WeatherBug! Is a really neat weather program that gives you radar and pictures from live cameras in the area. You can get weather for multiple areas which is what makes it interesting. My friend lives near brownsville, Tx and there's a hurricane about to hit her so I added that area to my list and I can look at cameras to see how bad the weather is and the radar to see how well formed and how close the storm is. Pretty neat. Currently in Brownsville the wind is at 39mph but that can vary wildly depending on where you are in location to the hurricane.

Remember that Aurora Feint Puzzle/RPG game that we told you we liked? Turns out we don't like it anymore. In fact, we're actually pretty damn scared of this app, seeing as Apple de-listed them from the App Store due to privacy and security issues. To the developer's credit, they were forthright with what they did and didn't do.

According to their forums, if you opt-in to the community feature, Aurora Feint looks through your contact list, sends it unencrypted to their servers, and matches you up with your friends who are currently playing right now. Great feature, for sure, but that whole looking through our contact list and sending it in plain text to your server is cause for us to go OMGWTFBBQ.

When we discovered that the Apple SDK allowed us to look through your contact list we thought it would be a great idea to automatically show you which friends are playing the game. Why automatically? Well, everyone always complains about the keyboard on the iPhone and how annoying it is to type on it. So we thought, "Hey, why don't we make this feature REALLY easy to use – no typing!" And such, the community feature was born. Some people have said that it would have been ok if we had a better notice explaining what was going on. I agree! We weren't trying to be sneaky about how this worked. It was just overlooked. No one we showed it to even asked a question about it – nor did we. It just simply never came up as a potential issue when we beta tested the game with early users.

Upside is, if you didn't use the community feature, you're OK.

In the 1.0 version of the game we just didn't get around to doing everything we wanted to do in time for the launch: remember we tried to do a high quality game in 10 weeks flat. So, if you opt-in to the community feature, when you refresh your friends, the data is sent unencrypted to our web servers. Before you freak out though, let me explain why this was done. We just thought that it was a cool feature and that we'd implement security stuff if we became popular. To that end, the web server we launched with was a teeny box with almost no power. We spent the first few days scrambling to scale our servers. We really had no idea how popular we were going to be. We added this feature in near the end of our development cycle and simply decided that we didn't have enough time to spend to make it secure in advance of knowing if it was even going to be a hit.

Good intentions by slightly amateur programmers. It's alright. No malice intended. They're actually asking the community as to how they should proceed, and you should go tell them.

It's also a credit to Apple for finding out the mistake and shutting it down. Even though the line about having all apps be vetted through the store in the first place was to make sure all of them are safe, some stuff like this still slipped through because it's pretty much unfeasible to test each application to make sure they're not sending out your private data. Apps and app updates are already delayed for a week or more because Apple's checking them out.

Lets hope he didn't get to you first!!

Screenshots of what weatherbug was showing during the hurricane that hit Brownsville Texas.

FYI those are only Tropical storm wind speeds.

FYI if you don't know how I'm posting these screenshots on an unjailbroken phone I'll tell you. If you hold down the home button and hit the sleep button it will take a screenshot and store it in the camera roll. After that I use Mobile Foto used to be called Mobile Flickr (costs $3) and upload the photo to flickr. Unfortunately since the iPhone doesn't have copy and paste I can't post the pics until I get home unless I write down the web address on a piece of paper and I'm not doing that anymore!

Can't really help you, maybe check the apple support forums.

Local Picks app by travel advisor has soooo much potential, but it seems that whenever I click "reviews" it has a 50/50 rate of crashing. Hopefully they push out some updates and get it functioning properly.

damn I was just coming here to tell everyone about i. it looks pretty cool I may have to try it out.

iPhone Apps We Like: Dynolicious Car Performance Meter

Dynolicious is an all-purpose automotive performance meter, utilizing the built-in accelerometer in the iPhone and iPod touch to record your driving characteristics. BunsenTech, the makers of the software, claim that it can record 0-60 times within .08 of a second, accurately estimate your current speed and monitor and record any directional G force. The system seeks to perform nearly every function of (much) more expensive dedicated monitoring units, which seem like an awfully tall order for a $12.99 piece of cell phone software.

Fortunately, bloggers more experienced with the dedicated units have dispelled fears that this app is a waste of money. Dynolicious can actually do what it claims, and presents its data in a useful and attractive way. Realtime speedometer graphing and skidpad display may not be much more than pretty toys, but a bevy of data analysis tools can properly process your driving after it's done. Entering your car's weight and estimated power even allows Dynolicious to fulfill its namesake, calculating actual wheel horsepower and drivetrain efficiency with surprising accuracy. Data is recorded for as many vehicles as you want, and car mods can be noted and taken into account over a course of multiple tests.

Some reviewers are scoffing at the $12.99 price, and others are pointing to the cheaper g-tac, though it only records straight-line performance and doesn't offer nearly as complete of a feature set. Perspective is important though, and considering the high cost of roughly comparable dedicated systems and the amount of money avid car tuners spend on their rides, the price is a veritable bargain. This is one of the most creative uses of the iPhone's hardware I've seen that actually delivers.

^thats cool!

and to think, you have to pay over $70k for a GT-R. pssh

Alright this is starting to piss me off. Sometimes the apps work and sometimes they don't. Remote worked perfectly a week or two ago, and now it won't even start up.

I restarted the iPhone and now it works.... too bad it takes so long to restart the damn thing. I'm probably blowing this out of proportion but there are times that I really like my iPhone and defend it when other people make fun of it, and there are times I just wanna drop kick it like the steaming turd it is. Its almost like.... almost like owning an Acura!

I did the same thing.... I usually leave wi-fi off to save the battery, and I forgot. Turn on wi-fi, then try it again and turn on iTunes and it should work.

HOLY SHIT NETSHARE!!! It was briefly on the app store last night and then quickly removed and today it's back up. It's a program that allows you to tether your Mac to the iPhone and use cellular network to provide internet to your Mac. I told my dad about it and he gave me the $10 to download and try it out and it works. Setup isn't that hard and the instructions provide are OK but I see non techy people having troubles getting it up and running it could be a little more thorough. Anyways it works and now my dad is thinking about ditching his cell phone and wireless access card combo and getting an iPhone. He spends $90 a month cause he gets a great deal from T-mobile for 900 mins for $40 and then $50 for his wireless card from sprint. If he gets an iPhone cause of this program we can do the family share plan and that would save me some money. I think it's mac only IDK though. I'll try to get it running on Vista and report back.

Netshare iPhone tethering app reappears in the App Store

by Nilay Patel, posted Aug 1st 2008 at 2:54PM

Well, who knows what's going on here, but Nullriver's Netshare iPhone tethering app has made a reappearance for download by direct link only in the App Store, after getting unceremoniously yanked last night. It won't show up in searches, but you can still get it if you know the link -- that's a bit odd. Nullriver told Macrumors that it doesn't believe the SOCKS proxy violates any of the App Store SDK restrictions, and that while AT&T has tethering restrictions for its 3G network, other carriers around the world don't, making the app legit in its opinion. Looks like Apple's agreed -- for now. We did a quick hands-on video last night, check it out after the break.

OK I got it working in Vista. I was able to join the ad-hoc Network I created on the Mac with my PC. I could if I wanted to make a network on the PC but I saved myself a little time. You still need to setup the SOCKS proxy server which is under Control Panel > Internet Options > connections > LAN > Advanced. You'll also need to assign a manual IP address for Vista which is under IPv4 properties of your wireless NIC and a manual one for the iPhone itself for that network. Also believe it or not like engadget says even in Vista this setup only works when you use Safari as the browser. I wonder if it's got something to do with Mobile safari or some limitation of the iPhone SDK.

Official instructions for using Netshare with Vista:

It got it to work under Vista you have to create a network in Vista by

1. clicking the network icon in the taskbar and choose connect or disconnect.

2. click "setup a connection or network" and choose "setup a wireless ad-hoc network" name the network and add security if you want click the save network box and hit next then click close after network is created. Vista should automatically connected to this new network.

3.Open "Network and Sharing Center" and choose manage wireless networks and then click adapter properties.

4. Click Internet Protocol Version 4 and choose properties then choose "use the following IP address" and enter in 192.168.10.2 and make sure your subnet is 255.255.255.0, that's it leave everything else empty. Save your changes.

5. Open the Control Panel and choose internet options, chose the connections tab and select LAN. Then hit the advanced button under proxies. In the SOCKS field type in 192.168.10.1 (which will be the IP of your iPhone)and for port # choose 1080 and save your changes.

Your PC is now setup next setup the iPhone.

6. open setting and choose Wi-fi on the iPhone and it should see your newly created network enter password if you set one. Choose it and hit the blue arrow icon.

7. Choose static and in the IP address field enter 192.168.10.1 and make sure the subnet is 255.255.255.0. You may also want to disable auto-lock on the iPhone cause that will close out the program after a set amount of time.

8. Hit the Home button and open netshare.

9. Then for the bad part, open SAFARI (even on Vista it only works on SAFARI) and you can surf the net.

Well Apple removed the Netshare app from the app store again. I don't think it'll be coming back anytime soon.

My concern now is that if this is actually against At&T Terms if Apple will do something to remove it from all phones it's installed on and give the user their money back. I think it'd be wise to wait a little bit when the next iPhone or iTunes update comes out cause they may have something in there that will remove this program.

New app out today, Called Simplify Media, First 100k downloads are free.

It allows you to stream from up to 30 Itunes libraries over both WiFi and Cellular network. So far it seems pretty sweet.

Thanks!! I now have another way to "abuse" my unlimited data plan and devour my battery life!!! FYI when using this app make sure you quit the app before you put the phone to sleep. This app keeps using stays connected and using wi-fi/3g even if not playing music so eat will devour your battery like cookie monster eating cookies if you let it. My battery was almost full and I let the iPhone go to sleep and I came back to check on it a couple hours later and my battery had quickly dropped to about 25% even though I wasn't playing any music.

Cool App none the less, you better get it while it's free.

+1 for palringo

This is the app I use WAY more than any other. A friend and I constantly IM (gtalk) each other while we're at work and I use this palringo cause it supports gtalk. google only offers a web app for gtalk and the iPhone that is just garbage. Palringo is pretty good especially version 1.1, it fixed some of the bugs and added some new features and fixed UI annoyances. I can't wait for firmware 2.1 and the new Apple push service, IM will be so much better then.

Cool App none the less, you better get it while it's free.
Thanks for the battery life tip, I never put 2 and 2 together to figure out why sometimes my battery would randomly get murdered.

Check out the weather app too, it gives more info than the apple one.
Also remote for itunes works really well and is invaluable if you use an airport express.

Also Simplify Media is an Amazing app that allows you to share itunes libraries with friends, it works pretty well, I drove 400km on Sat and streamed tunes of my friends computer via this program it works soo good.
