Right. I think you mentioned that at least a half dozen times. Me and my forgetfulness.

So I've been thinking... (Oh no!)
I think I want an aritificial turf putting green in my backyard this summer. I had a landscape contractor get back to me and he wanted $2400 for the installation of a 10x13' kidney bean shaped putting surface. If I wanted to add an 18" wide ring of "fairway" grass around that, it would be a total of $3500. Man, that's expensive.
I found another website where they sell the artificial turf for $5/sqft. So for the same 10x13' size, I'd be paying $650. I really think I can do this myself for no more than $1000... I'm very interested!!

It sounds easy, right? But the subtle undulations you want in a putting green would be hard to build yourself, IMO.
I'm sure there are tons of videos and DIYs out there though.

I dunno, I find it hard to believe that when I google who does these kinds of installs, that the tiny, two man, fly by night landscaping company has any much more skill in installing one of these
I'll buy the material and try it. If I fail, I'll call a contractor in to finish the job.

I think putting on your weed infused grass on uneven surfaces will actually really improve your putting game on a well kept green.
I worked at golf course once...got fired for putting a golf cart in a hazard and not saying anything about it.

J, I currently have no grass
My house is surrounded by nothing but clay at the moment. Not even any topsoil yet. I have to have the grading around the house approved by the city, for the first 10 feet, but beyond that, I can do as I please (for the most part). That putting turf is awesome shit... Just roles out.
I agree with you and chad though... Gonna have to do some serious grade/prep work before slapping that turf down. But it's at most, like 130sqft. Not the end of the world.

I really want to set up either a horse shoe, bocce ball, or a corn-hole area in my back yard.

How bad is it that I had to highlight that post to make sure there was no white text?

So, my current place, is generally free of any vegetation except for a small square of grass in the back and the entire rest of the property is rectangles of landscaping rock. No, unlike some horrid , I do maintain this by using lots of weed-killer and killing anything non-rock that shows up. The grass gets treated with anti-weed crap too.
The maintenance takes about 20 minutes tops per week during the warm seasons. If I'm not cutting the grass with my non-petrol lawnmower (push only), it takes maybe 5 minutes of spraying around the blue stuff to kill weeds.
Anyhow...for the new place, same strategy...and I'm now considering artificial grass as well. Except, per what you wrote, it is f*cking expensive for the amount I intend to make "grass". Does not make sense. I'm also considering a DIY version but everywhere I read the same thing: packing the surface underneath is uber-uber-uber critical. So, above all, be careful of that...be especially deliberate with the packing and materials you use before you lay the faux-grass.
Good ruck.

Thankfully, the new place's backyard will be even smaller...
We have a walk-out...and so, the concrete pad will take up real estate in the backyard...so, all I need to worry about is the crap around the house and what's left-over for the backyard. I'm considering getting concrete poured from the front to back versus landscaping that with rocks to make some steps.
We'll see which is cheaper.
For the yard itself, on the peripherals, I'll employ the same design: Large rectangles worth of landscaping rocks (different types of gray for coloring and maybe Montana rainbow to signify the :ghey: )...and then, a small recat

I had front and back rock yards in Arizona. Back yard had an artificial putting green and chipping zone.
Nearly zero maintenance. If I have the chance in the future, that's exactly what I'd do.
Took a little while for the dogs to come to terms with it, but they dealt.

G'dammit. Pretty sure the new girl keeps giving me looks.
Also I take great pride in having a nice lawn. And getting outside for an hour a week to maintain it is fulfilling.

I love landscaping. Easy to maintain landscaping, that is. I'm not really into flower beds and various plants, as nice as they are, but it's too much to maintain. I like trees, shrubs, mulch, rocks, and some grass. I'm not the biggest fan of grass either. Drives me bananas when you see new homes with zero landscaping besides grass. Lazy fucks.
I don't mind cutting the grass once a week. Beyond that, maybe trim the trees and shrubs once every two years.

A friend's parents have this big yard and they did an entire rock garden and it looks wonderful. They did it about 20 years ago and do little to maintain it. I remember when they were doing the landscaping, they had a truck come in with a big ass crane to drop a boulder the size of a civic hatchback in the back. I can't even imagine the cost for something like that.
