And if I do get a tablet, its not because I need a full OS on it, but the idea of having a full OS on it would be a nice thing for me (I can surf the net with either tethering, or with my 3G card, etc., Flash support, etc) but if its slow as shit, then whats the point.
I don't fault HP for putting W7 on it, but if it runs like shit, then its worthless.

iPad 3G orders being processed?
By Ross Miller posted Apr 19th 2010 8:04PM
We've had a number of reports come in that various people's bank accounts were giving simultaneous good and bad news. First the latter: a pending charge upwards of $888 for an order you probably placed a month ago and forgot about -- hope tax day didn't wipe you out too much. The good news, should you brave that sudden financial burden, is that it emanates from Apple Computers and seems to indicate that the gang in Cupertino is, as indicated in an earlier email, on track to start delivering iPad 3Gs in late April. Got an outstanding reservation? Better check with your online money handler...

I had the same issue with FIOS. It was such a pain in the ass that I ended up returning the Ipad. Bestbuy tried to charge me a re-stocking fee. I had to explain to them this whole wifi issue and how it's basically a "defect" in the product. They weren't buying it at first, but then the guy at the returns desk went over and talked to the guys at the in-store Apple stand. He came back, said they confirmed the issue, and I'm now $700 richer
. Thinking about picking up a 3G version, but I'm more inclined at this point to wait for the second generation model when they've worked out the kinks, it has more features, and it's half the price!

It has nothing to do with WPA vs WEP I'm on WPA also and I still have the problem. It comes and goes. Though I still can't be more than 30ft from my router and get signal, though I my other devices are fine and the other 802.11n PC can be on the other side of the house and get great signal and stream movies from my server, while the iPad can't leave the next room over.![Why Me](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/whyme.gif)
I'll give them a month and I'm taking it back under warranty, this thing is getting ridiculous.

I don't think so. Everything they make is all aluminum their other devices don't have this problem and like you said the wifi antennae are behind the plastic apple logo.

And comparatively the plastic macbooks tend to get better reception than their Al counterparts.

Well whenever my new 15 MBP shows up I'll be sure to test it's wifi range but the new models have the wifi antennae around the grill of the optical drive FWIW.

I havent had any issues in nearly a year with my 12" mbp.
And I never really had any issues with my old 15" powerbook, but my wifes macbook definitely got better range. She'd have full bars and I'd be down 2-3.

Princeton University has detailed wireless issues with Apple's iPad that have resulted in the university blocking several of the devices from its wireless network. While frequently invisible to end users and apparently unrelated to most early complaints from iPad owners about Wi-Fi connectivity issues, the iPad issue documented by Princeton can result in interference of network usage by other devices.
Princeton reports that they have seen a number of iPads with errors in their Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) protocol.
The malfunction we see is that the iPad uses DHCP to obtain a lease, renews the lease zero or more times (as expected), but then continues using the IP address without renewing the lease further. The iPad allows the DHCP lease to expire, but it continues using the IP address after allowing the lease to expire. The incident continues for some time (typically hours); usually it ends when the iPad asks for a new DHCP lease, or the iPad disconnects from the network.
Essentially, the iPad is continuing to use IP addresses that have already been reclaimed by the university's routers. Similar problems could explain certain issues that users have been seeing in their own personal use of the device, although user complaints regarding Wi-Fi performance have primarily focused on poor signal strength and inconsistent connections.
As of April 19th, 25 of the 41 iPads on the campus network had shown this issue while 9 have been blocked due to repeated problems. Princeton is reportedly working with Apple to address this issue, but has developed a tentative workaround to assist with the problems. Some of the nine blocked iPads have since been unblocked after the owners performed the suggested workaround. Princeton's current policy with respect to iPads is to allow them onto their network, and in the case of DHCP lease issues, notify the user and point them to the workaround. Only if problems continue after that point would a specific device be blocked.

Yeah, I heard about that one. Apple better act fast... I know how IT departments can be. It's very easy for them to lose trust in a device or platform, and not at all easy to gain it back.

Man loses part of finger in iPad theft
Victim purchased Apple's latest must-have item for a friend in Canada

DENVER - A man is missing his new iPad and part of his pinky finger after a robbery at a Denver shopping mall.
Fifty-nine-year-old Bill Jordan says he just purchased Apple's latest must-have item at Cherry Creek Mall on Thursday and was near the parking garage when a thief grabbed the bag tied around Jordan's hand.
He says the bag wouldn't come off and the thief yanked it so hard that it stripped part of Jordan's pinky down to the bone. Doctors later amputated part of the finger.
Jordan had purchased the tablet computer for a friend in Canada. Denver police were still searching for the culprit Tuesday.

Tried out an iPad today at the Apple store in Oak Brook. My daughter signed into her Facebook to post a status from one, and while she was trying it out, it dropped the wireless connection and she couldn't log out for a while.

A few other notes of interest have been collected on the internet. This includes:
- USB headphone/headset will work on the iPad through the connection kit. Skype phone call was tested and "the quality was just terrific" - Tidbits
- USB keyboards can be used - TUAW
- iLounge had some early notes which revealed that the iPad emails pictures out at 2048x1536 resolution rather than the iPhone's 800x600 resolution, but if you copy/paste the images into an email, you can get full resolution images emailed out.
- Once you connect to your Mac, iPhoto brings in full resolution images with EXIF information intact. - iLounge

I'll send you my 64 gig ipad by Tuesday for... wait, too good of toy to try to resale at this point.
Go to Apple online and order... there is some bit of satisfaction knowing ATT or Best Buy didn't handle it first.

There seems to be plenty where I am. I saw a lot of people looking at them, I only saw one person buy one and when he bought it I heard him say "I don't know what I'm going to do with it but it's a cool toy to have". that pretty much sums it up.
I notice I'm using it less, I still use it everyday but I'm back to using my PC for most of my web surfing. It doesn't handle my type of web surfing well. Which is having many tabs open at the same time and jumping back and forth between tabs while watching hulu or a movie from my server

That said I'd prefer to use it to casually surf instead of my iPhone, especially since my iPhone is so slow compared to the iPad. When my MBP shows up on Monday I can see myself pulling this out instead of a big 15 laptop to surf if I'm at a restaurant or something. However if I want to work on my calendar I'd use my laptop since my exchange calendar system doesn't work as well on the iPad then it would on a laptop.

I use TeamViewer (remote connect software - free for personal use) to connect all my computers. No server needed. The iPhone version works well enough on the iPad, but I'm hoping they'll put out an iPad version for the extra screen real estate.
