Why NOT to remove lowered springs?!?!?!

I posted a couple of weeks ago that i got into a car accident....i thought that was bad, now it's even worse. Becuase of my accident, my dad thinks that it was due to my H&R Sport Springs. That my car is too low, i can't see other cars (ohhh please, there are other stock cars that are lower than mine). My stubborn and hot headed dad thinks every thing he says/assume is right (couldn't be any farther from the truth). So he is making me remove me lowered springs after my car is back from the body shop. What should i do or tell an old stubborn man so that he will let me keep the lowered springs on my car?

i don't recall the thread, but was it your fault? if not, your dad has no reason to assume it was the springs.

and if it was your fault, what happened? find something positive (without getting yourself into more trouble ) about the accident such that the springs cannot be blamed.

i also do not know your family's relationship to the car, so your dad can do whatever he wants if he owns the car. if it's yours, leave them in.

good luck!

I remember your post, and it sounds like the other guy just was not really paying attention, and being timid (I HATE timid drivers), and you assumed he wouldn't go, so you pulled out, right?
Anyway, my argument would be that the springs help your car handle better, and may infact help prevent an accident by allowing you to avoid it. It's worth a try. I just got H&R Sports on mine, and am not sure why it too me so damn long!

I am assuming that you are a teenager and your parents bought (or helped to buy) the car (otherwise why would your dad have any say at all what you do with your car)?

He is probably upset about the accident and is looking for something concrete to change, just to make it feel like he has done something. Believe it or not, a lot of it is probably because he is worried about you getting hurt in future accidents. Also, he is probably worried about other things, like how much his insurance is going to skyrocket with an accident on your record.

I can understand why you wouldn't want to remove a mod, and all of us here know that it probably wasn't the cause of the accident, but I think you just need to try and reason with your dad and maybe the two of you can come to an understanding.

What bothers me about your post is the amount of disrepect you have expressed against your father. I hope you realize how lucky you are to have such a nice car at such a young age. As for the rest, I'm sure there's nothing I can say, because I've was a teenager once, and we all know that teenagers know everything and their parents (heck, all adults) know nothing. That's why we have teenagers running the country and all of the Fortune 500 companies, because they have so much knowledge of the real world and how it works.

Is your dad Korean? I know my dad got pissed as fvck when he "heard" I got the CAI. I let him use my car and he came back with a angered look."What's that hissing sound?" He opened the hood and was pissed to see this beautiful shiny pipe that makes my car perform so well. Luckly he hasn't heard my exhaust and I sold them on time. It's my car and it's my payments, yet Korean parents seems to jump all over anything and be mad. That's why I ask if your dad is Korean...

Man, what is up here on the TL board? We got parents taking away (or wanting to) cars, CAIs, lowered springs from some of our fellow members here; is there some sort of family/TL-S crisis going on around here?

I don't know what's going on, but it's gotten worse with age. When I was 16, I modded my ITR like crazy, but now with the TL-S...No way! Maybe because of the Fast and the Furious or something....... Or the moon is in a diferent position now...

Hey Evo - all is not quiet on the 38th parallel at your place? Don't give my address to your Dad - all I need is one of those mad Korean dads coming after me - I already have enough to worry about about some bin Ladenite or an antrax nut....

AcuraTLFan: Let your day stew for a while, and tell him that this auto expert on the forum was talking about "passive safety". Passive safety is having a car that allows one to avoid accidents by agility, as opposed to surviving them via airbags, etc.

Springs enhance handling, reduce spins, and allow a competent driver (i.e. YOU) to take measures to avoid dangerous drivers and unplanned incidents, whether you were at fault or not. Braking distance is also reduced since the balance of the car is maintained. A lower car gets better gas mileage since it is lower in the wind. etc. etc.

Hey man, he might just listen!

Psy ops...

Just a wild suggestion:

Listen to your dad as if you've learned your lesson and you’ve been thinking about what he has been saying…. Tell him you would like to know more about safety issues.

Try and look demoralized about not being able to use the money spent replacing the springs, and tell him you were thinking of buying some "safety gear" -- helmet, defensive driving manuals, etc.

Perhaps, but keep in mind that unless you correct it otherwise, you will lose some suspension travel. A stiff suspension may not save your car if you bottom out by hitting a pothole or speed bump because you lost the suspension travel that would have otherwise saved your car from getting its underside pounded, scraped, or worse. A properly tuned suspension will enhance handling; lowered springs by themselves are only highly effective on smooth surfaces.

Ever see lowered vehicles that look like they're being driven over railroad ties? I've seen more than a few lowered vehicles that exhibit this symptom; quite frankly, I can't see anyone saying that these kinds of vehicles actually handle better than they do at stock vehicle height. Heck, I'd be embarassed to be driving a vehicle that bounced like that, no matter how cool it looks just because it's practically touching the ground.

tdoh: What you say is true on an absolute basis, but the context here is Orange Cty and H&R sport springs, not some riced up rail job done by cutting; and bobbing all over the place as a result.

Would you agree that at least 51% of the time, this setup will enhance handling?

hey, AcuraTLFan, if your dad bought or helped you buy your TL, then you're pretty much at his mercy......I should know because my dad bought both of my TL's. It kinda sucks, but I couldn't afford a car this nice until after I graduate from university. Good luck w/ your car.

How about 50.0000000001% of the time?

My point was that there are trade-offs with just about any mod you put on a car; lowered springs are no exception to this.

So, having totally digressed from the original topic of this thread--I don't know the entire story but if it's his own car (bought with his own blood, sweat and tears) he should tell his dad in a nice way that he (AcuraTLFan) should ultimately decide what should be done; otherwise, he should give in since it's not his car.

Simple solution to these "my dad doesn't agree with me" issues--just move out and live on your own. As long as your parents are offering you some support that you don't have to fully reimburse them (monetary or othewise) for, you have to follow the house rules, so to speak. Quite frankly, many teenagers (or even young adults) view living with their parents under their roof as if it were "three hots and a cot," doing as they please otherwise. Freeloading may be too harsh a word here...bottom line--you wanna be your own boss and take control of your life, be a man and make a life for yourself, by yourself (or with a mate).

I was gonna say that it would be different if you had totally open-minded parents but since it appears that AcuraTLFan's dad doesn't appear to fall under this category, I'll say nothing more about it.

Just listen to your dad and agree. I did the same for my CAI and threatened to sell, but my dad said "it's okay, just keep it. It's not that loud...I just don't want this nice car to be like those other cars(ricerS!).

THanks for all the support and laughs, i could always count on you guys to cheer me up =). The accident was at UCI, on Campus and Bridge, in Irvine. In a college student. Insurcance is gonna be a bit*h! My parents are just putting the money out to by the car first. I have one more year of college to go and the plan is too pay them back when i get a career. I would pay them for the car and the cost of insurance within two years of graduation (Computer/Electrical Engineer). So basically it's their car for another 3 years. But after i paid it off, i still think my dad will get pissed if i put the springs back on...that's because i'm still living under his roof. I'm Vietnamese, and if you know anything about Vietnamese parents, they are STRICT. I don't mean to be disrectful, i was just fustrated that there isn't a logcal reason that he can come up with for making me take off the springs except, "I tell you too, so just do it"

My first car was a mildly riced out Integra, and I ended up totaling it. I got side swiped at 70 and did a few revolutions before smashing into the center divider. I swear to this day, that if my car wasn't lowered, then I would have been upside down and possibly ended up in the hospital. Just my take on it.
