A co-worker of mine had an early iPhone X which did the same thing and the local Apple store said they couldn't fix it. I suggested she leave it on until the battery ran all of the way flat which ensured all of the electronics in the phone went quiescent; when she recharged the phone it booted up perfectly. Not saying this will work, but hey, worth a shot.

Drained battery already. Tried to charge this morning went right back to loop. I'll post after going into Verizon in a few hours.

Is your power button sticking? Mine was doing this a few weeks ago. I knew it was the power button because just before it started to boot loop, tapping the power button to wake up the screen would end up registering as a double click, opening the camera.

I put it in the fridge for a few hours until it killed the battery, then took it out and tossed it on the charger. Haven't had a problem since

No sticking here. And having to put my phone in the fridge is not something I feel I should need to do...lol

Truth. I should caveat that with this - I put it in the fridge because after 15 mins of boot looping, it began to heat up pretty badly. I figured the fridge would help counter that.

But apparently a sticking power button is an issue on the 3 and some of the 4s.

Sounds like what happened to my Pixel 1.

I still try to power it up every few months to revel in disappointment longer.

IMO, a Pixel 4a is in your future.

Have you tried to wait for it to completely drain the battery and then restarting?

A few months ago, my phone had severe performance issues, including experiencing boot loops for an extended time. Eventually, it cured itself.

On my Pixel 1, it started boot looping. First time it happened, I wasn't able to get it to be stable. Sometimes it'd work for a while and then loop, and other times it wouldn't stably boot at all. So I got the Pixel 2. Left the P1 for dead.

But then, quite a while later, after it had sad dead-dead for a while, I gave it a full charge and it booted stable for a few days. But then started crapping itself again. A few months back I tried again after letting it go dead-dead and it will start up but then freeze and boot. I did notice that the battery indication was all sorts of fucky. After charging it for a day or so, it would show a different battery level each time it booted, sometimes higher sometimes lower.

There's definitely something screwy going on. I almost think it's on the crest of LiOn battery failure into a flaming hulk.

Oh, my 4A arrived. Seems to be within a hair of the same size to the Pixel 2.

Haven't turned it on yet though, but initial impressions are just fine so far as size and feel (plastic) are concerned.

How does it feel compared to something like the 3xl or 4xl (if you can compare).

No clue. The XLs intimidate me.

Officemate had a 1XL (and maybe a 2XL) when I had the P1 and P2. I wasn't a fan because it's too big.

I had the 1G MotoX before the Pixel 1, and I actually liked that form factor. The Pixel 1/2/3/4A are the ones that are in my house currently, and they all fall within the same general footprint.

The metal/glass Pixels were never my favorite either because of how thin and slippery they are. I need a case to give it some grip. The 4A is "softer" and more like the rubberized MotoX (although the wood MotoX is closer to the Pixels as far as slip).

It's not really obvious to me that the Pixel 4A is plastic though... so that might be a plus for people that like the metal/glass. It's hard to describe... but it feels cheaper but not cheap.

The edges are noticeably rounder, like an ApplePhone, and less squared off like the Pixel 2.

Maybe it's both and it's going to be the larger form factor without the xl nomenclature?

Google Pixel 5 display
Specifically, the Pixel 5 could feature a 120Hz refresh rate, matching phones like the Galaxy S20 lineup. That rumor comes from Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants, who pegs the screen size at 6.67 inches. That would make the Pixel 5 the largest phone Google's ever made.4 hours ago

rumor; so take with grain of salt

Yeah that's a bit too large of a phone for me as well. I think the overall size of the 4xl is as large as I would want a phone.

been using android 11 beta...Most apps who have active devs will continue to update apps.
trying to diagnose my car and the Torque Pro app isnt playing nice with the beta. likely due to non-active devs. they got my $5 (or however much I paid for it) and abandoned development for now, it seems

I just ported over all my settings and played around with the 4A.

Not really loving the top to bottom bezel-less screen. It's gee-whiz neat, but it might be too big. I like being able to one-hand the phone and reach everywhere, and I can't quite get comfortable with it.

And this Android 11 I hate. Initially... hopefully I figure it out, but I miss the three buttons at the bottom. I can't figure out this buttonless bottom of the screen. So for the time being, I'm still on my old and busted phone while the new one grows on me.

EDIT: Yes, these are my first world problems.

I just signed up for the beta on my 3xl. I usually stay out until the 3rd release or so just so I can limit the amount of potential issues.

This.

Also:
https://www.theverge.com/2020/8/21/2...october-launch

Google launched the Pixel 4A in August but told us we’d have to wait to see the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4A 5G. They’re due to arrive sometime this fall (probably in early October), but new renders purportedly showing the Pixel 5 give us some idea what to expect.

The renders come from regular leaker @OnLeaks and Indian tech site PriceBaba. There are no real surprises here, with the images showing a fingerprint sensor on the rear; square-shaped camera array containing what looks to be two cameras, a flash, and an unknown sensor; and a hole-punch front-facing camera in the top left of the display.

It’s hard to judge the render’s authenticity, but the sand-blasted texture on the case looks the same as the side-on peek of the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4A 5G Google shared earlier this year.
There’s already some dispute about the Pixel 5’s screen, though. OnLeaks claims the Pixel 5 will have a screen size of between 5.7 and 5.8 inches, which would be the same, or perhaps smaller, than the 5.8-inch screen on the Pixel 4A. Meanwhile, Android Central says the Pixel 5 will be equipped with a 6-inch, 90Hz OLED panel, which makes a bit more sense — at 5.8 inches, the Pixel 5 will look a bit undersized compared to devices like Samsung’s S20 flagship with its 6.2-inch display.

A few other specs about the Pixel 5 have been rumored, but there’s nothing definite yet. Android Headlinessuggested the device might have a rather meager 3,080mAh battery, while Android Central claims that rumor is “entirely false” and the battery will actually be larger than the Pixel 4.

At least the rumors seem to agree on one thing: it may be powered by a Snapdragon 765G processor, which supports 5G but is a step down from the Snapdragon 855 used in the Pixel 4. We’ve also heard 8GB of RAM a few times now, and Android Central claims you’ll also get 128GB of storage, 15W Qi wirelss charging, and 5W reverse wireless charging (for your Bluetooth earbuds, perhaps) as well.

If you’re looking for more purported renders of the 5G, including a 360-degree video, you can head over to Pricebaba’s post. Otherwise, we’ll be on the lookout for more leaks between now and (probably) October.

LG's Wing 5G is the strangest dual-screen phone we've ever seen

September 14, 2020

LG has, throughout its long history, jumped onto some very unusual bandwagons. In 2011, it tried to cash in on an extremely short-lived 3D smartphone craze with the Optimus 3D/Thrill 4G. Perhaps inspired by Google's ultimately doomed Project Ara, it released one of the world's only modular smartphones -- the G5 -- in 2016. And now, with foldable screens on the rise and dual-display phones making a comeback, LG is trying to turn heads once more with the new Wing 5G.

It's about the strangest dual-screen phone we've seen yet, and with a (not yet firm) price of around $1,000, it’s also among the cheapest. Maybe more than anything, though, it’s proof that, yes, Weird LG is back.

Here's the idea: When the Wing is closed, it looks like any other big smartphone. Up front, there's a 6.8-inch P-OLED FullVision screen running at 2460x 1080, plus a 32-megapixel pop-up camera. Around back, there's what appears at first glance to be a fairly standard triple camera system: The 64-megapixel camera with an f/1.8 is the main attraction, and it's joined by an f/1.9 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera. The first hint that something unusual is afoot is the second, 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera. Exactly why that thing is here only really becomes apparent once you open the phone.

Rather than unfolding the Wing as you would with a Galaxy Z Fold 2 or a Surface Duo, you instead flick the main screen around so it sits in landscape orientation. Only then do you see the smaller, 3.9-inch screen beneath it -- this thing runs at 1,240 x 1,080, and is designed to pull double duty. You can use it to run Chrome, Twitter, or Instagram the same way you would on a regular smartphone, all while keeping a YouTube video or Google Maps directions visible on that big main screen.

Meanwhile, other specially tuned apps can take over both displays at once -- the Gallery app, for instance, can show pictures in finder detail on the big screen, leaving the smaller one available to show off editing controls or thumbnails of other photos you've taken. And when you're using LG's built-in messaging app, you can spin the whole thing around to see the message thread on the small screen while pecking out a response on the big one.

The Wing's strange, secondary ultra-wide camera might be the best example of this both-screens-at-once approach. Once the phone is open and you fire up the camera, the Wing can become an all-in-one camera/gimbal combo, complete with an on-screen joystick for tilt shots and planning. A cluster of stabilizers is built into the Wing to help smooth out your run-and-gun footage, though it's anyone's guess how well they'd compare to a proper, standalone gimbal. (A quick note: The 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor can only be used in gimbal mode since it's actually mounted in the Wing sideways.) And if using a phone like an Osmo doesn't exactly appeal, you can also use the secondary screen to the control the regular cameras, and even record video using the front-facing and rear cameras simultaneously.

While the Wing is about as unconventional a phone we've seen this year -- and that's really saying something -- the stuff powering it is considerably more pedestrian. The Wing uses one of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 765G chipsets, paired here with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. (Unlike, say, the Galaxy Z Fold 2, the Wing also supports microSD cards as large as 2TB.) As the name implies, this is a fully 5G device too, with support for both mmWave and sub-6 networks. Because of that expansive network support, the Wing will be compatible with all of the major US wireless carriers -- Verizon will carry it first this year, followed shortly by AT&T and T-Mobile.

There are just a few other things to note here: For one, despite its focus on media creation, the Wing doesn't have a headphone jack. LG says this was a decision made so it could squeeze in all the bits it needed for 5G and that movable display without making the phone too cumbersome to hold. Despite not having held the thing yet, LG seems to have done a solid job on that front -- the Wing is just about as thick as the LG Velvet. And speaking of that flick-open display mechanism, the company says the back of the main screen is coated in thermoplastic polyoxymethylene to keep it from scratching the small screen while in motion, and that the whole package has been tested to last for more than 200,000 swivels.

I cannot give this company enough credit for its sheer goddamned temerity, because the Wing is -- at first glance -- an absolutely ridiculous concept brought to life. Of course, "ridiculous" was sort of the whole point.

The Wing was developed as part of LG's Explorer project, an in-house initiative meant to help foster smartphone design innovation now that the industry is keen to move on from glass-and-metal slabs. While some old-school phone nerds (myself included) may see a resemblance between this thing and LG's mobile-TV-focused VX9400, the company says it designed the Wing as a response to what it learned about dual screens from devices like the V60 ThinQ. Turns out, people like the flexibility of having two screens, but not to the point where they'd necessarily want to carry a dual-screen case around or invest in a phone that's too different from what they're used to.

With that in mind, the Wing might actually be a great device. By design, it offers a proper, standard smartphone experience, plus some extra flexibility when you really need it. There are, of course, lingering questions about app support and overall ease of use, but we'll hopefully answer those questions once we get to test one.

Maybe the most important thing about the Explorer initiative is that it won't live or die based on the Wing's sales. LG says it will remain committed to the project even if the Wing winds up being a total market dud, which -- let's face it -- is a distinct possibility. Perhaps the Wing will languish on store shelves; perhaps people will buy it in droves. No one can say for sure right now, but if LG really does stick to its word and pushes the industry in new and interesting directions, well, that's a win for all of us.

so.... I've been meaning to post this for a long time, and kept forgetting.... mainly because I don't drive my car as much these days... but anyway, I picked up the Note 10 Plus back in Nov and have been loving it... My car has Bluetooth but only for calls, it does NOT connect for music via Bluetooth. I have to use a USB-C to USB cable (phone to car) for that. Here's what annoys the F out of me... when I get in my car, before I connect the phone to the car via cable... if I start my car, the phone connects with the car (via BT) and starts playing music automatically... I DO NOT WANT THIS FEATURE! I can't seem to find a way to disable this.. Anyone know a way to disable this function? My previous phone, which was the S10 Plus, would connect automatically as well... but it didn't automatically start playing music like that.

My car has Bluetooth but only for calls, it does NOT connect for music via Bluetooth. I have to use a USB-C to USB cable (phone to car) for that. Yeah, phone connection to car audio and etc. has always been spotty. I really am unsure how to disable the music from starting automatically...Only thing I can think of is do you have the music app running before you climb into your car? So, make sure the app is closed.

What app are you using to stream/play music?

No posts about this?

Google is planning to launch its Pixel 5 smartphone, a new Chromecast, and a new smart speaker later this month. Google has started inviting members of the media to a special event on September 30th, promising new hardware. “We invite you to learn all about our new Chromecast, our latest smart speaker, and our new Pixel phones,” reads the invite.

Google already confirmed its plans to launch a Pixel 5 later this year, complete with 5G connectivity. The Pixel maker revealed its launch plans alongside the introduction of the Pixel 4A last month, promising 5G versions of the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4A in the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Japan, Taiwan, and Australia.
Google’s event invite.A new Chromecast is on the way, too, and an update to Google’s smart speakers. That will likely be the Nest smart speaker that Google confirmed back in July after an image of the speaker leaked online. The speaker looks like it’ll be something between the Nest Mini and the larger Google Home Max, with the ability to stand vertically.

Two new mysterious Google hardware devices appeared at the FCC last month, looking like they’re related to a new Android TV product that Google has reportedly been preparing for a while. Google is rumored to be working on a TV dongle codenamed “Sabrina” that would use Android TV and a traditional remote-driven UI. Chromecast devices are typically driven by smartphones, and Google’s invite specifically mentions Chromecast so it’s not clear if these two devices will appear later this month.

Anyone planning on going to the Pixel 5 when it comes out? I'm probably going to do it.
