Replace Nav system with Android Tablet

Hi all, I'm new to this forum so I hope I'm not repeating a thread. I'm looking into replacing my Stock Nav screen in my 06 RL with a 7 inch android tablet. I saw a thread that used a tablet and just fed the video to the aux input but want to actually replace the screen and use the touch capability. My only concern is loosing stock functionality. Several systems feed the nav screen such as the radio and air conditioner.

My plan is to maybe build some kind of arduino board that interfaces via Bluetooth to feed the ac and radio data to the tablet and display using an app.

My question is, does anyone know where I can get the interface document so I can build the app to interpret the data? Or documentation on the signals?

I have the wiring diagrams but this whole thing would be a lot easier if the Display Module just fed the screen via RGB or VGA.

Can you provide a link to that thread. The only other thread I saw was streaming the video from the tablet to the OEM screen via the AUX.

3G TL, 18 posts... $10 says he never comes back with a link.

There was a Russian company that has some pretty cool features integrated into the stock equipment. IIRC, it was brought up here via YouTube and the originators eventually made it to the thread. https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-rl-audio-bluetooth-electronics-navigation-90/what-car-pc-touch-screen-knob-control-859150/

Your task seems daunting, but anything is possible with enough time and money. I wish you luck because I think it would be cool, but I think you are going to find it nearly impossible to get the protocol instructions for the video feeds. If you do, I would be willing to bet another $10 it's in Japanese.

^yes, the in the 3G TL forums we have successfully retrofitted several different tablets into the car.

they were all 7 inch tabs.

I did find an intersting thread where a guy.installed a carputer that sniffed the IEBus for the control data. It might be easier to see if I could just break
out the rgb signals to the screen and just feed that to the tablet. I'm going to keep looking into it. Does anyone know where to get a signal diagram of the display unit itself?

It would be faster and cheaper to build the car around the tablet than to put the tablet into a car. Besides, if you succeed then you will have a touch screen that you cannot reach and will only work until the pad gets its next upgrade.

actually; the pads get updated frequently and are more powerful than the RL's touch screen/nav...
the RL's nav is waaay behind, as its technology is from 2003.

I do agree about placement, as the RL's screen is up high, as where the TL's nav screen is in direct line of touch

To control the RL with the diagnostics, audio, climate control, calendar etc would take a lot of code writing in the unlikely event that you could reverse engineer the code that is on the DVD, the NVRAM, the PROMS and the embedded content of the incorporated processors.

Again, touch screens are terrible in a car. It is quite frequent to hit the wrong key on most pads yet alone a touch screen at arms length while going over bumps. I like my IPad but typing on it when in a car is hopeless. I had a touch screen in a Pilot (same as the crap system in the older TL's) and I could not wait to get rid of it.

Someone has already started to reverse engineer and it wouldn't be all that hard, just time consuming. I'm now thinking about relocating the Display Unit a little farther back so the tablet would sit in front. If, I can break out the RGB video to the LCD screen then I would just build a small device that would connect to the tablet using AOA and convert the RGB signal to a digital signal and send it to the tablet. It should be relatively easy to build an android program to display the video. That way all the normal controls would still work.

This would be pretty interesting. As it stands right now I'm mirroring my Galaxy s4 onto the navi screen. Works pretty well aside from the fact that I have to control everything on the phone. Google maps looks awesome on the screen

Any updates on this? I would like to contribute to any open source project that requires some code. The Nav on my RL went out, and I don't care to replace it with another DVD player. As long as the AC works, I'm good

op how much do you know about Arduino?
I installed the indash in mine but I don't know anything about Arduino or canbus interface (honda calls it GA-net or GA-net2 or GA-net+ depending on year)

I also found someone who can possibly modify the stock amp to accept regular remote turn on
or help us with figuring out the circuitry

Chinese people do it and I tried to contact them through Alibaba but they don't really understand what im asking them

maybe you can also contact the people who make android radios for accord and TSX because they are very similar. and have built in climate controls on them already
