Removing gum from paint?

While on vacation in Ocean City Nj, I wake up outside to find a huge wad of gum under my passanger side door handle. I made the discovery around 1 pm after the scorching sun already took the liberty of helping to bake the gum onto the paint. I removed most of it but the sticky residue is still there. I was thinking about using goo-gone to remove the rest. Is this the right way to approach the problem?

A few alternatives to "goo gone" that might be a bit more gentle on the paint

1) Clay bar. Get claymagic at your local car parts store.
2) A good paint cleaner. For example, if you have a Harley Davison store in town, get S100 body cleaner. Its marketed for motorcycles but is really just a car product in a motorcycle can. My favorite is Klasse All-in-one, but you'd have to mail order that.
3) Stonier's Tarminator works fine on that kind of goo.
4) A cheap and easy solution to most sticky substances is Invisible Glass. Although it is class cleaner, I use it regularly to remove bugs and other road grime from my bumpers. Used with a microfiber cloth in a small section of your car it will get rid of some difficult messes without messing up the paint.

I have had a similar situation... While on vacation my daughter had a piece of gum which she told me she swallowed, only to find it stuck all to the side of my car a few hours later when we stopped. I swear by Simple Green found in the household isle almost anywhere, even some auto part stores carry this. Goo-Gone will work too though as some suggest. I would reccomend washing the area real good after using the goo gone though.

WD-40 will remove any sticky residue from metal. It also works great on road tar as well.
