Ya. Silly me went with the unlocked version of the HTC Dash since I was skeptical about touch screens. Times have certainly changed.

Nope, nothing on SD Card will get touched unless your repartition or format. Factory reset, wipe data, cache, dalvik don't touch SD Card. Like I said, backup your apps with Titanium Backup. Mount your phone to your computer and copy the Titanium Backup folder and your photos to your computer. Wipe, factory reset, the whole nine. Flash CM 7 RC1. Restore apps using Titanium Backup. Done.

Some ROMS will actually wipe and factory reset for you if you don't do it. Just copy your phone's internal memory to your computer by mounting it if you really want to be safe.

AFAIK, sd card shouldn't get wiped unless you specifically do it from your computer. Factory reset just restores the phone to the way it came out of the box new. Also, some things are flashed via the sd card so it wouldn't make much sense to wipe it when you are flashing roms. Need to confirm that with CG....

You will have to manually install Tibackup and then you can restore the rest of your apps. I think it's kind of funny that you need to root your phone before you can back up w/ ti backup.

EDIT: too slow

haha alright, I'll do that in a bit and post back up here once everything, hopefully, goes well

I downloaded CM7 RC1 from ROM manager and i'm looking at the "install rom from sd card" and where is it located? I dont see the zip file anywhere? Does it download it as a zip file? The only places I see things is under clockworkmod/download/ then i see .net .com stuff. How do i know which one is the cm7 rc1?

edit: wait nvm it probably leads me to it. I never installed it on my sd card so it wont be there. i just gotta click on the download and do the pre-intstallation stuff and all that, i think sooo nvm as of now

So Lookout Mobile Security came with a very cool app using a combination of the online market and your e-mail account if you lose your phone and never installed a phone locator app called "Plan B". App name aside, its a pretty awesome idea:

Presenting Lookout Labs and Plan B
By david

Today we are introducing a new concept called Lookout Labs and rolling out our first project: Plan B. Lookout Labs was created to explore and test out new ideas that push the boundaries of mobile. Projects developed in Lookout Labs are experimental by nature and are developed to showcase new concepts and facilitate an exchange between Lookout and the mobile community. Our engineers and other staff come up with new ideas every day, and we wanted a way to get the best ones implemented and released to the market quickly. They may only be available for a limited time, so make sure you check out our latest projects when they are first rolled out.

As part of Lookout Labs, today we are releasing our first project called Plan B. Plan B for Android is the last resort to find your missing phone. Plan B is the first and only ‘find my phone’ app that you can download AFTER you’ve already lost your phone to locate it.

We’ve all had a friend who has lost their phone, but didn’t have Lookout or another ‘find my phone app’ already on their phone. Plan B was created for them. Plan B is not a replacement for Lookout and is designed to be a one-time use app. It’s a backup plan for anyone who’s lost their phone and wants to get it back.

Using Plan B is simple, but requires access to the Android Market website (https://market.android.com/) and a Google account.

Follow these easy steps to use Plan B:

Go to the Android Market website and search “Plan B,” or visit the Plan B Android Market page.
Install Plan B to the phone that you are trying to find. (It’s important to note that you need to download Plan B from the web version of the Android Market, not the Android Market app market on your phone.)As soon as it is installed, Plan B will send an email to your Gmail account telling you it’s locating your phone.
Once Plan B has located your phone, check your Gmail again to find a link to a Google Map of where your phone is located. For 10 minutes Plan B will send you a series of consecutive emails with refined location updates every few minutes.
If your phone seems to be on the move, and you aren’t able to find your phone within ten minutes of downloading Plan B, you can text yourself the word “locate” from a friend’s phone in order to start the locate process again.
After you’ve found your lost phone, we recommend you download full protection from Lookout Mobile Security!
Since this is a beta project as part of Lookout Labs, it is only available in the U.S. on the four major carriers (AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile) and you must be on Android 2.0 and above.

Be a good friend. Help spread the word, and if you ever have a friend that has lost their phone, tell them about Plan B! Stay tuned for more innovative projects to come out of Lookout Labs.

Market Link to Plan B: https://market.android.com/details?i...out.labs.planb

Even their description seems similar to the other "Plan B". lol. Awesome app idea, nonetheless. I'm still using PhoneLocator Pro and if you have root access, it can turn on GPS even if its turned off and send call logs all without the person who stole your phone knowing.

I may have to set mine up that way soon so I don't have to worry about formatting or breaking my SD card if that happens.
I really think this is a great idea... one of the nice ideas that Palm had was the daily "cloud" updates ... it wasn't perfect but it was cool when my phone went out completely... that Pre was a adventure...

Just got the myTouch 4G right now. Currently charging the phone.

What apps/recommendations do you guys have? Keep in mind that this is a company phone, so no rooting allowed.

Check out appbrain.com or market.android.com for what's popular right now. You can still root it, just unroot when you give it back. (devil's advocate. lol.)

This is discouraging but not surprising coming from Motorola:

Motorola Orders an End to XOOM System Dump Distribution, What Happened to Developer Cooperation?

Just as quickly as a system dump of the Motorola XOOM’s software and media files came online, it was ordered down by Motorola’s legal department. Visiting the XDA thread distributing the files, where links to the system dump previously resided can now be found the text “Links removed due to receipt of a DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) infringement notice received from Motorola Information Protection Services.”

So what gives? After the news that the XOOM would feature an unlockable bootloader, it seemed Motorola was ready to be in the good graces of developers everywhere. Denying access to system files certainly makes you question Moto’s true intentions, but we can’t speak for why they requested the removal. It may have a lot more to do with this being the first official full release of Honeycomb than anything else. It could also be that the unlockable bootloader was instated to comply with Google Experience requests, and Moto never had any intention to make their device developer friendly. It’s all speculation for now.

Needless to say, Motorola doesn’t want the system dump floating around the internet. If you already have it, cherish it. If you don’t, well Moto would rather you go out and by the XOOM now that it is available.

Very fail of Motorola. Thats the final nail for me in regards to even thinking about the Xoom. Guess I'll look forward to LG G-Slate or Samsung's Galaxy Tab II which a lot of people were impressed at from MWC.

Samsung Captivate Froyo update is officially out today OTA or through mini Kies:

http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa/...8&AT_ID=368733

And again, here's the Vibrant 4G Froyo update. It will NOT be sent OTA like the Captivate's.

http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/Samsun...ow/td-p/678871

The Epic 4G update got pulled if you haven't updated yet. They're saying that people who didn't do a factory reset are getting crashes so they're fixing it.

Samsung Fascinate, nothing has been announced yet officially.

After you've backed up and copied everything from the phone to your computer just in case, do the factory reset using ROM Manager.

ROM Manager will reboot you into recovery automatically and do everything there: Factory reset, wipe data, dalvik, cache and flash the ROM. All of those options are in the Clockwork recovery if you were to do it yourself manually as well. It will not do any of the above while you are using the phone because the phone won't let some of those resources go if its being used so it doesn't crash. So yes it will get rid of ROM Manager but it doesn't matter cause it'll be flashing it through recovery any way.

I prefer doing it manually. ROM Manager just automates the whole update. If you want to do it manually, here's a quick how to:

1. Download the ROM of your choice to your SD Card. (And GAPPS for CM7)
2. Reboot into your phone's recovery.
3. Factory reset data
4. Wipe cache partition
5. Under Advanced Clockwork Settings --> Wipe Dalvik Cache
6. Install zip from SD Card --> Point to ROM you're going to flash
7. Install zip from SD Card --> Install GAPPS for CM7 ***Only need this for CM Roms***
8. Reboot

When you click it, you can select which apps to restore along with whether or not you want to restore the data. I would avoid restoring data for system apps when updating to a newer OS but you should be okay with the regular apps and games. But you can always try both and if it errors out, just delete the data from that app/game under Manage applications or in Titanium Backup.

When you do a backup, it should backup both the app + its data. Unfortunately, some app data do not restore properly. I know I had a few apps where I had to manually re-set my settings. Also, jumping from one OS version to another could be another reason why it doesn't take. You could try restoring the data of the app manually if you forgot to do it in the batch.

Go to the Backup/Restore tab. Scroll to your app/game. Click on it. Restore data. See if it restores your app/game data. If its not there, you may have to reboot once such as the case with text messages.

EDIT: Seems like you're getting it. lol. Titanium Backup takes a while to get used to but once you get the hang of it, it easily becomes the best app on Android especially when flashing a lot of custom ROMs.

How you liking CM7 by the way? They added a bunch of extra custom features in the settings menu if you haven't gone there yet. Should give them a try.

thanks a lot dude

haha I think I might try out another ROM also. Where can I find all the features of CM7 RC1? The home launcher is basically ADW launcher, lock screen is a ltl different(is that customizable now?) What else can I do other than adding themes?

Lots. Play around with the Cyanogenmod settings. ADW is the default launcher but that was done purposely. Changelog can be found in the following:

https://github.com/CyanogenMod/andro...CHANGELOG.mkdn

If I were you, I'd start learning how to flash kernels. Once you've found your ROM of choice, you start playing with kernels. They get flashed in the same way as ROMs except you don't wipe. That's really the only difference and just making sure they're compatible with your ROM.

sounds good, i had a netarchy kernel before i flashed this CM7

I'm looking at maybe switching to this ROM it has a more stock look which I prefer to ADW, has CM7 RC1 at its core, and comes with netarchy's kernel

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959282

looks good to me, I'll try out both and see what I prefer

Have you already tried clearing out the data on it? Sometimes that fixes the drain.

Homescreen --> Menu --> Settings --> Applications --> All tab --> Google Goggles --> Clear data

or at Titanium Backup --> Backup/Restore --> Google Goggles --> Wipe data

nope... but I will do that right now with Ti Bkup ...it was a pretty long wipe... so maybe that was it!

Thanks Mike!

using Ti Backup...should I run a back up of all my apps and system data until I have another ROM and I want to streamline things a bit?

Sometimes, the data gets corrupted when updating OSes so its best to clear it which solves a bunch of other problems.

Yeah. No downside to it other than it taking up space. But you'll always have that peace of mind just in case your phone dies. You don't need to backup all system apps, however, because those are usually not restorable to a new build without causing issues.

Just focus on backing up your regular apps, games. As far as system apps, I only really backup my [SMS/MMS/APN]Dialer Storage as that contains all my text messages. That's not included in the batch or probably is but I'm just too lazy to find it. Its much easier to scroll to it under Backup/Restore for me. lol.

So AndroidSpin did a great feature showcase of CM7. Since a lot of people were asking "What can you do with CM7 that you can't do on a regular Google build?" Well, here's your answer:

You probably didn't even know you could do all of that. Also note, this is not the final build so expect more features in the future.

nope, not mine

but other things drain my battery. Like my stock music player is pretty horrible with my battery. I got poweramp and that is much better. Although I will still force close it after I'm done using it for a while. Earlier on maps was my big issue, becuase i had the traffic layer checked it would always be getting data from it, took a while to find out but now i'm good!

ahh there we go

I'm missing a few of the programs that comes with CM7 like themechooser, but i saw somewhere on the xda forums that i can still get it somehow, so i'm gonna look that up. My only gripe about cm7 is adw launcher, i dunno right now i just prefer my stock home
