iphone worth it to switch to cingular?

i am currently in need of a new phone. my current is t-mobile. the service i great but i am not please by their selection of phones. I am contemplating whether or not i should switch to cingular and get an iphone or wait for the razr2 or sidekick lx from t-mobile.

I switched from Verizon. In my experience, I had better service with Verizon, but the iPhone has made up for any deficiencies.

There are some drawbacks to the iPhone, but my overall experience has been very positive overall.

Anyone in the NYC area care to share their experience with cingular/att and the iphone?

I switched to Cingular from Verizon to get an 8800 and then switched to Sprint because of the shitty service and dropped calls. I won't be trying Cingular again for a long time.

You don't need to switch anymore. My thread -
https://acurazine.com/forums/technology-16/unlock-iphone-free-use-any-gsm-373926/
shows you how to unlock the iphone for use with Tmobile.
If you are not comfy doing the unlock, there will be a GUI on click solution in the coming days. Dont bother switching carriers if you dont want to and are happy with Tmobile.

what are the chances of the unlock being " reverted" in some future update? I know apple has taken a neutral stance on hacks, is it the same with the unlock?

Well, given that the current status of most of the hacks is in the same boat and the regular reports of the updates causing phones to fail and require a full factory restore, I would guess that the unlock will be wiped out by the next major update, causing all the unlocked phones to have to be unlocked again.

that's what I figured. I would not feel comfortable going the unlock route myself, although if you never update the phone you would probably be ok.

Any chance of turning the phone into a "paper weight" during the unlock process?

Absolutely. While I haven't read of one being bricked as a result of the unlocking process, I'd be very paranoid.

And who's not to say that it wouldn't be bricking during a software update?

None havent been bricked from what i've seen. Ive unlocked 9 phones so far with ease. And unless apple is releasing something that you absolutely need, i say stick with the current version of itunes and dont update the iphone. I told the people i did it for to be happy that they are amongst a very few that have tmobile iphones, and not to update the phone. Most phones never get updates, think of the iphone as the same, it works well enough as is.

Thats one way to look at it. On the other hand, in all likelihood there will be a fair number of significant software upgrades to the iPhone. I'm not alone in thinking that the physical product was released before the software end was up to par, hence the various missing basic features.

It does work great as is, but it would be a shame to miss out on future capabilities just to stick with your current network. Sell your current phone on eBay to cover your cancellation fees and switch to AT&T

Let me address your second statement first. Some people i did it for didnt want to loose their numbers or had a great plan that att doesnt offer. And now onto the first statement. The most that will happen is that the exploiters will upgrade their phones with apples update and find solutions around them. The most people will have to do is wait till the update has been exploited and then they can update and re-unlock. It sounds tedious, but if you want the phone on your network that bad, then you have to play the game. I say people with unlocked iphones will be behind att iphones in terms of being able to update by mere weeks. And most people i know didnt buy iphone for PDA like functions, they bought it for ipod features and the nice screen.

Fair enough, I can see where you (they) are coming from.

I do not believe it syncs with outlook... unless there is a hack or 3rd party app that does it.

As for PDA features...the calendar is ok. Syncs well with iCal, if you are a mac user, although you cannot assign categories to entries. I keep all of my stuff separated on my normal calendar (work, school, home, etc), but lose that on the iPhone. There is also no 'to do' list, which is very annoying.

BIGMAN:

Are there any limitations with this unlock process? For example, can you get incoming pic messages? Text and reply with no extra charges?
Right now I have a unlocked razr and have problems getting incoming pic messages on Tmobile.

I would be more than willing to switch to ATT if it wasnt for the 200 sms limitation. I use over 1k a month and I can just see those adding up quick.

DAMN I was about to go buy it today. then I saw this:
http://digg.com/apple/3G_16_Gig_iPho..._the_same_time

A leaked advert suspected to be from T-Mobile Germany, indicates a 16GB iPhone with 3G support (HSDPA and UMTS), shall be making its way to German shores for 12th November 2007.If this is V2, expect the US model to follow within a similar time frame. Keep your SMS typing, Safari surfing, and cover flow searching fingers crossed!

Should I wait to get an updated iPhone or should I just buy one now? I currently have AT&T but my contract is going to be done soon and I was going to get a W910i but I need a device that plays videos too, so I decided on making the jump. Should I do it now or wait? What is speculated to be the next iPhone's features?
