I have 2 rock chips on the windshield of my RDX. 1 is very small, I would say it's like 1mm, a very small dot and the other one is a little bigger but still fairly small, It's about 4mm. I took it to a local windshield repair shop with 20+ years of experience. I have seen rock chip repairs on YouTube and instagram and after the repair the rock chip usually is almost not visible. But in my case, after the repair was done to it, you can see the rock chip is even more visible than when it wasn't repaired. Now you can clearly see the resin and it's kinda annoying that after the repair it seems like it made it worse. I was thinking about just getting the whole windshield replaced with a new one but I read that there are sensors on the windshield that will need to be re-calibrated? Is this something that needs to be done at Acura or can a windshield repair shop do the calibration on it? See attached pictures of the repaired rock chips (1st pic is the small one, 2nd picture is the bigger one). Excuse the dirty windshield, it rained this morning.
The repair isn't supposed to reduce the visibility of the crack, just to keep it from spreading. I normally never get chips repaired. I let it be and if it grows then I get the windshield replaced.
Are you going to use insurance? If so, you might as well go to the dealer to get it replaced. I have a lower deductible on glass ($100) specifically so I don't have to worry about this. It doesn't add much to the premium.
"The cost of a windshield replacement for your Acura RDX can vary depending on several factors, including the type of glass required, additional features like rain sensors or heating elements and the recalibration your Acura RDX needs. We assess your vehicle's damage and provide the best price..."
Yes, there are various sensors are mounted against the windshield, behind the rear view mirror. These components make up the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). LINK
They do need to be recalibrated after a windshield repair, but any shop that replaces windshields will have the required equipment and knowledge to perform the work. The cost of calibration should be included in the cost estimate. In fact, it is likely that if you ask the dealer to replace the windshield, they will take it to a local auto glass shop.
In addition, if you have a HUD, then that windshield is different than the non-HUD version, and it will cost additional amounts.
I have seen cars with HUD's get aftermarket windshield replacements, resulting in blurry displays. So when I needed my windshield replaced I told the glass company that I wanted an OEM windshield, and I would pay the extra above whatever the insurance company offered. My insurance company agreed to pay for the OEM windshield with no questions asked. I assume that they were aware that installing aftermarket glass often results in many problems and complaints.
If you don't have a HUD, and aftermarket windshield will not likely present any problems.

The bolded.. Yes, I should have just left it alone. It wasn't even that noticeable but since I just bought the car recently, I wanted everything to look good/new. But now I feel like I just made it worse by having it repaired. Lesson learned. Yes, I was actually looking at Safelite and was thinking about using them but I didn't know if they could do the calibration on the sensors. I kinda wanna avoid taking it to the dealer because I have read that the dealer will charge more for a windshield replacement.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a HUD? I have a 2021 RDX A-spec (US version).

So, I just filled up a quote from Safelite and the total came out to $260, windshield replaced, recalibrated, new wiper blades. This seems very low? When I did a search online, some of the post I saw was saying it's around $700-1000?
Edit: nevermind, that was $260 in 4 payments, so the total came out to $1,047.
When I had the rock chips repaired, I went through my insurance (Geico). Do you think Geico is going to deny my claim for a new windshield since I just had the rock chip repair last month? Like will they question it or say it doesn't justify a new windshield just because I dont like the rock chip repair job? Because technically, my windshield is not damaged, I just don't like looking at the rock chip repair that made it worse.

Hard to say for sure. The worst they can say is no so I would give it a try. Tell them you are not happy with the way the repair was done and you’d prefer to have it replaced.
Is it in your field of view or to the side? If it’s off to the side maybe you will get used to it—see if it’s still bothering you after a week or two.
so I've had 2 windshields put in ours, Wife drives a lot of Highway driving and cracks happen. Also had a chip filled once too, think that was $20 outside of insurance.
The 2 replacements, we have Erie Insurance, were covered free to us, IIRC using aftermarket glass the invoice was like $800 or so maybe.
Just try to submit your claim, it should be easy, each time I've done ours I just used the Erie app and I think I had to upload a pic but it was all automated and I guess Safelite has the say but I feel like this is such easy $$$$ they would just replace it without batting an eye.

see attached picture. you see how on this rock chip, after it was repaired you could barely see the rock chip anymore. I thought I was going to get the same outcome which is why I went and got it repaired but on my rock chip, it is even more visible now. I wonder if the tech that worked on the rock chip on my windshield uses a different method than the one pictured? the rock chip I posted here is very similar to the rock chip on my windshield.
Never had a repair so I can't say. There is probably skill involved in doing a good job. I've had handymen completely botch a simple recaulking around a sink/bathtub that I then had to call someone else to get redone.

that epoxy is awful to deal with !

going through Insurance which uses Safelite they wouldn’t do OEM glass and I was worried however you’d never tell the difference and neither does the calibration for the camera and all either. It’s perfectly fine.

Safelite would not use OEM glass even if you paid extra for it? That's strange. I know that sometimes after market glass is identical to OEM and you can't tell the difference. But I have some experiences in my family when Safelite installed aftermarket glass and it had a noticable visual distortion. Its rolling a dice IMHO.

how was your experience with Safelite? I was planning on using them but after reading some bad reviews, I'm not too sure now. I guess it just depends on the location. plus Safelite says after the installation, I'll need to take my car to Acura to get the sensors recalibrated. I am looking around and a few windshield repair shops say they can do the install plus the calibration.

it was great both times so far!
that’s odd as the shop we went to did the calibration and all for us. Maybe see what other options you have

Did you have any issues with the 2 windshield replacement you had done on your car? I just found a local glass shop that can do the replacement plus re-calibrate the sensors. Price for this is $500, which is not bad. But it will be after market brand and not OEM. The 3 brands the shop gave me is Pilkington, AGC, and PGW. Did all your sensors work correctly after getting the new windshield? And did you have any issues with distortion visibility of the new windshield? Im just reading some reviews online from other folks who had their windshield replaced with an after market one, and some of the problems was that the lane assist sensor didn't work correctly and one said that the visibility of the new windshield was not clear and had blurry spot. Although these reviews were not from RDX owners. Maybe I am just over thinking about this?

overall I was a bit shocked with how happy I was with everything, especially given it cost nothing out of pocket for us.
i can’t recall what brand glass it is, I’ll try to pop out in the garage and look.
no issues at all, I feel like those people who had camera issues probably didn’t have their stuff re-calibrated .
we have Erie insurance and they cover windshields, if your insurance does , go with them and get it done for cheaper/free
