Went to Acura for the free 47 point inspection, and asked them to fix my 04. The weather stripping between the rear window and trunk lid wore off and it is starting to rust (IN FLORIDA). Yes it is an 04! The stealership told me that it was due to the way they designed the trunk, that water sits there, and that it is not weather stripping just primer. It is not covered by my regular or extended warranty because the rust has to be on a body pannel. I asked him to explain it to me again in the show room where they are trying to sell 50K cars, and he refused. So rust on a garage kept 04 RL is not a factory defect.

So let me get this straight; they admit to you that it's a design flaw and then tell you that it won't be covered under the warranty. "It's our fault, but we're not going to fix it" is essentially what it comes down to.
To top it off, you have two Acuras--further, they are two of the most expensive models in the Acura line.
It's definitely time for a formal complaint, along with a switch of dealers. When will these Acura dealers learn that customer service is key? It's sad that customer service is a luxury...
I called acura customer service, the warranty agaisnt rust is up at 50,000 miles, and only is covered if the rust goes all the way through. Just wrote a letter to Takeo Fukui. the president, calling this refusal an embarassment to the company. Rust on a less than three year old Florida car, good luck getting my business in the future. Dealership, who did not sell me the car said that they would repair it if they could, but it is simply not covered. Time to visit Lexus for my next ride.
You know, it's funny that you mentioned about this. I have an 04M myself with 70K and it has a slight hint of rust. Actually, the black paint is starting to lift off from the chrome-looking part. I pulled it with my finger and it flaked off!
I know how much it's gonna cost me if I decide to replace it. At this time, I am just going to remove it and repaint it myself.

My dealer called it in to the regional manager, they called me a week ago that they approved the repair, the parts are in. I traded my 04 RL in about a month ago. Go figure...
I thought acura had a rust warranty for 5 years no matter what the mileage?
They do, however, it is for rust that comes up through the paint (rust bubbles). If you get a deep scratch on the door and eventually get rust in the scratch, that's not covered.

Do you still possibly have the 1996 Acura RL? I'm trying to find the part but can't seem to find it available anywhere.
@youngclover if you ever follow-up / return to this thread??
This is how incredibly easy it is to empower yourself in finding the part you seek.
1) Google search the part number 73251-SZ3-013.
2) Find a vendor that claims it is 'in-stock'.
3) Open up a 'Live Chat' session with said online vendor:
4) Inquire as to the parts availability:
5) Shout Eureka!!!, at the top of your lungs for successfully empowering yourself and (most importantly) employing critical thinking skills in potentially solving your car part dilemma!!!!!

Lots of pockets and places for leaves and other airborne debris to get stuck in my 'O2. I'm constantly pulling stuff out around the corners of the windows, but no rust. My paint just needs a good buff out!
