Apple: iPhone News and Discussion Thread
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but no. The iPhone data plan is mandatory and iPhones are just expensive paperweights without them. Which kinda sucks, hopefully by the time the iPhone is considered "obsolete" at least Apple will release some sort of update to allow it to be used as just an iTouch. but I doubt it....
Some of us have complained about almost infinite sync times with the new firmware but at least we don't have it as bad as this guy! His iPhone took over 8 hours to sync and he's got the time lapsed video to prove it!

I've given up on syncing cause really whats the point unless I want to add something, I've got no need since the app store is on the phone. But this is still ridiculous!! my syncs are still taking an hour!

When I complained on Twitter about a 2 hour iPhone sync, Giz reader Brandon Lusk told me I was lucky. He had a much longer sync, sometimes over 6 hours. I called bullshit. And so, he provided me with two videos, time-lapsed; this one is over 8 hours. That's a full night of sleep. That's a full day of high school. That's longer than it takes to fly cross country, or drive from SF to Los Angeles. After seeing this video, I stopped complaining and tried to figure out what caused Brandon's problem with him.
To troubleshoot the problem, he restored his phone from scratch, but even after reinstalling 7.7.1 iTunes and 2.0.2 firmware in his never-jailbreaked iPhone 3G, the sync is unbearably long. We even tried syncing on an Air and an iMac and used another cable. The only outstanding set of data Brandon had is that he loads 74 apps to his phone. And he says that by adding apps one at a time, his sync/backup time slowly goes up—so it's not a single buggy app ruining the process.
Now, I'm sure Brandon's case is an exceptionally complicated problem. He still has an iTunes error message pop up when he syncs, for example. And even when we both load up 50 apps on our phones, his sync is much longer at 4 hours. This is clearly not a normal example, but that doesn't mean it's not real, and it doesn't mean it isn't related to the big problem many have been suffering from since firmware 2.00 hit. Maybe Brandon can be our poster boy for the eternal sync/backup problem. Or, until Apple fixes it, we can watch this video every time we complain about the iPhone's sync times and we can feel like it could have been worse. Like 8 hours' worth of worse. But damn if that video doesn't make you happy when it's finally done with the transfer.
The song in the video is Foreplay/Long Time, by Boston, FWIW. [Brandon's blog, Foreplay/Long Time Amazon, iTunes]
His setup:
Both machines running 10.5.4 and iTunes 7.7.1 (but again, this started on 7.7)
Air is a day 1 1.6GHZ, 80GB and the iMac is a 2.8GHZ 4GB RAM 320GB HDD
When I started, I had
997.1 MB of music (163 songs, all .m4a files, except 27 .m4p)
5 playlists
93.6 MB of photos
27 ringtones
No movies or TV shows
47 MB video (all video podcasts)
Contacts, calendar synced to MobileMe
3 other IMAP email accounts
74 apps (a lot, I know, but certainly not as many as you could possibly have)
The sync added
No music
No playlists
No photos
No ringtones
No movies or TV shows
3.5 GB of video (99 podcasts, and this part only took about 10 minutes, as you can see in the video)
6 app updates (2 of which were not installed because of an error)
No new apps
The backup folder produced this time weighs in at 9,771 items and 848.1 GB
My observations:
It doesn't matter if the app updates error or not, my last sync was 6:49 with 4 app updates, all of which were successful.
Since 2.0, backup and sync has been very long, but not to this extent. Usually 1.5 - 2 hours.
It started getting this bad about a month ago, right before iTunes 7.7.1 came out, an app crashed mid install via Wi-Fi app store, crashing the phone to the Apple logo but not booting all the way.
When it crashed like that, I put it in DFU mode and restored from backup, immediately had the same problem.
Back to DFU mode and restored with fresh firmware—instead of crashing daily, it did it every few days, requiring DFU mode and fresh download of firmware.
Did a complete wipe from within the phone, installed fresh firmware again, and started from scratch. New iTunes installation (removing support files first, empty trash, reboot, then reinstall) new firmware download.
Since then, no more Apple logo of death, and very few app crashes in general, but still excruciating backup/sync times.
If I skip the backup (I'm inclined to do that these days, since they are usually corrupted, even with a fresh copy on the desktop) it still takes at least 2-3 hours to sync.

My sync-before-last took forfuckingever too. It was at least 2 hours. I left for my brother's house to go eat with my family, hung out at the house for a while, then when I came home my iPhone sync wasn't even done yet. I was pissed, but after a while I realized my iPhone froze and I needed to restore the iPhone. What a PITA. the sync after that only took an hour and a half though, still ridiculous for what it is. I could probably move the files manually faster than that.
Apple truly is my love-hate company.

Just got the 3g. I really really like it. Anyways, have anyone figured out a way around picture messages other than sending them as an email? I have looked around and found Swirlymms, but I guess there is not an updated one for 2.0.2...
I would say that that is the only thing about the iphone that I do not like. Other than the random slowness.

what kind of case do you guys have?
i've been looking into getting one since i don't want to scratch it when i eventually drop it.
i saw the incase rubber-ish ones, but they're kind of a PITA when trying to take it out of jean pockets.

I hate those rubber condom things...I got a nice leather Belkin one that it slides into...Some people don't like sliding it in and out of the case every time you want to use it, but I don't mind...and I got a screen protector, that was first priority.
So I'm going to AT&T today to upgrade my iPhone to the 3G and give my wife my old iPhone.
Problem is, my phone is jailbroken, and I don't have the cable here to get all my stuff off and reset it. Are they going to give me any problems, or is all the activation done through iTunes? I mean I know I activated it first in iTunes, but are they going to need to see my iPhone to do anything and give me crap?

Painless process. Told him I wanted to give my old iphone to my wife, he said just have her plug it into iTunes when you get home.
Got my new 16GB 3G. Much nicer feel to it so far, and it's damn fast. I would venture to say 2x faster than the original.
AND he gave it to me for the upgrade price, even though I'm less than 1 year into my 2 year contract. Thought that was pretty solid of him. Work pays for it anyway, but it was still a cool thing to do.
Now...can the 3Gs be jailbroken?

Does anybody else get a text message every time they miss a call? All it says is the number and the time they called... Most likely something within my plan that I signed up for.
It's also not very useful seeing as the phone already notifies you of missed calls.

ya it's stupid fucking rogers/fido and their dumbass value packages. apparently you can call and request for whocalled and VM texts to be stopped while retaining your valuepack for the savings, I'm going to call tomorrow and request the change, I'll report back my success.
I have the griffen wave case, it's not rubbery like those stupid silicon ones, but has a little but of grip for the hand, but not so much it sticks on your pockets etc. However I may check out a leather case because these plastic ones tend to get crap stuck behind them too easily.
griffin has a case that's leather but glued onto a plastic case.
the leather seems decent since it's comfortable in pocket and doesn't stick. but i hear the leather eventually unglues itself from the pastic.
there are just so many cases to look at...

On my old iPhone if I deleted mail I receive through Gmail, it keeps the mail on the server, so I can still get at it online. With the 3G, if I delete email, it deletes it out of my inbox in Gmail as well. This is definitely not how I want it. Is there a way to tell it not to reflect on the server? I keep lots of important email in my inbox, and I like keeping my iPhone inbox cleaned out.
Yesterday my new 3G downloaded 298 messages. I spent 20 minutes deleting them all, and the next time I signed into Gmail online, all my email was gone out of the inbox. Sucks.
