also, i dont like the fact that you HAVE to get at least 1 month of 3G service from Verizon to unlock the Wifi capabilities. how freaking lame is that!

I saw the ASUS slate at the Microsoft store. Talk about bad ass. They outfitted it with the i5. There are a few new slate that are out already. Dell has their new net book thing where it turns into a slate. That is pretty cool.
Mouse, I wasn't too intrigued of the one month of verizon service to purchase the galaxy tab, but damn it's an awesome little machine.
Kind of wish I would have waited so I didn't get the iPad. But the iPad is still pretty useful. I just wish it was smaller.

Gurus, please help...
I am in need of a tablet that can do the following two things and want to know if the iPad can. The third would just be gravy...
1. Have the user hand write notes that are savable and retrievable. Converting the handwriting to text would be cool but not necessary.
2. Exchange email. No plugins, no routing through gmail... Full functionality like on a Blackberry. Send/receive mail, accept/create calendar invites, etc... View attachments (Word, Excel, PDF). Recipient should have NO idea the user is on an iPad at the beach rather than at his desk in the office.
3. (This would be gravy) Edit MS Office docs natively. User receives an email with a spreadsheet/word doc attachment, opens the attachment, edits it, sends it back. No OppenOffice crap, just good old MSOffice functionality.
DOES THIS EXIST??????

Wow, awesome. I didn't know #2 was possible (and truthfully hadn't even thought of OWA).

I read my e-mail almost exclusively on my iPad because the client is sooo much faster than Outlook runs on my laptop.

However iOS doesn't support categorizing or color coding events which is a problem for me. If the event is already categorized via Outlook for example then it can see it but I can't create an event on the iPad and categorize it.
MS office is not out on iDevices well except for One Note. I'm sure they're working on it since I don't think they decided just to bring one note to iOS. Office web apps don't work on iOS browsers.
Your needs are best handled by a Windows tablet. It doesn't have the UI, battery life of an iPad but it will do what you need.

Also I think previous versions of OWA require IE to work. I think it wasn't until Exchange 2010 that MS enabled support for 3rd party browsers.

I don't do the first version of anything right when it comes out. Plus, this isn't for me, it's for someone who will expect it to work correctly right out of the box. I assure you there will be no reading of the manual or browsing forums to figure out how to make it do something or updating its formware to fix some problem...
Me, I will wait for something more Windows oriented...

For #1 http://blogs.computerworld.com/16474...idea_sketching
For #2 I believe the built in mail app should be fine.
For #3 look into documents to go.

How about a macbook air instead?

Thanks Mike and doop.
Looks like it may just work.
Doop, this person already has a laptop, needs a smaller lighter faster way to have full functioning email and docs on the go, but that is larger than current Blackberry. Also, like me, he is tired of trying to find the correct legal pad for the matter he needs to work on when he is out of the office...

I noticed today that the rumor sites are starting to say that inventory of Ipads are starting to become constrained. Ipad2 may be here before you know it.
#2546
It will be here soon! They have been making them for weeks.

oh are you talking about this - does that connection go both ways or is it only for importing photos?

iPad Camera Connection Kit
The iPad Camera Connection Kit gives you two ways to import photos and videos from a digital camera: using your camera’s USB cable or directly from an SD card. iPad supports standard photo formats, including JPEG and RAW

it only imports. sorry its only one way.
but you can use it as a temp way to store some photos and quickly review them, although probably not enough for like say your trip to India.
it also reads RAW files too.

my friend was using it at Vegas to off load his memory cards for his 5D2, pretty cool to be able to see them right away on a bigger IPS screen.
although i suppose a laptop would work too.
