The sizzle in the Steak
Helloooooo Canada!
Netflix has officially launched its online streaming rental service and application for iOS devices in Canada, providing Canadian users with instant, on-demand access to a variety of movie and TV show content from the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. Originally released for the iPad earlier this year, the Netflix app added iPhone and iPod touch support in August but remained available only in the U.S. With the launch of Netflix in Canada the same universal Netflix application is now available to Canadian App Store customers. The app allows Netflix members to stream TV shows and movies over either Wi-Fi or 3G from the Netflix catalog and browse and manage their Netflix queue from within the app. Viewing status is automatically synchronized with the Netflix service to allow users to continue watching a movie or TV show on another device from where they left off. The second-generation Apple TV scheduled to ship later this month is also expected to include Netflix support. Netflix 1.1 is available from the U.S. and Canadian App Stores as a free download. An Netflix unlimited subscription is required to use the app; an introductory one-month trial is available for Canadian users at http://www.netflix.ca.

Will definitely subscribe, especially because of what happened last week.
I received a letter from BlockBuster asking to make arrangements to pay an overdue charge from our last rental. The phone number and location of the store was conveniently listed so I could immediately take care of this amount. Apparently BlockBuster (who is rumored to be filing Chapter 11 next week) feels that my outstanding amount could no doubt rescue the company from financial ruin. I have no qualms about paying anything that is owed to anyone, but I don't understand why they couldn't wait for us to come into the store and rent something again before the sent out their rather direct letter.
The amount was $6.00.

'Self-absorbed' Americans may ignore Canada price disparity
THR: American services when they enter the Canadian market typically charge the locals more than they charge stateside. Why the discount for Canadians?
Hastings: We want to provide an incredible value for Canadians, and it's the lowest price we have anywhere in the world for unlimited screenings. And anyone can try it for free for a month. It's pretty addictive.
THR: Are you concerned that American Netflix subscribers will look north and ask for the same discount Canadians get at $7.99?
Hastings: How much has it been your experience that Americans follow what happens in the world? It's something we'll monitor, but Americans are somewhat self-absorbed.

More news. Deal with NBC. All SNL's will be instant streaming. Plus new episodes up day after. All FNL, Battlestar Galactica, The Office, Monk, and lots of other Universal/NBC shows. They're going all out.

Western Digital are a bunch of pricks. Instead of offering Netflix support through a firmware update on their WD TV Live box they instead now sell a WD TV Live Plus box with NetFlix built in.

10's of thousands of movies is limited... how many do you watch!
imo.. in the time i've been with them... they have only gotten better and better and added more and more.... for the same price..
cant beat that...
they are even adding a search feature to xbox live so you dont have to add movies from the pc.. you can do it all on the xbox now...

What I meant is, they don't seem to have first run movies available. And TV content is limited by the Canadian networks not allowing the shows they have rights for available to NetFlix. Canadian networks have to pay ABC/CBS/NBC/Fox to air their shows. Their not likely to pay all that money and then allow NetFlix to come in and steal their thunder.
Still to early to jump on the Canadian Netflix wagon.

Netflix on PS3 goes disc-free, gets 1080i streaming and 5.1 surround sound
Posted Oct 14th 2010 9:08AM by Nilay Patel
Rejoice, PS3 owners, your Netflix streaming experience just got vastly better than anything else on the market. Starting October 18 Netflix on the PS3 will no longer require a disc, and it'll stream some content with 1080i resolution and / or 5.1-channel surround audio, while everyone else will be stuck with a max of 720p stereo for the time being. Oh, and you'll get subtitles on some content as well. Netflix is partnering with Dolby on the audio side, and the surround format will be Dolby Digital Plus, which is the same codec used by the VUDU HDX streaming service -- we're guessing it'll require a tiny bit more bandwidth but the results should sound pretty great. Netflix says 5.1 will come to other platforms "over time," so we'll see how long that takes -- and given that the PS3 is now disc-free and the company's eschewed the SRS surround features baked into its Silverlight-based platform, we're guessing Microsoft's exclusivity period has now completely run its course. Video and PR after the break.
Netflix Taps Dolby for High-Definition Audio
Dolby Digital Plus Brings 5.1-Channel Surround Sound to Movies and TV Shows Instantly Streamed from the Leading Online Movie Subscription Service
LOS GATOS, Calif. and SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Netflix, Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX) and Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: DLB) today announced that Netflix has selected Dolby® Digital Plus to deliver 5.1-channel surround sound for TV shows and movies streamed instantly over the Internet. Beginning October 18, the PlayStation®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system from Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. will be the first consumer electronics device to support 5.1-channel surround sound on movies streamed from Netflix. Netflix said more devices would be added over time to support streaming digital surround sound.
"Netflix is committed to delivering an unparalleled experience to its members who watch TV shows and movies streamed instantly over the Internet," said Greg Peters, Netflix vice president of product development. "Netflix required an audio solution that could efficiently deliver an outstanding surround sound experience for a wide range of consumer devices. Dolby Digital Plus proved to be the best solution to meet our needs and the needs of our device partners."
Dolby Digital Plus supports up to 7.1 channels of premium-quality surround sound and allows consumers to enjoy outstanding high-definition audio from broadcasts, streaming and downloaded media, and Blu-ray Disc™. To date, tens of millions of TVs, set-top boxes, Blu-ray Disc players, Audio/Video receivers, and mobile phones have shipped with Dolby Digital Plus.
"Dolby Digital Plus makes the online entertainment experience rich, realistic, and memorable," said John Couling, vice president, marketing, products & platforms, Dolby Laboratories. "Dolby is excited to be working with Netflix and its partners to provide premium Dolby surround sound to Netflix subscribers. This collaboration will enable subscribers to enjoy movies and TV shows presented in surround sound just as the artists and directors intended."
Dolby Digital Plus is a sophisticated audio system based on Dolby Digital that has been adopted by many of the world's leading broadcasters, TV and set-top-box manufacturers, and device makers to provide consumers with full digital surround sound. It is designed to adapt to the changing demands of entertainment delivery while retaining compatibility with existing Dolby Digital 5.1-channel home theater systems.

Netflix formally launches $7.99 streaming-only plan, bumps unlimited DVD plans by a buck or more
BY TIM STEVENS
POSTEDNOV 22ND 2010 08:44AM
Well you had to know it was coming: the streaming-only plan Netflix unofficially rolled out last month is now being officially deployed. Thankfully the company opted to go with the lower of the two prices it was toying with, $7.99, which pits it squarely against Hulu Plus. However, the prices for all unlimited plans that include DVDs have jumped by at least one dollar, meaning you'll now be paying $9.99 for a one DVD at a time plan (though the $4.99, two DVDs a month offer will still give you a penny back from your Lincoln). So, it's a cheaper option for trailblazers who have abandoned physical media and a dark day for everyone else.

I signed on couple of weeks ago, movies and content look AMAZING on the iphone, they look like garbage on the 360 and PS3. I mean seriously, horrible, like annoying to watch. I havent noticed 1080 on the PS3, maybe I wasnt watching a supported movie? dunno but Im enjoying the content on the iphone.

Started a trial today. I'll see how it looks on my Apple TV (family room on a high-end 1080p LCD TV) and Wii/X360 (basement on a low-end 720p plasma).
I know that I have the resolutions a little mixed up -- the games are in the basement for a reason. If I want a pristine movie viewing experience I'll just rent the BluRay.

I'm not going to watch a 2 hour movie on my iPhone. My arms gonna be more sore.
Maybe I'll try out a trial on my ps3.... See if it's that bad. Hopefully find 1080i content.

i didnt watch it as a sole activity - i was at work, or home trying to fall asleep, or just watching parts of a movie to see how it looks. basically anytime im kinda bored or ADD and looking for something to do.
