What is this?!!? car pc with touch screen and knob control

Whoa, this guy has a touch screen in his RL and is controlling the mouse with the knob in the RL. Anybody know how this is done? I always wanted to have a PC in the car. Would love to have a micro PC with tons of movies and music on it. Not to mention news, weather, and a bunch more via wifi from your cell phone! I just might have to get a navtool, but how do you get the RL knob to work as a mouse?

This guy is obviously a nerd with a lot of time and experience. Turning the knob into a mouse is likely very easy with a microcontroller. Installing a touch screen and PC ECU/hard drive are likely relatively easy. Integrating all of this into the features of the RL seems rather daunting. I would bet $$$ he has replaced all screen features with his own.

Pretty freaking cool though. Good find!

7spys right, turning the knob into the mouse would just be a matter of removing that piece and doing a little bit of reverse engineering to figure out how it works, then it would just be a matter of hooking it up to a micro-controller, programming it to take that information and send it to a PC, etc etc, something that could be done easily with an arduino or the like.

Touchscreen overlay's are pretty easy to come by so he is probably using the stock screen with a navtool like device with the touch screen overlay ran to the CarPC and calibrated for the stock screen.

Hmmm I guess I was partly right...I just found this on his youtube page..he is using the stock screen.

Also here is a link to their site.......maybe I will cancel my navtool order and get this lol!

EDIT: Ah nvm screw it this thing looks like it runs 1k for the whole package and I mean who the hell needs this in their car anyway. I am probably hardly going to use the video functionality as it is and I mean I'm only 18 years old ....maybe I will do this in my next car in like 4 or 5 years

Wow actually I think I am going to contact them Monday and see if this is avaliable/how much it costs and then possibly cancel my NavTool order

Thats a thousand bucks only for the audio video adaptor. Put another grand for a good carpc + install. They can keep it.

Wow, $1000. Does that include the computer, too? May be worth that if it has everything. But I was thinking of getting a navtool anyway and a car pc. I could control it with a bluetooth remote control pointer tool. Been looking for something like that. But the navtool would have to take RGB or something, composite video would not look sharp. Actually, just having an android device would suffice. I have a Toshiba Thrive tablet on the way with an HDMI out. If that could be converted and some control mechanism could be done via remote blutooth, that would be better. I always thought that a full PC was a waste in a car and too cumbersome, while Android or iOs would be ideal. If it could be stashed in the trunk and controlled remotely with a single hand held pointer device. I know you can do it with a PC, but how about android? I guess I can find out when I get mine.

I am looking at the navtool now, but it's composite only. Ewww! Then it feeds RGB out to the monitor. Do they make an RGB version?

According to our estimates, it is the total cost of the project CarPC, where the cost of the controller GA-Net+ is only 25%

You guys should really post on here if you do work on cars like this I definitely would have done this over what I have now but hey I have $400 vested in what I currently have so maybe on my next car lol.

No need to PM unless you're talking personal price quotes. We're all interested in the possibilities. I always wanted a carpc (or android preferably), but I find the nav tool with only a composite input while our monitors work in sharp RGB to be a joke. And the control via the knob is the really big deal!

The monitor is stock and from the looks of it has a pretty good resolution. If NavTool doesn't ship my order out tomorrow I am likely canceling and buying the GA-Net unit. Also it looks like the audio part taps into the FM antenna so I could keep my USA Spec adapter installed, possibly I could keep the NavTool too.

It sounds more interesting like this. I misunderstood the price break down on your website.
Like 007 said, it would be nice to know more about the features. I think you have a good pool of potential customers here.

Yeah seriously if you would have posted this like last year or a couple years ago probably could have sold alot of these units.

Here is what he PM'ed me. I didn't click it, so I can't verify if it is a bogus link (virus) or not. Looks fishy.

Its legit, these guys are in Russia....we now know the resolution of our navigation screens though. 800x480 and I would say that is pretty damn good for 2005.

I attached the file they sent

They should use the external CD changer port instead of taping on the RF for audio.

Yea I've been slacking. i actually need to find my orange corners so I can make a mold. Not entirely sure where I placed them

Yes removing the orange peice and replacing them with an identical clear peice. I made some for my 8th gen Accord. I need to find a better clear resin that won't yellow over time also cause the Cast N Craft I was using yellows after a few months.

I think some people (me included) may be scared or apprehensive to send that much money to Russia. I'm sure if someone actually pulled the trigger from this side of the globe, you'd see many more people purchasing.

Anyone knows how they would actually input stuff on the computer? I mean if you are using a windows interface, you should use a keyboard no? Or would it be unnecessary?
