Apple CEO Steve Jobs on Thursday said 200,000 applications are available in his company's mobile app store - and they all benefit because they're not built in Flash.

In a post on Apple's website, Jobs listed reasons none of those apps support Flash, a format that supports video, animation, games and other content and is made by tech competitor Adobe.

Some tech bloggers have criticized Apple for not supporting Flash on its mobile devices, including the iPad, iPhone and iPod. But Jobs said Adobe Flash is a format for the past.

Performance, not business strategy, guides Apple's decision not to use the format, he said.

"Flash was created during the PC era – for PCs and mice," he wrote in the post. "Flash is a successful business for Adobe, and we can understand why they want to push it beyond PCs. But the mobile era is about low power devices, touch interfaces and open web standards – all areas where Flash falls short."

Adobe has complained its business "could be harmed" by Apple's decision not to use the format.

Jobs listed several specific reasons Apple doesn't use Flash. Some of the more interesting ones:

_ "iPhone, iPod and iPad users aren’t missing much video," he wrote.

_Apple products run more reliably without Flash: "Flash is the number one reason Macs crash."

_Flash isn't made for touch-screen devices: "... Many Flash websites rely on 'rollovers,' which pop up menus or other elements when the mouse arrow hovers over a specific spot." Apple's touch screens don't use rollovers.

_And, most important, Jobs said, is that Flash slows down app development: " We cannot be at the mercy of a third party deciding if and when they will make our enhancements available to our developers."

U.S. Apple Retail Stores to Close From 4-5 PM Tomorrow in Advance of iPad 3G Launch

Thursday April 29, 2010 11:38 PM EST
Written by Eric Slivka

As noted by 9 to 5 Mac, Apple will be closing each of its over 220 retail stores in the United States from 4:00-5:00 PM local time tomorrow to prepare for the launch of the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G. Even Apple's flagship Fifth Avenue store in Manhattan, typically open 24 hours a day, will close for preparations.

The store will be closed from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 30, to prepare for the arrival of iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G.
Customers who pre-ordered their 3G-capable models prior to April 19th have seen their orders shipping for delivery tomorrow.

ill probably take a quick stroll by the apple store after i get off work tomorrow at 5:30

Looks like a few video apps aren't allowing streaming over 3G or downsampled video streams.

iPad 3G denies ABC player, downsamples iTunes store video previews over AT&T
Posted Apr 30th 2010 7:07PM by Ross Miller

Well ain't that a kick in the pants. Reports are coming in from newly-minted iPad 3G videophiles that iTunes store previews and Netflix streams are getting downsampled over AT&T's network. The folks at iLounge have been tinkering enough to confirm the iTunes issue (we're still waiting for FedEx to drop off our 3G tablets so we can corroborate ourselves) and, lo and behold, ABC player flat out refuses to work over AT&T's 3G network, instead displaying an oddly familiar message: "Please connect to a Wi-Fi network to use this application. Cellular networks are not supported at this time." Perhaps an update will ensue to fix such limits, but in the meantime, we're sure at least someone at Sling HQ is having an awkward chuckle.
http://i.engadget.com/2010/04/30/ipa...-video-previe/

kind of sucks, down sampled seems ok IMO but flat out saying to connect over wifi sux.

ohh yea i also read that HP canned the HP slate, at least canned it on running win7 because they weren't happy with the performance.

so now that they bought out palm, maybe we will see a slate running some version of webOS?

if its still as bulky as those pictures we saw, then no thanks.

It just makes sense. Desktop OS's on a tablet have never been good. Now WebOS on a tablet on the other hand

Thinking about buying the iPad, and wife had a random question that I wasn't sure about.

Several of the websites that she likes have mobile versions on her iPhone, even when viewed through Safari (even CNN has one). On the iPad, will she see the full internet version, or just that same mobile version?

It's up to the website to set the iPad to either mobile or full version. Everysite I've gone to does the full version and even if it did the mobile version there should be a link that takes you to the full version.

Bought it, how can everything inside of me say I shouldn't but when i look at it all I can think of is that it looks like fun?

Just a nice toy, but at the end of the day I think we will enjoy it.

I did on mine with blackra1n before the most recent software or firmware upgrade (not exactly sure the right name), but after about a week, it did the orange bar of death for my iTunes so I restored my iPhone. I know there was a way to fix it, but it was kind I was confuzled after reading the first few steps..I'm not very well versed in all those 'backdoor' screens/modes/etc.

DOS on computers for example scares the crap outta me.

If you have a 3GS and had your hashes saved on Saurik's server, all you had to do was modify your hosts file and restore with redsn0w. It's even easier if you have a 3G.

You don't know what you're missing, until you find it.

edit: Buddy of mine just did it to his 3GS which was locked on 3.1.3 with the latest modem firmware. He said it took him about a minute to do it.

You're not missing anything. Continue living your life, nothing to see here... your phone does all you need it to do.

Categories, SBSettings, OpenSSH, Krikae, Appsync, Winterboard, Rename, Backgrounder, Installer... just to name a few.

everyone's needs are different. I needed better e-mail accessibility and notifications, which I found with intelliscreen. I also wanted better function control, which i found with SBS.

I know your supposed to change the root password so I downloaded terminal but it crashes as soon as I open it.

I got PDAnet going on it with wifi, so thats worth it I guess. Google Voice seems cool, but crashes on the voicemail screen. Other then that, there are a lot of stuff, no idea whats good vs garbage, plus a lot of items costing $$ which is stupid since an update can break the jailbreak. We should have a thread of good Jailbroken Iphone apps...

You don't necessarily have to do anything. This link talks about some good reasons to jb... http://www.saurik.com/id/12

Changing the root/admin passwords was one of the easiest things to do, I guess it helped that my mobile terminal never crashed. Which reminds me, I need to change mine. http://justanotheriphoneblog.com/wor...-root-password
