Android: Phone News and Discussion Thread
Oh yeah, I finally got around to playing with ADWLauncher EX on my Ion.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/adwlaunc...freak.launcher
I must say, I'm really impressed by it. Its running pretty fast on my Ion. With the old ADWLauncher and LauncherPro, swiping between pages wasn't smooth. With ADWLauncher EX, its very smooth and the custom transition effects are very nice too. Surprisingly, they don't lag even with my pages full of widgets like they used to.

Should be just like any home launcher unless you keep playing with the screen transitions like I do. lol. Oh, I also forgot to mention ADW Notifier is now free as well so you can use it with ADWLauncher EX and the regular ADWLauncher. It gives you a little circular dot with a number indicator for unread messages, etc. like the iPhone.

^Lol. Yeah the Motorola Atrix 4G is amazing. I'm really surprised ATT got dibs on it. I guess with the iPhone not being exclusive to them any more they decided to hop onto the Android bandwagon. Engadget has a vid of them playing some of the upcoming games on it along with the LG revolution:
<object width="437" height="288" id="viddler_4b10ea51"><param name="movie" value="http://www.viddler.com/player/4b10ea51/" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><embed src="http://www.viddler.com/player/4b10ea51/" width="437" height="288" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowScriptAccess="always" allowFullScreen="true" name="viddler_4b10ea51"></embed></object>
Guess its time to start saving up for that next Android phone. lol.

Finally got around to flashing CM7 Alpha. Its quick and lightweight. Only about 85mb after install.
If you have the opportunity to flash it, I recommend it. I havent had any FCs and so far everything works. I havent checked if Bluetooth works though as I dont use it.

Joined the Android fambam. My Tour was getting long in the tooth and I was looking for a viable replacement. I don't do anything crazy with my phones, mostly email for work, texting, web browsing and of course calls.
So I ordered a Droid Pro. It should be here Monday. I really got use to the functionality of a blackberry I hope the Pro doesn't disappoint.

For rooted users, check out AppWidgetPicker from XDA. It consolidates all of your widgets into one group. It only works on custom home launchers though like ADW or LauncherPro:

Download from XDA page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780828
I think the CM roms have it already installed by default. Just rename the file to "AppWigetPicker.apk" and push or copy the file to your "/system/app" folder.

This is my new bootanimation:

Got it from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=863063
I was using the Nexus boot animation for a while but got bored of it. lol. If your kernel or ROM supports custom boot animations then you can look for them all over XDA and push or copy the "bootanimation.zip" to your "data/local" or "system/media" folder. It doesn't overwrite the stock bootanimation so if you wanna revert, all you have to do is delete the file.

Question for the android folks. My buddy has an Evo 4 with sprint. He is on his 2nd one in 3 months and is going to get his 3rd tonight for the same problem. The phone starts heating up to some pretty impressive temperatures and the battery no longer holds a charge or even reads that it is charging. Basically if he unplugs it, it dies within seconds. Anyone else hear of this or have this issue?

Homescreen --> Menu --> Settings --> About --> Battery Use
It should tell you what app has been running since the last unplug. Don't plug it into a USB or charger or else it resets the stats. There's other apps in the market as well that can graph battery usage. Also, if he's leaving autosync, any messaging or video chat apps running in the background that could be whats causing it too especially if there's no signal so its constantly trying to ping the network but can't.

I found my way to battery use and strangely enough it said it was charging but in reality it wasn't and the little battery indicator on the home screen wasn't showing that it was charging. I shut the phone down and turned it on again and that seems to have corrected it but who knows if it's temporary.
Google Goggles just got updated. It now recognizes Ads from magazines and news papers and it can solve Sudoku puzzles.

Alright so my phone battery was dying unusually, and I was looking at the battery use, and 27% of it was android OS. It was even higher than my display at 21% which is usually my highest. Android OS is usually in the single digits. So something is obviously running in the background. But if I click on running apps, there is nothing out of the usual. And clues?

Hey man, this is off the phone subject, but did you visit the Cyberdyne booth and see the HAL system? Freakin exoskeleton that can increase your strength by 2 to 10 times... made me think of "Aliens" and The Terminator series films...

Playstation app was just released in Europe. You can grab it from XDA as usual. lol.

Just install like any other app and shouldn't need root. Haven't tried it yet because I don't own a PS3.

So had my Droid Pro for almost a full day. Big difference from the Blackberry I've been on for a few years. Not difficult to use, just a lot of functions. Still getting used to it.
I had a hell of a time connecting to the BT on the Infiniti. First it would pair, but not connect, then not recognized, pair, connect and then drop again. It was getting ridiculous. I unpaired, cleared the cache (which was empty), still no joy. I went to my car to get something for lunch and it connected automatically! lol, now I need to learn how to transfer my contacts to my car...........
Overall not a bad phone, but I guess I may not want the physical keyboard anymore as this touch screen is remarkably accurate more so then I thought it would be. It just makes the phone look a bit awkward...... Droid X perhaps???

Thanks for the quick review. I felt the same way about the onscreen keyboard. (As long as we're not talking about the stock Android one. lol.) With the newer and bigger screen phones, a physical keyboard isn't necessary except when driving and typing which I rarely do.
Bluetooth as a tech is pretty flaky. lol. My car doesn't have bluetooth integration but from my experience with my handsfree it works best when you don't touch the phone while it pairs.

Thanks for the heads up... sounds like you done been droided bro!!! So glad you're having a good experience thus far... just holler in here when you need a push in the right direction....
BT... just madness sometimes... each system is alil different... I have found that my EVO pairs best when device I am pairing it with has a pretty good charge... I do not have a in-car BT setup... my cars are both fairly old...LOL

With LTE you will be able to surf and do voice at the same time but you must be connected to LTE. That was a limitation of CDMA. You can also use Wifi to surf and talk at the same time so its not that big of a deal breaker if you're always connected to a hotspot like when you're at home. The real problem with Verizon's LTE right now is the limited areas that have it which is probably why Apple decided to stick with 3G right now.
Have you checked to see if the alarm volume toggle is not on silent? Download "AudioManager" from the market and you can change every little volume on the phone. I believe there's a way to do it in the menu settings but I'm not too familiar with Motorola's Blur UI.
Someone earlier had mentioned that the Gmail ap was only sending emails through when they forced a refresh. I'm having the same issue - whoever you were, did you find a solution? (Sorry, I can't remember how far back I read it, I've searched this thread a lot..)
I'm using a Droid X..any thoughts? I've set the battery management to maximize functionality and retrieve data constantly. I'm irritated.

Homescreen --> Menu ---> Settings --> Accounts and Sync. Make sure Auto-sync and Background data is checked.
This will drain battery though for as long as you have it checked.
If the autosync thing still doesn't fix it, you can try clearing the data for GMail and GMail storage.
Homescreen --> Menu --> Applications --> All --> Scroll to GMail and GMail Storage --> Hit clear data.
Let the phone resync your emails then make sure Autosync is still on and try it again.

Is your Autosync on? The icon with two arrows in a 360 fashion. Or you should be able to access it in your settings menu.

Homescreen-->Menu-->Settings--> [no Accounts and Sync option]
Instead I have HS-->Menu-->Settings-->Battery Mode-->Performance Mode (Device syncs without restriction. No battery savings) This is the mode selected
OR
....Settings-->Data Manager-->Data Delivery--Background Data is checked. Data enabled is also checked.
....Settings-->Accounts lists my separate accounts, including gmail, but doesn't give anything to be checked. If I select my gmail account, I get options to sync contacts, gmail, or calendar, but it's a one-time sync.
My friend who has an original droid & is very tech savvy checked all my settings and says it should be working, but it isn't. Grr.
