S4 burns excessive oil??

yeah, i know this is a cl forum, but i've seen a number of S4 guys on here (not so much recently). so i'm posting this in ramblings hoping not to get slammed to much. i'm asking this question for my mom. she has a 2002 auto S4, and she just told me about the burning oil issue. i'll be watching her house this week, and she said that if i'm driving her car and the red oil light comes on, i have to pull over, turn off the car, and add more oil or something. she said that the dealer told her about this before she even drove it off the lot. something about the twin turbo burns oil faster than usual.

can any of you guys give me some info on the truth behind this? is the dealer just giving her some line so they don't have to fix it? thanks for any help.

I could probably understand that it would, however I would still trade for it.

it does burn oil a bit quicker than the acura did but not excessively. i you are driving it and you finally get to your destination, let the turbos cool a bit, but most of all, have fun! you're better off with posting on www.audiworld.com

I have a 01 stick S4 and I have no problems with burning excess oil. Better take it to the dealer and have it checked out...

My wife's and some friends' previous gen. A4 also burn engine oil. We have to constantly monitor the oil level and add oil as needed. The oil level will be dangerously low by the time the oil warning light turns on.

Some turbos burn lots of oil, some worse than others. I spoke with a guy who has a 2002 911 turbo (daily driven) and he says he has to add a quart every week or so. Sucks having a nice car!

Usually the burning oil problem is only evident during the break in period (up to about 5,000 miles). I am not sure why. I would suggest however that you have her switch to synthetic oil. Most people opt for the Mobil 1, 0W30 weight. You can bring the oil with you for her scheduled maintenence and just tell them to use the oil your brought. The dealer does not put synthetic in unless you supply it.
