Thats crazy ...Analog phones FTL !!!!

I have one of those crazy huge phones in the center console of my Merc!!!! The guys were looking at it the other day and shaking their heads... It is integrated into the radio of the car... pretty sweet hands-free for 1999... not so much for 2011...

 

Looks like the XDA guys got a hold of Gingerbread Sense. This means, you'll be seeing proper Gingerbread ports for the HD2, G2, Evo and probably a bunch more other devices in the next couple of days. Here's a vid on what's new in Sense 2.1:

Port as in meaning a fully running Gingerbread Sense complete with Widgets and everything. The Chinese HD2 has the same parts as the Evo and US HD2 and some similar parts with the G2 and other HTC phones.

 

I have a question. What makes CyanogenMod stand out between other ROMs? There are so many different ROMs for the Galaxy S, but I always see people go crazy over Cyanogen.

Also, what's so special about MIUI? I saw the video and it looks like another custom ROM?

 

Cyanogen's ROMS are based on AOSP. Meaning that they're as Vanilla as Vanilla Android gets with custom improvements that Cyanogen and his team come up with. It doesn't have the OEM custom skins like TouchWiz, MotoBlur, or Sense which is a plus to many people who hate that stuff (me included). CyanogenMod also comes with features you usually find in future Google updates because Google sometimes copies their code and modify them to be cleaner and applicable to more phones. In a sense, people running CyanogenMod now will already have features found in future builds like Honeycomb, etc. not exactly in the same manner but in some form of it. When I was running a Donut CM build back in the day, it already had features found in Eclair that when I updated to the official Eclair I was quite disappointed. Until Eclair CM came around again and so and so forth. Finally, the reason why everyone is excited about CM coming to their device is the fact that their lifeline of updates has just been extended by the community of devs without having to rely on the manufacturers to issue the updates.


MIUI is another custom skin and its supposed to be an iteration of Android that's quite similar to iOS. Its basically what TouchWiz should've been from the get go. Its made by Chinese devs and the amount of work they've put into it is amazing to make it look the way it does. It really doesn't even look like Android anymore. I'm looking forward to stable builds of either one so I have something to play with.

on the first page I think I see like 3 or 4 different ways to root. Whats the best way and is there advantages and disadvantages of either?

edit: also does this mess with autoupdates or anything? How does updating work with a rooted phone? For some reason I feel like I asked this question before but i forgot sorry haha

Search for other YouTube vids and sort it by upload date until you can follow the steps in either of the threads. The methods are all pretty similar. They just get to the root in a different way. For noobs, the one-clicks are the best but if a device is still pretty new, one-clicks are usually not an option. For advanced users, ADB rooting is the best and safest way because you actually get to see each command go through or not go through unlike the one-clicks.


You will NOT get Auto-updates after rooting. If you do, you will NOT want to install them. They can mess up your phone's state because of Root access. If you want to update to an official firmware in the future, you will have to Unroot. Unrooting is as easy as two command lines in some cases so its not very difficult.

 

I just saw video of the next version of HTC Sense for Gingerbread 2.3 on youtube. If you'll like to see it, I'll see if I can find.

 

Now that I'm I've had my EVO for 2 weeks I'm getting to that point. I used to flash my HTC Touch Pr0 2 all the time. I'm not going too crazy. Still staying with a guys Sprint Lover's Rom. Keeps stock look and amps but adds speed/response to the stock Sprint ROM.

I'm going to wait until he has the ROM on OS 2.3. But here is the interesting thing with HTC phones. Every time a new OS releases (which OS 2.4 is already around the corner). HTC must make Sense compatible with it. Now some may not like the Sense overlay on HTC phones but i LOVE it. It made for an easier transition to Android for me as i was used to Sense overlay on my Windows Phone. The newest Sense 2.0 for android is awesome. Works even deeper in Android operating system.

 

If you do end up rooting, I highly recommend CM7 and Netarchy's overclock kernel.

Im running 1.2.2 CFS and using SetCPU set to 800/1400. The phone flies and the battery life is very impressive.

I was running the Trinity kernel and it got me better benchmark scores, but the phone didnt feel as smooth. Not to mention that the browser wouldn't work 100% of the time.

I rooted my phone shortly after it came out, so Im only familiar with the original rooting method, and even that was a long time ago and I dont remember everything.

 

ahh damn, your phone gets reset, umm I know gmail has my backups for contacts and what not, what about apps? WIll it do those or should I get an app real quick that will do all that?

Any time you make changes to your phone like rooting, flashing a custom ROM or kernel, you will want to make a backup just in case anything goes wrong with your flash. Once you have a custom recovery like ClockWork Mod, you will be able to make an image of your current phone state using Nandroid and restore to that build as you wish. Personally, I haven't had the need for Nandroid since my Donut days because of apps like Titanium Backup Pro or My Backup. Plus the Nandroid images are usually around 650 MB - 1 GB big because I have so many apps on my phone. Use either of these apps:

Both have their pro versions. I really recommend Titanium Backup because it automates backing up and restoring apps, sms, mms, bookmarks, call logs, everything on the phone and their settings if you choose. The free version will prompt you per app but if you get the license, it will be all automatic. This is one app I think is well worth the money especially if you flash a lot of custom ROMs like I do. I haven't used My Backup in a while but I think its a little more user friendly (UI Interface) but not as powerful as Titanium Backup. Try both and see what you like. I suggest you use My Backup for now then switch to Titanium Backup when you have root.

Also one note, jumping from one OS build to a newer OS build, you shouldn't restore the data settings portion of the app because of incompatibilities. Its always best to start fresh with apps when jumping from say Froyo to Gingerbread. Its a hassle but at least you'll have a stable build with all your apps intact.

for you guys running windows 7 did you guys have to install that htc driver so your computer will sync with your phone?

Now I can skip most of the steps since I dont need the HTC sync software, I just download the 32-bit.zip file directly. Extract it and then it says to right click on the .INF file and install it. I right click on the file and this message comes up
"The INF File You selected does not support this method of installation"

I tried conitnuing without doing this but in my command prompt when i type in "adb devices" it doesnt show any attached and therefore no serial number. So I'm guessing I need this to work. But it wont work!! Kinda frustrating me

 

Sorry, I can't help you. I use my netbook for ADB which is XP.

 

so i think I got adb properly on my comp, but now in the command prompt I cant see my devices serial number. Once I get that I can continue, but thats where I'm having trouble.

 

Woot! got it rooted, but now I've run into another problem. I used the method you showed me cgfebtsx04, but now I'm getting a wifi error. Anyone experience this after rooting? How do I go about fixing this?

 

That's odd. Root shouldn't mess with your Wifi driver. Is the Wifi not turning on or is not connecting?

After a quick search it looks like a common problem with rooting the Nexus S. Kinda weird. Any way, looks like the solution is to flash a new ROM. You can use ROM manager from the market as long as you have Clockwork Recovery installed which I assume you do, now that you have root.

When I click to turn on wifi, a message comes underneath it, it says error. I saw something on the xda forums that fixed it, but i also unrooted it lol. But now that I have everything working, rooting will be easy for me. I'll look into this tomorrow, I've played enough today haha. Took me forever to get that adb crap running. I'll look into this tomorrow now. Thanks again haha

 

Sweet! I'm now rooted and as far as I can tell everything is working properly as of now

Oh and I found a tutorial on the xda forums that allows me to root without unlocking the bootloader so my memory never gets wiped when I flash Nexus s ftw

The latest host update messes up Words with Friends and Medscape. I edited the host file so both can work properly though.

Just drag the file into your "system/etc" folder and overwrite the hosts file in there.

Now I'm trying to create a backup before I put in a kernel and where I read your suppose to go to power off the phone, go into boot loader by pressing up volume and power, then into recovery, but when i go to recvoery i get the android dude with an exclamation mark there. So that way doesnt work. If I'm not mistaken I already got a file from one of the xda-developlers and put that file in my sd card already. So I think I should be fine with that for now, but that file is used to un-root the phone. How do I create a backup with my now rooted phone?

Anyway, I'm leaving a stock rom for now, maybe I'll get CM7 in the future. I'm happy with mine for now.

If your ADB is installed properly you can force it to reboot into recovery. Open up a command prompt and start up ADB. Type the following (Do NOT enter the $ and the #, they're what you'll see if you have root.) These commands can also be entered in Terminal Emulator from the market.

Also, when you enter su, you might get a prompt to allow super user access on your phone. Hit allow.

I believe, ROM Manager will also allow you to backup and reboot into recovery as well. Check that app out.

I've never had any major issues like that with my nexus s, only issue ive run into is the keyboard act up, but thats happened only 3-4 times. Never had a reboot where I didnt authorize it, never lost data and had to reboot or anything. Weird how so many people are having issues with the phone, guess I got lucky. DUnno how that works.

Also with this update coming how does it work with rooting. I know I have stock ROM, but I cant update my phone without it messing with my phone. So what happens when the update comes? Unroot, update and re-root?

 

hmm so I was gonna install the kernel, already put the zip file in my sd card. I went into fastboot mode again and clicked recovery and again the android dude with exclamation popped up. Tried going into clockworkmod recovery through the ROM manager and same thing happened.

So I'm guessing the way I rooted is for some reason not allowing me go into the clockworkmod recovery. Maybe I need to try a different way of rooting?

 

It sounds like A) you didn't flash Clockwork recovery, B) you didn't rename the original recovery so the phone stops accessing it. Here's your solution, just pick one:

Sounds like you dont have Clockworkmod on there.

Go into Rom Manager and click Flash ClockworkMod Recovery right at the top.
