Anybody have comcast & have trouble setting it up with vista?

My gf just got a big toshiba laptop w/ vista and for the life of me I cannot install windows mail to comply with comcast email... wtf I'll specify the exact problem when I get home. But I've gone through all the steps repeatedly and nothing works.

I've always just used the web interface for my Comcast mail so I have no direct experience. A couple of questions come to mind though:

A) Do you have a link to Comcast's mail setup page? I ask because several large ISP's actually don't support SSL logins for POP3.

B) Are you at home on your Comcast connection? They may not allow POP3 connections to their mail system from outside their network or they may require that you actually go set a preference somewhere to enable this.

1) I think comcast requires SSL
2) Use the full name@comcast.net to login
3) Verify the password by logging into the webmail

Yeah, I might as well try to convince her to use that.

But I did try to set up my gmail account on her vista mail just to check if it would work last night... and it was no good.

Hmm that is strange...

Can you uninstall Windows Mail and re-install it? By Windows Mail, do you mean Outlook? Or some other app. I'm not very familiar with Vista.

Another option is to install Mozilla Thunderbird which is another mail manager program similar to Outlook

Is this an e-mail address that she has been using for a long time and wants to keep? Because GMail has the capability of importing mail from another account via POP3, and it has the capability to send e-mail from an address other than the original GMail address. So, you can set up a GMail acct, set it up to access her Comcast e-mail, and she can even send out e-mails through GMail with the From address as her comcast acct.

It says login failed, meaning wrong user/pass or authentication method

Her account could also be locked out from too many wrong password attempts

Its her first personal laptop and its a new email, so it really isn't that important.

Anyways to answer your other question amgala, it is simply called "mail" just like "mail" on a mac, its the replacement/renamed version of outlook.

F comcast and/or any provider specific email address. If you cancel the service that account is gone. get a webmail address that'll never change no matter what the provider.

Gmail ftw like AMGala said.

First you should upgrade to Windows Live Mail (it's what I use) from download.live.com, which is superior to plain Windows Mail while you're at it upgrade to Windows Live Photo Gallery as well. To enable Gmail in Windows Live mail you have to enable the IMAP setting in gmail. So login into gmail then go to settings > forwarding and POP/IMAP > enable IMAP. Then open Windows Live Mail enter in your gmail address and password and it should do the rest. If you can try logging in to your comcast account via your browser and see if you can set it up to forward all it's mail to your gmail account.

FWIW Windows 7 doesn't even come with a mail program. You're required to go download this if you want one in the new OS.

Yes you can thank the EU and the threat of anti-trust lawsuits for that! there's no photo editing either. But the silver lining to this is that MS now isn't chained down to update it's consumer programs only when a new OS comes out. They're now on a different schedule and can release new updated programs much faster, and they'll work on all Windows OS except for just one.*

* Except for the new Windows Live Movie Maker it does not work on XP, Vista or newer is required.

^^That's much more likely to be the fault of new computer crapware than the OS.

Disable all important security features and the annoying pop-ups go away.
