motor oil

I'm in Canada, my car is 03 tl-s. I'm trying to change motor oil by myself. The manual says to use 5w-20 only, i'll use castrol, but which kind of motor oil i should use(or better), GTX,or SYNTEC, or SYNTEC BLEND?

If using syn most prefer Mobil 1 or amsoil. You dont have to use "Only" 5w20 (honda went to that weight for cafe standards) 5w30 will work just fine in the car.

Castrol is not that good as amsoil? I know Mobil 1 is the best...

What kind of oil, be it regular synthetic or blend is really up to you. Some people swear by synthetic while others are totally happy with regular. Doing a seach on the net about the differneces would help you make a decission. BTW what filter are you planning on using?

Just go with Mobil1 synthetic. Amsoil typically has to be bought from a reseller so it's not typically something you'll be able to pick up at the local auto parts store.

Purolator has a good filter as well as a few others (I'm using a K&N). Just don't get a Fram, those things are real garbage. Hell of an advetising campaign though.

Just put on a Fram Tough Guard + Mobil1 5W20 for the winter ... (first time with synthetic and odometer at 114,000km) But in the spring, it'll be oversized Mobil1 filter + Mobil1 sythetic ...

I've been using Mobil 1 5W-30 and M1 oil filter since the first oil change. works great!
Amsoil and Mobil 1 are the best oil products on the market.
I would not get synthetic blend, people say its a scam.... either go with regular oil, or fully synthetic.

I used Castrol (DINO) on both of my previous Honda Cars-both were 4 bangers. They had over 300,000 miles on em when I sold both of them. They ran many many more miles. Local High Shool kid bought my Accord and it's still running with 325,000. Engine never touched internally. SO=Castrol must be ok eh????????

I had used Fram in my MR2 SC for a year then decided to try the Toyota filter, what a difference!
the OEM filter keeps the oil clean way longer than the Fram...

I would suspect that Honda's filters are as good?

Honda/Acura Garage now wants over $8.00 for a filter. I change my own oil to save a few bucks. Thus the aftermarket filters for 3/4$ a each.

How could you tell that the filter was doing a better job. By the color of the oil?. Color of the oil doesnt mean its dirty or bad. (infact if it wasnt getting dark after 1k of driving id be worried that it wasnt doing its job)

Hondas filters used to be fram.

I agree with Kris, you have to do an used oil analysis and get a particle count comparing filter a to filter b, you can't trust the color of used oil. If one does not want to spend $ and just want a visual check, he can cut open used oil filter and take a look at the amount of dirt on the filter media.
I use Amsoil 5w-20 and K&N filter (for better oil flow). Honda filter is $8 now? I got K&N performance gold shipped to my door for less than that.

If you go with Mobil 1 oil, I suggest you get Mobil 1 oil filter as well.
Model number is M104, and its about $11.
And you need to buy 5qt of oil. I typically go to Walmart and buy one 5qt bottle for around $22. this seems to be the cheapest way to go.
but filters you need to buy in Autozone or PepBoys..

The over priced mobil 1 filter isnt needed. Any filter thats for the TL is fine. If you plan on running extended intervals (any thing over the 3k waste that every one recomends) look for the extended performance type filters.

The guy in the autoshop told me that i need about 5.5bottles of the oil. (10w-30..for cars with over 75,000 miles)

the guy from the garage i went to said 4.25 bottles is enough...so thats what he put

i drove back to my friends place..and restarted the car.(if it matters...his driveway is at a slant..where the front end was higher)

what scared me is that the engine started shaking violently, TCS light started to blink and then the engine stopped. i quickly pour another 1.25-1.50 quarts of oil in and the car and started her up again..and everything was back to normal.

has anybody experienced this before?

Mobil 1 oil filter is pretty good based on filter reviews I found on the web.
The latest M1 oil filter is redesigned specifically for Extended Performance and longer drain intervals. Sure M1 filter is expensive, but its still cheaper than Amsoil filter.
In my opinion if you have the money for synthetic oil, you might as well put top of the line oil filter, and M1 oil filter is defiantly among the best.

Here is info from mobil1.com:
oil filter

This filter is redesigned, it now comes in black color. Now advertisements say its designed for longer drain intervals because it has bigger capacity for contaminants.

Yea and i have a motor with 200k on it that has used nothng but fram filters and 8-15k oil change intervals. Ive had oil and filters tested/inspected before. and every thing was fine. To me the over priced filters wernt worth it.

Its 4.7

And the full 5 quarts (Mobil one comes in the 5 qt jug) will work just fine. Been doing it for over 200k in the TL with out issue

I put over 380,000 miles on a Honda Prelude and I always used non-synthetic oil at the factory recommended interval of 7,500 miles.

And I used Fram filters 90% of the time with a handful of Honda brand filters thrown into the mix. I never had a problem and that car is still running great.

I'll probably follow the same path with my 1999 TL.

Are you using regular fram filters? Because top of the line fram will be in the same price rage as Mobil1 oil filter.
