Oddly I don't think they are targeting Echo or Google Home with it. It appears for some reason they are going after Sonos instead with the added ability of siri. That is at least the way I took it from the presentation. To me that is an odd stance to take as the market for that I don't believe is very large. Also was there any mention of how they would interact at all if you had more than one of them in your home?

At first I was like, "Cool! Apple dropped the price on the new 13" non-touchbar MBP to $1,299." But now I see that the price dropped only because it went from the original's 256GB storage to 128GB.
The new model with the 256GB SSD is still the same $1,499.
$1,269 for Refurbished 13.3-inch MacBook Pro 2.0GHz Dual-core Intel Core i5 with Retina Display - Space Gray
Originally released October 2016
13.3-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display; 2560-by-1600 native resolution at 227 pixels per inch
8GB of 1866MHz LPDDR3 onboard memory
256GB PCIe-based onboard SSD
720p FaceTime HD Camera
Intel Iris Graphics 540
or
$1,499 for the new 2017 model?
13.3-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display; 2560-by-1600 native resolution at 227 pixels per inch
2.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor
Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
8GB 2133MHz LPDDR3 memory
256GB SSD storage1
Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640
Let's see how much faster the 2017 model is vs the 2016 model.

I have my echo dot connect to my receiver via bluetooth... I can connect to amazon music, pandora, spotify and even to my phone (so Apple music too if I had the service) and my sound system actually rocks my house. For $350 for a smart speaker is stupid... esp with Siri that is behind Google Home and Alexa. Fail... should have been $299 at best...
Hell I didn't even buy my echo dots until they were on sale...

I have way too much Sonos in my house to justify a HomePod. Whichever service is the first to support Sonos is the one I will choose. It looks like Alexa will be first.
Apple is going to have to do a lot to catch Sonos. The expandability, the Sonosnet network, wireless 5.1 setup, and the 50+ services supported by Sonos work great.

no, Apple announced they're updating that in 2018. It will be more "pro" oriented.
it will be completely redesigned.

The homepod is:
1) terribly named
2) not worth it if you already have sonos or house that isn't homekit enabled.
The iMac Pro looks like it will be fantastic for pros...that price deters me, sadly. Its really for people who need that processing power ALL the time.
The new iPad Pro and iOS updates are pretty great. They finally added functionality that brings it closer to really replacing a computer. If adobe can get their shit together and make the lightroom app more up to par...I would jump on a 10.5"

I don't think the mid-2017 MBP is worth it over the Late 2016. It's mostly just a jump to Kaby Lake CPUs.
Theres also no mention if all 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports on the 13" run at full speed.
Coffee Lake cpus are coming out really soon and Cannon Lake cpus towards the end of 2017.
With Coffee Lake there's a CPU that could allow the possibility of a quad-core 13" MBP.

what ill give the home pod is encryption.

Alexa is not a gimmick, it works and works well. But, the home pod is being marketed as a speaker, so that's the difference.

so you could go lower

really its a way to voice order stuff on amazon and tell it play music.
I use voice control in my car...and the times I do use it at home...my phone is right there.
So, its not a MUST HAVE item, therefore gimmick.

I use it for a bunch of things, never used it to order anything on Amazon. Home control, TV control, Music, News, Radio, its much better then Siri from what it hears and understand.

You can argue that almost anything is a gimmick I guess.
