Slow Internet Connection
I've got Cable at home via Time Warner/Roadrunner.
Historically my speeds (at Speedtest.net) have been:
~3500 Down
~350 Up
The last few weeks, my connection has bogged down. I called Roadrunner support and all they could suggest was "resetting" my Cable Modem by unplugging it, waiting ~30 secs and plugging it back in.
Speeds have been
~ 350 Down (up to ~900 after a modem "reset")
~ 60 Up (up to ~350 up after a modem "reset")
Invariably the speeds will drop over the course of a day or two and page load speeds will become infuriatingly slow. Sometimes, IE will bomb out before the page loads - and I mean pages like google.com.
Any Ideas on why or how to fix?
I've run Malware Bytes and it found no issues.
TIA.

I'm thinking the modem my be on the way out too. Either that or TW/RR is limiting speed in order to sell an "upgrade".

Thats odd, my internet is suddenly really slow now too since yesterday. It's never been like this before either... like usually I can fix it by resetting the modem/router, but it doesn't fix it right now. I'm guessing it'll go away soon though.
you can start calling roadrunner when the speeds dip and IE fails, just so you can set up a history of problems on your acct. Usually they'll tell you to run ping tests and make sure there are no lost packets, if there are then there is probably something else using the bandwidth, or your service just screwing up. and if you are confident there is something physically wrong with your service you can call them and request a tech to come out, i'm pretty sure they can't say no. i don't know exactly how roadrunner works as far as tech support, but i used to work as tech support for comcast(there is a lot of things i am probably forgetting aswell). let me know if i can help any further.
oh and yes, the modem going bad could also be an issue, after awhile they just don't run in the right frequencies for some reason, also new ones sometimes have the same issue

Request a tech to fix the lines. I've got that same problem, sometimes for an entire day the internet will be slow as crap.
I read about something while googling and someone said they used to be an internet technician or something like that. Everytime it rained, the adhesive/gel used to maintain contact with the lines would get dissolved or loosened up, and it would cause bandwidth issues. Subsequently when it stopped raining the problem went away. Exactly the same thing I encountered.... does this happen mostly after/while it rains for you?

Did TW check the levels your modem is connecting at? They can do it remotely. You might be able to check yourself by typing 192.168.100.1 in your browser. Depends on your modem.
TW will send a tech if you ask. At least, they will here...
I had similar problems last year, and the tech replaced the cable from the street to my house and it fixed my problems. It was the original RG59 cable from when my house was built in the late 60s. They replaced it with higher quality RG6. Like Costco, my problems were worse when it rained.
You should also do antivirus and anti-spyware scans. Use more than one program, as some are better at detecting stuff than others.

If your running Windows XP Run these commands.***BEWARE DON'T MESS UP OR YOU WON"T HAVE INTERNET AT ALL***
Go to your START button, then click on Run.
In the box type RUN, it should bring you to a DOS screen.
First step type ipconfig /release
^^^Your internet should shut off after this command is ran.
Last step type ipconfig /renew
If you are still running into any problems do a trace route on your computer to see if there are any unsual or bad connectino problems along the way.

Before posting this last night it was so slow a ping to yahoo.com timed out.

Thats a bald faced, slanderous lie. You must be a competitor. My Music & Movie torrent site is entirely legit and we don't do pron. You've got me confused with Whiskers.

Agree. Will do.

Done that, numerous times. With or without a modem "reset". Doesn't help, at least not for long.
It's nothing with your PC. It's your cable lines or modem. Anyone do work in the area recently? Have you added a TV or 2? Used any splitters? Have a tech come out. They can put a meter on your line to measure the signal.
You can also try to swap your RJ45 patch cable from your PC to modem.

No Splitters, but we do use a router and share the pipe between 3 PC's. However, we've been do that "forever" and there is no new/unusual activity on any of the PC's (i.e. no one is doing some intensive downloading or something recently). Also, when the connection bogs down, it's noticable on whichever PC's are running at the time.
The RJ45 cable is *fairly* new, but I had thought about swapping cables to see if it made a difference.
At this point though, I think it's the service provider or the modem.

Thought things seemed MUCH better today. Just ran this:

I haven't run atest at over 9xx in almost a month.
When I posted last night it was ~900.
Last night, before posting and before a "reset", it wouldn't even *run* a test.

and for the other ppl that posted here, an ipconfig release/renew will have the exact same effects as just shutting off the modem and turning it back on. Oh and if the tech is saying your connection is slow he is probably testing the connection to your modem, therefore there is nothing you can really do from your computer to help.
Ping tests failing sucks, cuz it means that when you are getting info from a specific server you are losing a piece of info that your computer needs to view the desired webpage, so then it'll have to search for what piece is missing and ask the server again for that specific info. If i may ask, how are you running the ping tests?
and if your connection is fine, disregard all of this and enjoy your holidays

At the time I did the ping test, no other PC's were running. I opened a DOS window and just typed "ping yahoo.com" at the command prompt.
Of the 4 "packets" or whatever it is, the first came back, the second timed out, the 3rd came back, the 4th time out. I don't recall the stats, ping times or packet losses.

alright you're doing it the right way, and just a little adjustment to what you are doing will give you more detailed results
in the command prompt type in
"ping www.yahoo.com -t"
the space and the minus t will keep the ping test running an unlimited number of packets untill you stop it
in order to stop the test hold the "ctrl" key and press the letter "c"
just like how you would copy something, this will stop the ping test and show the results
this will give you a bigger test amount in order to see just how much of a percent of your packets are being dropped. your provider would say anything under 10% of packets lost should be good, but really any percentage of packets being lost is usually a sign of something wrong. As for the ping times they don't usually matter as dropped packets usually are the only thing that will noticeably affect your service. But as a rule it usually should be under 100ms each on average.
this is done cuz with 4 test packets you don't really get an idea of how bad or good your connection really is.

My Internet FUCKING SUCKS!
I am ready to break something.
I've loaded maybe 4 pages successfully in the past hour.
Packet loss is ~15%.
Time Warner.
I WISH I had 56-fucking-k.

Dude, have them come out and try to amplify your signal. I have roadrunner, and they did some crap to my connection a while back. Now, I pay for 10mbps download but I get 26mbps download! I think the amplifier did it.
Over here, RR is 5Mb down. You can upgrade to "RR Turbo" for $10 more per month which would bump you up to 8Mb down. You can also upgrade to "RR Turbo Plus" which is 15Mb down (I think it is $25 more per month).
I have no idea about the prices or speed increases in the mainland.
26Mb would be sweet!

Bearcat, call them up and tell that you are not going to pay for any day that you do not have 75% connectivity. Tell them to get a tech out to fix your problem, or if he can't have them take the equipment back and cancel your account. In this day and age, this should not be happening, unless you live in some remote backwater swamp in Ohio and farm and have 9 PhDs and fight fires and drive trucks.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking - fix it or take it back.
Runs "OK" for a while then goes to absolute crap. This was just a little while ago:

I used to live in a remote backwater in Ohio, but was able to escape.
To Toledo -
. Eventually made it all the way to a place where snow is nearly non-existent.
I have 0 PhD's, but do have 9 patents on systems/methods/equipment for fire fighting and farming - ever seen the 3-legged stool for milking cows? The Electric "candle" for checking chicken eggs? Bucket Brigade?

I'd like to get my hands on the asshat that invented the "fire hose".

TW/RR is on the way. Plan is to replace the modem.
Finally caught a time when my connection slowed to 114 kbps download, and it was during normal tech business hours.
After trouble shooting, then getting "escalated" to "Level 3" (wtf? who makes this stuff up) and trouble shooting again, they are sending a tech.
He'll be late in 3 minutes.

FWIW my service plan is 7000kbps Down; 384 Up.
Fire up the pron, here I come.
BTW - when I called earlier today, Option 1 was for ?'s regarding MTV Networks (the whole "Viacom is screwing us thing"); Option 2 was for "Everything Else."
Naturally, I chose Option 2 and, naturally, the TWC/RR system hung up on me. Repeatedly.

congrats on getting your service repaired, and now you and other ppl know exactly what to do next time something like this happens
