Question 105k Service Cost

My local indy Acura shop in Atlanta is quoting $2,200 for the 105k service on my 06 TL. Service includes:

Timing belt
Timing belt auto-tensioner
Timing belt tensioner pulley
Idler pulley
Serpentine belt
Water pump
Coolant service
Valve adjustment

I’ve used this shop since I bought the car 4 years ago with 72k miles, and always found their prices very fair. But does $2,200 sound high for this service?

Thanks

The parts are very overpriced right now in addition to labout rates going up. I recommend just buying the AISIN kit and letting a mechanic do the work. It'll be likely half the cost. Also you forgot to include the spark plugs as well, its due at that mileage.

You’re right, I forgot to list spark plugs - good catch. Didn’t know about the parts kit, I’ll check that out. Thanks!

It's been coming up a lot lately so it's worth repeating: If you get the parts yourself, get them from RockAuto and not Amazon or eBay.

Also, if they're going in for a valve adjustment, you might as well do the valve cover gaskets.

I'm guessing the shop you got the quote from is sourcing parts from Acura?

If so, then asking them to source the Aisin kit may help.

If not...then that's their price, and yes it seems quite high.

Spark plugs can be sourced from Rockauto.

Nobody does cam and front main seals while they do the 105K service? Gamblers, are we?

I'd suggest doing those 3 seals. They're inexpensive enough.

If your oil pump is leaking, its smart to tag the re-seal on. But its definitely gonna add cost

I haven't really heard of people needing to replace those seals. Those are spring-loaded seals. If those are going bad then you're valve seals are going bad as well at which point you're likely to total the vehicle with repair costs. I recommend just sticking to premium high mileage oil. Theres plenty of TLs going over 300K without ever needing them. The rear main seal however is a different story.

But you do have a point regarding the oil pump gasket leaking. @JD1013 If you've never done it before its likely a good idea to get it done if you plan on keeping it more than 5 years. That gasket is notorious for going bad on TLs, It'll be cheaper to get it done during the timing belt. As for the sparkplugs just stick to OEM, hell you can even do it yourself, its pretty straight forward. The AISIN kit is TKH-002.

I had mine done @ Hendric Acura (their parts) in Charlotte couple years ago, $1250.00 but no valve adjustment, can't remember if I got plugs. BTW just had my local mechanic install AC compressor kit.Rock Auto $270 + labor $400. Had good luck with RA on most parts, But if it's electrical I go with OEMAcuraParts. The RA pressure switches 3rd & 4th gear crapped out after 2 months. Cheers

So no different than this topic was 10+ years ago. Check your local Honda dealer out if you aren't interested in doing the work yourself. I saved $1000 when I did mine many years ago compared to my local Acura dealer.

I don’t think that seems high considering todays rates. My local independent shop has a 139 an hour labor rate. The dealers charge more then that. The timing belt/water pump job is about 4-5 hours book time. The valve adjustment requires them to remove the valve covers which is like 2-3 hours book time (if I remember correctly) and they should be replacing the gaskets if they haven’t already included that in your quote. If you do plugs there should be some crossover labor in there.

I thought the cam and crank seals came with the Aisin kits? Maybe I’m wrong on that. Every shop has its own policies with bringing your own parts. A lot of times they’ll do it, but won’t warranty the work. If you’re doing it at a Honda dealer, parts will cost more since they don’t do it as a kit. Each piece would be separate.

FWIW, with your addition of the sparkplugs (use NGK OEM plugs), all I do on the TB/water pump change is in bold and underlined are all the services I've done on Honda/Acura J-series motors. Unless there's a valve-tick noise I skip the valve timing adjustment since I've yet to see a J-series need a valve adjustment even after 200k-300k miles. I also don't change the pulleys and tensioners unless there is feelable wear on the pulley sealed bearings or the tensioner is leaking fluid. We had a 2003 Pilot with 325k miles still on the original pulleys, tensioner and front engine oil seals (crank and cams).

As stated in this thread use the Rock Auto Aisin kit or Acura/Honda OEM parts from a dealer. Honda's OEM components especially their seals are amazing.
