Windows XP SP2

Anyone else installed this cr@p yet?

My internet explorer is going semi-haywire.

There is a conflict between my Norton Internet Securities and the Windows Securities.

What seems to happen is a page will begin loading and then stop. It doesn't freeze or lock up it just stops. The little green status bar goes full, it says "done" in the corner but only the first visible window will be there, can't scroll down. I can hit refresh and it will download the rest of the page (perhaps because the first page is cached(right use of word?)?)

Another example is the Playmate video and Skate Boarder video, posted in ramblings. It will load a few seconds of the clip and stop. Same info at the bottom as stated above, hit refresh and a little more will load.

I can turn off my norton firewall and everything works fine. But I trust the norton firewall 100x more than the new Windows Firewall.

Any of you computer gurus have a tip for me? And yes I have contacted Microsoft, they said turn off Norton. And I contacted Norton, they said download a patch which I cannot find on their site.

according to norton's site the patch is not available yet. you may want to uninstall SP2 and apply the patch first

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...src=ivr_na_con

Symantec Norton product update for Windows® XP Service Pack 2

Situation:
You would like more information regarding the Windows® XP Service Pack 2 release from Microsoft and whether your Symantec Norton products are compatible with Service Pack 2.

Solution:
Windows® XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) is a major security-focused operating system upgrade that includes an enhanced Windows firewall and a utility (Windows Security Center) that monitors the state of your computer's security.

Symantec will release a product update to provide native support for the Windows Security Center status utility found in SP2. This update will be available worldwide over the coming weeks and will enable Symantec products to communicate their status to the Windows Security Center utility.

Symantec encourages its customers to install the product update prior to installing SP2 in order to avoid incorrect reporting from Windows Security Center. Symantec’s consumer customers will receive notification from their Norton product when the update is available. Consumers will be able to download the SP2 product update by clicking the LiveUpdate icon found in their Norton security software.

The SP2 product update for English versions of Norton products will be available beginning August 10, 2004. At that time, Symantec will provide detailed information about SP2 and compatibility with Norton products, including frequently asked questions (FAQs) and support documentation. Please check back to http://service.symantec.com/xpinfo on August 10, 2004.

Installed that crap last night and it screwed up all my wireless connections. Had to load a previous system restore point to get my comp working right again. I really don't think SP2 is helpful if you already have firewalls and other security settings installed. Does more harm than good.

If it isn't broken....

Well, you know the rest.

Personally I don't have ANY Microsoft patches on XP. I did everything myself. Basically I shutdown a bunch of unnecessary crap running in the Services.msi

Example: I have a desktop, on this machine I shut down the wireless configuration. I simply dont need it. I also shut down a bunch of other things that simply will never be used and if they are, they are manually activated rather than automatically loaded.

Makes XP far better

I know it's released to corporate users. My laptop at work evidently installed it on itself last night. When I came into my office, my laptop was off. Upon booting, it said one of my registry files was corrupted and it booted using an alternate copy.

Thanx M$.

P.S. There are already websites outlining how to turn off the annoying Windows Security Center BS.

Yeah, its out. Microsoft took it down for a few days, as it has already been causing problems for some. I believe it'll be "re-released" this week for everyone.

Good old Microsoft strikes again! :/

Saw a review (think it was on Cnet.com) that advised against installing SP2. Try their site and see if they have a fix.

Apparently, there's a list of 50 pieces of software that will stop working if you install SP2. Some are THEIR OWN PRODUCTS!!! Sheesh!!

http://news.com.com/Microsoft+lists+...3-5311280.html

Good luck, Aspector!

I figure I can live with the errors until

a) an SP2 fix is released by MS
b) a patch is released by Norton
c) Norton System Works 2005 comes out Oct. 1 (No sense getting 2004, itson the MS list too, and 2005 will be the same price)

Those of you who said your Windows SP2 is working fine, What firewall do you run?

at home ( 2 machines ) no firewall, i'm behind a router....

at work, using blackice ( turned XP firewall off )

as an FYI, at home i use Norton AV, and LiveUpdate automatically updated itself to the latest version which is compatible with SP2. no problems with that either. i DID have to update a few other apps too, like Nero, but that wasnt a problem either...

i searched for norton and sp2 on google and it gave me the page. to be honest with you i wouldn't upgrade to sp2 just yet. if your behind a router and have an anti virus (updated), "normally" you should be good. other than that, if you can get your hands on windows 2000 pro, use that instead. i could go on forever about microsoft's BS but you gotta admit, they did a good job of not giving their users/developers a choice.

using MS =

just my

We are deploying it on a small scale in prep for a large scale mass-reimaging. I have come across a few gotchas, but nothing that couldn't be worked around.

Most software incompatibilities come from the firewall. If you know how to control that via group policies you're home free.

dont go back to 2000 over this, that would just be stupid.

if you dont want SP2 forced upon your machine, there is a way to block Windows Update from forcing it down.
