'97 cl cutting out while running

Hi guys, new to the forum. I have a '97 CL 2.2 Automatic with 102,000. Love the car and has been trouble free up until now. While driving the car will cut out, or hesitate if you will. The RPM neele goes down and then it will come back up. Continue to drive fine and then it will do it again. Sometimes the car will not start in the mornings. I will turn off the key switch and wait a few minutes and then it will start. Sometimes it takes more tries than just one.
I have trouble shot this problem. I know that when I try to start it and it does not, I have no spark. Once it starts, you can smell all the raw fuel for a few seconds. I have power going to the coil (12VDC on Blk/Ylw wire). Also, I know that when your RPM needle goes down fast the way it does, it's something to do with your ignition/coil. But when coils go bad they go bad, don't they? I mean, my problem is intermittent. Sometimes its fine and others it's just plain annoying. Can someone please help??
Thanks in advance!!

im having somewhat of the same problem. i thought it was alternator related, but i did a atlernator and battery test and it was fine.

sometimes when i hit a hard bump. my accesories shut off like radio, clock, needles go down on the gauges. i think my problem is a bad ground. but im not sure.

on mine, everything works just fine. no lights on the gauge cluster turn on. Just my RPM needle drops and comes back. When it cuts off it's only for a quarter of a second.

i had that problem, it was the spark plug igniter. it was pretty bad, i would drive and get to a red light or stop sign and it'd die, sometimes not even being able to start the car for a few intense minutes of sitting thru 4 red lights on a busy street....

is it more like when you accelerating and when it gets to a certin RPM the fuel feels like it shuts off or something. because thats what happend to me for like a week and autozone said the oil that i put in it was not for highmileage cars. i got another oil change and put fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank and now it runs fine.

Failure to start w/ confirmed no-spark and confirmed power to the coil, suggests either intermittent coil or ignitor. I could believe an intermittent coil, but ignitor is a solid state device and they are rarely intermittent. Check coil secondary resistance against specs for your car. Spec should be 14-22 kohms, but check your manual. I think coil is most likely. Hopefully, the resistance check will tell.

Following is a thread to an Accord forum diy section on how to distinguish between coil and ignitor. Let me know how it works.

All you other guys w/ problems should post your own thread. It gets too confusing trying to respond to multiple problems in same thread.

good luck

Hi guys. Thanks for all the input and comments. Sorry I did not get a chance to write sooner but I fixed the problem on Monday. It was the Ignitor. Car runs like a champ again. Thanks guys!
