Tailgate Opening On It's Own ?
Tailgate Opening On It's Own ?
Three times I have found my tailgate opened as far as it could be while pinned up against my closed garage door. On a few of those occasions I did nor realize it until after I pushed the button to raise the garage door. The inside garage door handle has damaged the paint on the tailgate. It seems as though the gate may be opening on it's own??? I have never found it open anywhere except in the garage. Any thoughts?

You can also try changing a setting in the car to require that the doors are unlocked before allowing the tailgate to open, then always lock the car when its in the garage. It should help prevent accidental opening by requiring the door unlock button to be pressed first and within so many seconds (before auto re-lock) of the tailgate button being pressed. Find it here: Settings -> Vehicle -> Power Tailgate Setup -> Power Tailgate Keyless Open Mode -> When Unlocked
I remember seeing in this forum somewhere a couple people mentioning they thought the tailgate opened a few inches on its own, so it's not impossible that its another software bug and not just accidental button presses. Maybe back into the garage for a while to avoid more damage until you figure it out

Do you have the hands-free tailgate feature on your RDX?

If you open the tailgate intentionally and it reverses when it hits an obstruction, then I'd say the car is possessed (defective) and needs an exorcist (Honda technician). However, be prepared for some frustration when the dealer is "unable to duplicate the problem". Good luck!
Yeah, I'm going with demonic possession. IIRC there have been other reports of tailgates failing to reverse when meeting an obstruction ( head, torso ). Good thing they didn't give it a more powerful motor.

During and once after the D.1.0.7 audio system software update, my RDX's tailgate opened about 3 inches and stopped. The second time I had to manually close it because it wouldn't respond any other way.

I’m resurrecting an older thread because this is now happening to me. Over the weekend, I closed (with the button) the hatch on my 2020 rdx tech. The hatch closed completely, and there was nothing near the hatch. When I started the car and put it in reverse, I got an error message stating the hatch was open. I opened and closed it and all was well.
Fast forward to this morning. I looked out of my garage window and saw that the hatch was open! I know it was closed when I parked it last night. I do the same routine when I get home. Close the hatch completely (if I used it) and touch the rear door lock to lock it. I know I did this because it is routine and there are petty crimes of opportunity in the area, so I would never leave the car unlocked let alone with the hatch open.
Is anyone else experiencing this? A post said there is a setting where the hatch won’t open if the vehicle is locked. Can someone point me to that setting?
Thanks!

I can’t help thinking the “hatch open” warning and this might be related.
Thanks. I thought about this, but my key is always the only thing I have in my pocket and I hang the keys on a hook when I enter my house. I can’t believe the fob would be so sensitive it would open the hatch just by the fob being in my pocket.

If you want to discard the issue, change the settings to open liftgate only when vehicle is unlocked.
This happened to me, but never knew if the issue was the remote pressing onto something, after changing the setting, it never happened again.
Well, having seen these posts and relegating the issue to 'other peoples RDX's'....yesterday found my hatch open against the garage door, with, finally, my first chip in the paint. I don't believe the FOB was touched, and even if it was, you have push and hold that hatch button to get it to open. I have made the change in the settings as outlined above and hoping for the best. My wife saw the hatch open when we walked into the garage, and it would have been very easy for me to have hit the garage door open button and really damaged the hatch. I hope the setting thing resolves this issue, but the question is....does the RDX have a hatch issue?
