oil question...

What's up everyone...I bought my '01 CL-S two weeks ago today, and had a question about the oil. I checked it when I got home from the dealer, and it was full and very clean, so I'm sure the dealer changed it recently. Is there a way to find out if the car was running synthetic oil? And I just saw a post with someone saying these cars run 5w20. Is that right? My car just broke 74,000 miles so I'm trying to figure out a maintenance schedule, and the correct type of oil I should be running...
Thanks for any info you can give me...

You could always have the oil analyzed, but really it doesn't matter if it's synthetic or not. If you want to switch to synthetic go ahead, if the internals are in good shape you shouldn't have any problems with leaky seals switching from dino to synthetic.

I use Mobile 1 syn 5w20 and filter with change intervals every 7.5k to 10k miles. Any more frequent than that and you might as well use dino .

I didn't want to switch to synthetic if I didn't have to, but if I could go up to 10k without changing the oil, it should still be about equal in cost comparison to regular oil and more frequent changes then right? I was running Mobil1 in my last car but was changing it every 5k. I definately won't be running the cl-s as hard, so 10k per change is safe?

Couldn't have said it better myself.. Mobile 1 Synthetic at 7.5k intervals, any more frequent than that and you're throwing money away.

The only problem I have with 10k intervals is the filter itself, but I wouldn't be surprised if they are fine as well.

The filter was always my worry at 5k, but I guess I was wrong. 7500 miles is sounds do-able. I only drive 15 miles to work, and I pretty much just cruise. Guess that's not much more, especially if I'm babying it most of the time. So, going with Mobil1 with 74,000 on the odometer, what weight should I be using?

On a side note, I'm just starting to read up on this whole tranny issue. Being that I'm still under 100k, could I get the tranny replaced if need be, or is it only for original owners?

Mobile 1 extended performance filters are good for up to 15,000 miles. That's what I use. Acura actually suggests change intervals at 7.5K on dino, so 10K on synthetic should be no problem.

Thanks for your guys' help. I'll definately be popping in, trying to learn more about the car as I go. I'll post some pics and stuff when I start putting some money into her. It's all stock for now though.

That's what I use, too. Also in owner's manual and oil cap. I'm sure 5w20 is OK, too.

Are you sure it's a 5 qt jug? I bought a Mobile 1 jug that I thought was 5 qts and it turned out to be 4 qts.

It says 5qts on the jug, so it should be, unless mobil or walmart are pulling a fast one.
