California Car Duster
California Car Duster
Ok detailing gurus, I need y'alls help. My parents live out in the country off of a dusty road. Everytime I go out there, the Vette gets a nice top coating of dust. It is not dirty, just a nice little layer of dust on a clean car.
So, seeing as I have a black car, and do not want to scratch the nice finish, I need to know if it is ok to use the Duster to get off that fine layer of dust.
Gurus, what do you say? Is it safe to use?

I use it on my suburban. Make sure the car isn't too dirty. Also try to find one w/ a wooden handle, they are better.
When you first get it, you need to wrap it in newspaper for the first 2 weeks or so, change the paper every few days. These things are really oily. the older and more (dirtier) they get the better they work. I've been using the same one for about 7 years.
Also, a little QD and a microfiber cloth would be a good safe easy wash as well

It works, but I second the issue with the oily-ness. They impregnate the fibers in paraffin and I do see some streaks (of the wax) after I dust. Somtimes you have to wipe those streaks off with a MF cloth.
I actually store my duster on a newspaper to suck out the wax. Mine is about 3 years old now and still makes the paper oily.

The reason I ask is becuase I usually cover my car at night and during the day when at work. I don't want to be putting the cover on if the car is dusty for fear of scratching.
Also, you can use QD and a microbfiber to get off dust?? That doesn't scratch??

i use a large amount of QD, it may scratch a little, but I also always have a ton of protection on my cars and re-polish them every few months

well, QD is a specific quick detailer. I was just referring to QD's in general. I personaly use meguiars Last Touch, and buy it by the gallon (I think it's last touch, it's either that or final inspection
)

I used to have the California Car Duster a while ago when I had my Camry. After I got the CL-S I I started to use the equivalent product from Griot's Garage. The griot's brush doesn't have the problem of the oily residue, even when it was new - and I've been using it for almost 3 years now. I totally like it better than the california duster, which was promptly discarded.
I use it only if it's dusty, not dirty - and not after it rains unless the car's been sitting through the rain. In other words, if it rained, and I drove it, I won't dust it - I'll wash it. Otherwise you're spreading road grime around.
Use it only when the car is clean, but dusty and you should be ok. I usually use it before using a detailing spray in between washes (again, only if it's not rained).

odd, I never had the problem of oil sticking to my car like I did with the california duster... do you all have the one with the grey fibers? I never used their older one with the red ones.
Haha maybe I got a defective one.

I have a CD in the garage but I havent used it but once. I feel that Qd'ing the car with good quality MF's will have the ability to remove dust, renew that just waxed shine, increase surface slickness and add to the wax/sealants protection.

it is a Mequirs product and works well for taking bugs and crap off of a freshly washed car.
