Hmmm that's weird. It will still be good once you finish all that work

I wish the machines at work were small enough to do side jobs but unfornately for me my machine is huge as fuck and all my hardware is huge so can't even secure a small job if I wanted to. Maybe after my shift I could go up to the tool room but even then I'd have no fixtures. Just have to open my own shop I guess.

I'm looking for the fucker right now. I got my lowers I'm working on that I just got. They had a crack that was only repaired outside so I ground it out some now I'm gonna have him fill in the crack then I'll get it looking like brand new. These older guys here wander off and can be hard to find sometimes lol.

Here's what I got going on here. I bought these runners and from what I've been told they were ported and polished by Paul (NVA-AV6 is his name I think) the outside of the crack was welded pretty nicely but nothing inside. Though he said they don't leak, I'm not taking any chances. Here's some pics:

Here's how they came:

I ground out that weld booger and dug into the crack to make room to be filled w weld:

The polish on these is pretty good but they could use more porting. I'm gonna start on the one not cracked while I wait on my welder and just go up to the line I see from the gasket. Then I plan to hone both mating surfaces and throw them puppies on.

Are you opening up the whole runners to the gasket size or just the start of them??

i just do it. i dont worry about if i can do it or not, i go into it like i have done it before and just do it. Just dont be afraid to try. Its not like i had experience putting A4 headlights in before, or like i have ever rebuilt a motor before my first time i ever rebuilt one. You have to start somewhere. Plus with the advent of the internet you can literally find anything in minutes if you need help.

If they are welded up on the outside they should be good. How did they get cracked? My tig welder is broke but i can aluminum rod braze them. Bring them up.

The whole thing is getting opened up. I have found the heads have the most to gain from this. There is a lot of material to remove which should allow for some serious flow and good gains.

I got a guy a work says he can fit his TIG torch in there and fill it in for me. Ima go get it back tomorrow hopefully. Then I'll grind and polish it back to nice again. I can see the old gasket marks so I'm gonna open them up to that size then maybe I'll attempt the heads on a weekend off. Did u just stuff mad rags inside the heads to keep them free of chips? Hopefully this goes well. I've read not to polish to too fine of a finish or it will interfere w atomization of the fuel due to lack of turbulence in the air. True or false?

My heads are off and sitting on my work bench with the valves and everything out of them. Im not sure i would do it with the heads attached. You wont have enough room to maneuver i in there to do it properly on the vehicle. Plus with them off you can open the exhaust side as well.

As for smooth or not smooth, the jury seems to be split on that. Personally i dont think it matters on modern fuel injection setups like ours as the fuel injector sits just before the head and there is no need for turbulence up in the intake or runners to mix the fuel Maybe back in the carburetor days where it dumped the fuel in before the intake.

Both. Ive got all sorts of stones (i find the ball shape to work best once you get in further). Im also using port and polish kits like these

You can get a good set of these at Harbor freight for like 20 bucks

And when every thing is said and done ill use a set of these

Did a little work to the heads today. There is a pretty good lip where the valve seat meets the head that i was able to smooth out, and some pretty decent casting marks that need to come out. I wont go much smoother on the intake ports here to allow a little turbulence to help atomize the fuel. Ill just clean things up a little. When i get to the exhaust and combustion chamber side ill polish those. Ill also take a little lapping compound and clean up the valve seats and valves.

I don't have your skills w these motors plus I work most every weekend. 12 hour days this weekend too. Plus I can't occupy the garage overnight because they'll break in the van if left out so any extended job I gotta do outside and right now the weather won't allow that.

Does this prevent piston/valve interference in the event of timing belt failure??

No, The J Series is an open deck design motor. These take the open deck design of the J and close them (the space around the cyl walls). It gets put in to stiffen the cyl walls from "walk" slight movement which distorts the cyl.

Open deck

With block guard in place

Making a very reliable motor even more reliable = winning. Dumb question, but how's that held in place? I don't see any weld.

(thats not mine, its just a pic to show where it goes) It can be held in place with red loctite or a few tac welds. Its not a loose fit, its very tight.

Started porting, smoothing things out and gasket matching on the Exhaust side of the head. There is a TON of material here to open and match. Now ill have to see what can be done to the headers or see if ill have to build new ones. This thing should really flow now.

Gasket matched

I want these headers. (yes those are on a J series)

Looks like its coming along nicely, I think with the motor set up your going for you will need to do a custom set of headers. It will help make more power and wont be as restrictive as the basic aftermarket headers.

I gotta take some time and practice my welding. Been machining so long that now I just grab a guy from the shop to weld for me. We are paid by the hour so they don't really mind, lol !
