from a car that needed zero things done to it, to one that needs TLC and some maintenance and some sprucing up. I mean, mechanically, it's sound...and a beast, at that. I have had some back and forth emotions on whether or not I should have done it because my black one was the evil I know. I know what happens to it, I know how to fix it, I know what'll need addressing soon. But the allure of the color I wanted, and the price that I couldn't turn down was a bit too much for me to pass on.
The way I ended up looking at it...if I got up to Ohio and it was not what I thought, or needed more than I could deal with, I'd just clean it up and could get out of it for at the VERY least what I paid for it. That alone, mentally, gave me a sense of relief since nothing but time would have been lost...no financial loss.
To be honest, my first drive of the car...I was like "dafuq did I just do" because the clutch pedal needed adjusting, it was 10 degrees out and the aftermarket clutch didn't feel smooth. But, the deal was done, the loan was taken and I still told myself to be cool and it'll all work out. After a quick tweaking of the clutch pedal by the mechanic that installed it...it drove great and every gear was smooth. Car was fun, car was fast, car got me home after a 1200 mile drive without any issues or headaches on $97 of fuel with a 1/2 tank to spare...but when I pulled into my driveway and parked behind my 04...I got very sad again and though...DAFUQ DID I DO!?!?!?
But, alas...the journey is part of the fun...I'm overwhelmed because I have so many little projects and things I need to transfer over and with the limited time with the baby...
I am still confident though, that at the end of the day, I'll have upgraded to a TL that (when I'm done) will be worth a TON more than my base is now that they're both pretty much fully depreciated. I know that a FS thread for a KBP 6MT will be closed immediately whereas another NBP base, would likely sit for a while.
Anyway, as soon as I started cleaning her up and changing some things she started to feel like mine. You and I are in the same boat in that we have a 2nd car, and are not exactly at the last 1000 in our savings account. So, the price is good enough for the car you describe to fix wheels, paint bumper, get aspec lip kit (bruce sells the whole thing for $860 IIRC)...even replace clutch if need be. Master issue might have been applying constant pressure to the clutch and burned it like riding it? Anyway, that said...with $3-4K you will have a type S that will make you happy...that will be perfect and mechanically sound...and you'll STILL only be at $15K. AND you'll know the car inside and out and it'll give you pride to know you put the work in.
That's how I'm looking at the KBP...I got a killer deal with a lot of quality parts included and now I'm putting in the work to clean it up, swap out rusty bolts and screws, suspension, wheels...and then the car will be worth what a KBP 6MT is worth.
If you are up for the headaches you'll need to address (none of which will likely leave you stranded, you know these cars)...and don't mind putting in a little elbow grease and some cash...I think it'll feel really rewarding to get the 3G you always wanted. I know I feel that way...like, I'm a huge fan of the 3G and what better 3G can you own than a type S? I know that down the line, it'll be perfect. The feeling of not wanting to change, is natural...I have an emotional attachment to a thing. The Dalai Lama would not be proud. But in the end, it's a car...and this is a better car. I am happy.

I always run my V1 so I know VA/DC is the ONLY state/pseudo-state that doesn't allow it. A majority of states don't allow laser jammers either (CA being one of them )
Wasn't sure if J was driving through VA or not, but when he called, I reminded me to stash that mofo because it would have definitely given you a nice ticket.
