It may sound cheesy as fuck, but maybe familiarize yourself with the fundamentals of the 12-step programs.

The first step is basically realizing/admitting you have a problem and then you realize/admit you want help or want to change the behaviors.

Without the honest desire to change, one will not change.

Alcoholic gonna alcoholic, junkies gonna junkie and, unhealthies are gonna unhealthy.

If he doesn't want to change he won't change.

Interventions, counseling, medical course of action may all help, but he's got to want to change.

I know people who have made it and I used to know people who weren't able to make it. And I know people who are struggling because they don't want to change even though they really should.

But you got to want it.

I wasn't thinking about some sort of fad diet, but trying to instill a lifestyle change into him. They're old school and they dont really understand what it means to eat well. My old man thinks a piece of bread with cheese is healthy. It's fucking horrible for his heart. I'm going to try and have a conversation with him tonight. Basically tell him, look, you need to decide when you want to go out. And if you want to keep eating, you need to let us know if we are burying you in Spain, because neither of us knows what to do with a corpse, 8000km from home.

Harsh but true. I'm surprised he isn't diabetic yet, but probably not far from it. But he does high cholesterol, high blood pressure, sleep apnea for sure. It's killing my mom and that's the worst part. She takes care of herself pretty well, but he's just awful.

I'm essentially going to create a meal plan for him. Told my mom to put a lock and chain on the fridge when she gets back. I dunno man, he always rides my ass about diabeetus, for which I have pretty solid control over, but then totally neglects himself. Fuck he's even snoki g like a chimney here. Told my mom he would only have four smokes per day. It's more like four per hour. Just zero self control.

I don't want him to die. And I know there will be a fight, but so be it. I can't just sit idly by. It's awful.

He's on all sorts of meds. Has been to the hospital four times in the last three years because of his heart. Like wtf.

But it's been generally just my mom dealing with him. I think there needs to be a concentrated effort from the whole family. Like you said FJ, maybe the 12 steps are necessary.

He gets new pills and thinks he's in the clear again. Those things can't save you. They can help but they aren't a cure.

He won't do any physical activity. Says his knees hurt. Refuses to even go for walks. That's why I want to cut his weight down. I can definitely help with that. I can't do much for his heart though.

That's brutal, Taco...
curious why it's such a critical thing right now on this trip though...is it just because you normally don't see it and your Mom does? Is he trying to go out on this trip or are these just his normal habits and he's a 73 year old grown man that doesn't want to be told what to do?

My ex father in law was like that...he had a substance abuse issue 20 years ago...when he kicked that he turned to food and cigarettes. Every year or so he would end up in the hospital unable to breath and freaking out...always claims the doctors say he's healthy as an ox and it's just the fried shit he eats and his lack of a gallbladder to process it. Within a few weeks he's always back to smoking and drinking and eating whatever. I used to tease him that I wasn't going to make him a grandchild if he wasn't going to live to watch it grow up. He thinks he's on borrowed time anyway...he says he should have been dead a long time ago. I gave up trying to talk him out of it and just accepted it was part of what made him him even if he kicked it sooner than I wanted.

Waiting for this new job to call me. Hope I get it. Can work from home when I'm working on projects. They said middle of this week or later this week. The waiting game sucks!

Honestly, I've always been aware of it but never really saw it first hand. It's been getting progressively worse since he hit 65... Makes sense, right? But I wasn't living at home by then. I just figured it was the same old, same old.

My parents booked us into a hotel resort here in Spain, with all inclusive meals and drink and shit, so we wouldn't be drugged and raped and robbed. Plus, they're older and as much as I dislike resorts, they're more into them now.

So we go eat here three times a day. Food is ok. Kind of hard to eat healthy, but I think I've done alright. I load half my plate with veggies, then whatever the cleanest protein is, and top it off with a bit of carbs. My old man goes straight for the fries and cheese platters first. Then whatever other greasy shit. Then he hits the dessert bar, at least once, for every meal. Sometimes twice. And he tops it off with sugary pops on top. I'm like dude, you cannot eat like that! Watch what I'm doing! I'm never hungry throughout the day but I'm also not killing myself. I hit the dessert bar maybe once every two to three DAYS. He likes veggies yet in the 7 days we have been here, he has eaten less than I have in a single meal.

Then he starts smoking like a chimney here. Way more then he does back at home. His excuse is he's on vacation.

At night, he keeps my mom and I up, because he can't sleep. He can't sleep because he can't breathe. For every breath I take, he literally takes two. You can hear him choking.

It breaks my fucking heart watching what he's doing to himself. I've never seen it like this. And it scares the shit out of me now.

Just read through your situation, sorry to hear. At some point you just gotta let people do what they want despite the fact that it's hurting themselves and others around them. There's something to be said about 'happiness'. My father has all the symptoms of Crohn's disease but it was never diagnosed properly due to shitty doctors and his inability to stop eating certain things or watch what he eats to figure out what the triggers are. There were many bouts of vomiting and loss of nutrients and he's lost a lot of weight. My family and I keep telling him what he needs to do but he doesn't want to do it so I've just about given up and just decided to let him do what he wants and be happy.

I would suggest juicing as starters...can't go cold turkey on a person who loves their food like that. But, juicing can be tasty and a good start. Baby steps?

Try to get him on JUUL or some other smoking alternative bullshit
It won't stop him from smoking, but it cuts the tar
Probably better for his lungs, maybe possibly help with the apnea

As far as the eating and drinking, you ain't changing that shit

Thanks guys... you’ve been gents.

I was able to have a chat with my old man tonight. He’s been receptive to it. I even mentioned the smoking thing earlier in the day and he’s seemingly cut it down today, which is nice to see.

There was a time when I hated my old man with a passion. I used to hope he would drop dead. But these days, I don’t want him to go. Not yet. Not like this. It was a huge generational gap between him and I. He was 40 when I was born. But, once I moved out, our relationship started to drastically improve.

I’m sure his heart will do him in eventually, whether it’s a stroke or heart attack. His heart is severely plugged up at this point. But... if I can give him another five years, I’d be happy. I don’t think all the weight loss in the world can save his heart at this point, but at least he can avoid the diabeetus and other bullshit like sleep apnea.

It will be some trying times, but I asked him to give me four solid months. I can have him drop 30 pounds in that time and I think if he sees the results, it’ll motivate him to continue on his own. Or at least buy him some time.

Thing is, my old man isn’t even a drinker. Like, not at all. He’ll have one beer but nurse it for an hour. Or only finish half. Maybe a bit of wine for dinner, but that’s fairly rare, too. But here, having the old school cheap immigrant values, he’s trying to get his money’s worth on the all inclusive bullshit

And Spain fucking blows for beer. Literally everywhere you go, it’s Estrella Damm on tap. Many places ONLY have it, and nothing else. Some have like one or two other beers. It’s the Budweiser of beer, here. I mean, it’s not bad, but sure as fuck isn’t flavor country, that’s for sure.

Also, one thing I’ve noticed...

Polish chicks’ legs: 10/10
Polish chicks’ ass: 0/10

Spanish chicks’ legs: 10/10
Spanish chicks’ ass: 10/10

seriously, I have to look at 20 Polish chicks to see one half decent ass. Most have NO ass whatsoever. I don’t get it. Even back in dreadmonton, the Polish chicks pack more ass.

Eat a late breakfast and early dinner, short walk after dinner, no snacks, could make a world of difference
He can still eat garbage, cut out some over the top shit, easy lifestyle change

Probably the best bet mang.. most difficult part will be the short walk.. need mom to force him.
Tell her to hold out on the punani letting pops put his meat in her taco

I think it’s because most Polish chicks I knew/know were always involved in Polish dancing (not to be confused with Pole dancing, which I’m sure some do anyway). They always had ass in dem pants. And yeah, there are the poutine eating ones too. Some good cushion for the pushin.

I got the feeling that fitness ain’t as much a big thing in Poland. I dunno. I could be wrong. I saw a couple gyms, but it feels like there are more back home.

Either way, very disappointing, to say the least.
