Too late to switch to synthetic?

Just got my oil changed at the dealer with dino oil.
Was going to do synthetic but the dealership wanted $75 which is robbery.

Anyway, currently have 16k miles on an '06.
Was thinking maybe next oil change around 20k I would switch.

I see that most switch to synthetic in the 1st or 2nd oil change so I was just wondering.

I can't see what harm is done by switching later ... if you've done normal oil changes on a reasonable schedule. I switched to synth in my Jeep after 8-10 years, runs great.

I hope you didn't wait until 16K for your first oil change...! My pre-owned TSX has 35K on the odo, and I'll start putting synth in. I buy my own oil at the warehouse club store for savings, keep it in the garage, and provide it to the local station when I change. It usually ends up costing $16-20 for labor for a quick oil/filter/lube. At that price, I can afford to do it without stretching the miles between changes.

Oh no, I follow the maintenance reminder schedule. This time I was nearly 100 miles overdue, and blinking at me every time I drove the car.
It seems to follow a pretty strict schedule of an oil change every 5k miles.

Looks like first synthetic change @ 20k miles for me

Purchased a certified TSX last month with 10,500 miles. I will be switching to synthetic also, the only downside is more money, but in the long run it is worth it.

From what I understand, the only time you should not change your oil is during the 1st service interval (0-5,000 miles) because of the factory engine oil additives to help with the TSX break-in period. After that, you can change to the good stuff anytime you want.

I just switched at 10000 (2nd change). The only thing I've read is that you don't want to switch back and forth - if you change to synthetic, stick with it. Now someone will tell me that's just a myth...

I went with Royal Purple, and since I track my fuel economy very closely I'm curious to see if the claim is true. I should have my first tank under my belt some time next week. I'll post some data if it's interesting.

There's alot of myths about synthetics. Most of this stem from the early attempts. The formulas for synthetics has been improved in the last few years.

I think the only problem would be if your car had very high miles (dino oil can plug up holes that develop, and synthetics can clean away the dino oil which can open leaks). 16k isn't considered high miles

The typical Acura engine at 200,000 miles still has the OE crosshatch honing marks in the cylinders!
They arent even considered really broken in till 100k miles so you guys have no concerns at all
My 01 had been run 70k miles on dino changed every 5000- our reminder light comes on at 7500
I ran Seafoam (see gen 2 thread Seafoamed the Ol TL) thru the crankcase and switched to Penzoil Platinum Full Synthetic
The seafoam will clean all the oil passages and turn the old oil black in 10 minutes- thats good- the filter captures the bad stuff, then you switch to synth and go 7500 easy- most go 10,000 miles on it- with 1 filter change a 5 for good measure
I like the K&N or Mobil1 filters

The EPA changed rules on additives and some makers changed the base oil to cheaper stuff, so read carefully and look thru azinr oil ratings
Fully Synthetic are words to require!
