Black Friday deal for Fi users: the 4a 5G is down to $349. That's really tempting for me...

New Fi users can get it for $299.

That's definitely worth it over a 5 at that price...

Is there a commitment involved?

It looks like new customers need to stay on Fi for two months: https://fi.google.com/about/promo-te...-4a-5g-new-200

Hmmm. Might get the Pixel 5. My phone's battery is dying this week again. Every few weeks it drains like crazy, which makes me want to replace it, then it cures itself. Staying home 100% of the time I can just keep it plugged in all day, so not a big deal right now.

Based on past years, I think we might get a bigger discount than $50 offered for Black Friday if I wait a few months. Although I think previous years they released it earlier in the year, so might have to wait longer for a bigger discount?

Should I wait a few more months?

This is annoying; I'm looking at trading in my 3XL for either the 5 or the 4a 5G, but the trade in values are different depending on the phone I'm purchasing.

Trading for the 5:

Trading for the 4a 5G:

Strangely, if I go through Fi to trade in my 3xl on a 4a 5g, they give me the $128 offer.

Surely, Pixel 3 XL can still fetch several hundred dollars. They're selling you on convenience

Of course they are. They still need to make money on the back end hence the lower price.

They are definitely trying to move more 4a 5G models though.

I have Android 11 on my 3XL and still get two to three days per charge; that said, my bank doesn't yet allow for mobile deposit from Android 11 phones so it is annoying to need to drive to the bank every time I want to do a deposit.

Edit: And as soon as I wrote the above about mobile deposit, I got a check in the mail I needed to deposit. My banking app was updated and now it allows deposits! Yay!

I get good battery life on my 4a most of the time, but then it'll randomly hemorrhage charge for a day or two. Nothing really different in usage either. It's weird. But then it starts working fine again and it's all good.

Battery life on the P5 is excellent. Took it off the charger at 7:30 this morning and it still says 100% two hours later

Granted I haven't used it much but none of my old phones did this.

That's one of the reasons I haven't pulled the trigger on the 5 yet - my 3xl is still chugging along just fine. I'm at 89% battery, off charger for 5 hours. Granted, I've only had the screen on for about 30 minutes, but I can easily get through a day on a single charge.

Agreed, I mean, with the exception of not having 5g, what's not to like about the 3XL?

Wife got me the Pixel 5 for Christmas.

Such a great phone.

She also got my daughter the iPhone 12 Mini for Christmas, so we had fun today comparing the two.

I am out of touch with the sale cycle of Android phones.

Looking to buy a Pixel 5 (to replace a Pixel 2) but wondering if prices are likely to drop anytime soon from $699 unlocked?

They will definitely drop. The question is when and how long you're willing to wait.

Android Auto question: Anyone have issues with the phone responding to you when driving when you say, "Hey, Google"...?

When I do this, the phone (via the car) tells me to tap the notification on my phone and only then, will it accept my question/command. Have to do it for each "Hey, Google" instance. Completely takes away the purpose of hands-free.

Did some reading online and fixed it by removing the car from my phone's settings and re-adding it while plugged into the USB in the vehicle.

I just got a 2017 Audi and it asks if I want to set up Android Auto when I charge my phone. I keep rejecting because I want to first. I assume that it will work via bluetooth after the setup correct? The bluetooth audio already works regardless though. Another issue is that sometimes the music doesn't connect to the bluetooth but it will show playing on the car radio. I have to disconnect the music output from the car to the phone and back to get it to work. Does Android Auto fix this?

Yeah, I think your issues will be resolved with Android Auto.

The setup should be pretty straight-forward if you've never plugged your phone into the car yet. Just attach it via USB, add the vehicle, and go through the prompts.

If you don't want to tether for AA then get a normal 12V USB charger and put it in the charger outlet. I believe the built in port is for both data and power so you'll always have this unless you go to AA. I'm not sure if there's a way to disable AA though...maybe there is though I've never tried it.

Considering my first Samsung Android phone in the S21 Ultra whenever we start eventually seeing some discounts on them. It seems like with the camera tech it might be the equal of an iPhone12 Pro Max running Android.

Still no real dip in price (BB has a $50 dollar off deal, big woop)...

I figured once the Pixel6 rumors starting floating the price would drop $100. No such luck.

I am getting close to desperate. The USB-C charging port on my Pixel2 is starting to fail, despite blowing it out, etc.

I bit the bullet and ordered the P5 two weeks ago. It was scheduled to ship on the 18th but then changed to pending. Now it's June 18th, and the sage color is showing out of stock for Fi. I'm guessing the chip shortages are impacting phones as well, which is keeping prices up.

Hopefully chip prices start dropping; my 3XL has been mostly rock solid since I got it a couple of years ago, but recently the fingerprint reader has been decidedly hit-and-miss. What with my new job being even more phone centric than the old one, I'll be looking to upgrade later this year or early next. I'm inclined to stick with Pixel phones, but only if they revert back to phones which are upper tier; I don't need leading/bleeding edge stuff, but "near leading edge" will definitely be nice.

I think the P5 is near leading edge based on user experience, but specs don't indicate that.

It would have been nice if it had a newer processor and maybe a slightly more powerful camera though. But then they'd have a $900 phone instead of a $700 phone.

Did you *really* dig deep in there like it's a bellybutton? Like, way more than you think is reasonable?

My fingerprint sensor is pretty temperamental. I've noticed lately that if my hands are a little bit damp (which, being in the friggin' swamp is basically all the time), and there is the slightest bit of built up oil and grime on the sensor, then it just refuses to work. A quick wipe of the sensor and finger will get it working right again 90% of the time. But then, about 10% of the time, It needs a full reboot for some reason.

I'm certainly okay with a $900 phone, if it is semi competitive with with a high end Samsung, I'm good with that.

I just picked up a OnePlus 9.. decided not to get the Pro because the difference is really not worth the $300 difference between Pro and Non-Pro.

My Note just died.. wont charge, wont turn on... wont do shit. My previous Note had similar issues.

have been a loyal Samsung user... decided to try something else.

So far... Wow.. Great phone!

Now that you mention it, I am due for my semi-annual belly button cleaning...

I just grabbed a magnifying glass and a bright light, and there might actually be some impacted dust in there. I need a really fine needle to get in there and scrape... Thanks for reminding me to clean out my holes!

I've had the Pixel 5 since Christmas, and I'm more than satisfied. The camera is brilliant, and I've not had a single issue. To be honest, if they had the latest and greatest Snapdragon, I doubt that I would have noticed any difference in performance.

Do you not use Android Auto? I've never seen this when I connect my phone to my car. Although I always use the Android Auto interface with the car's screen.

I'll be looking to swap out my Pixel 3 XL early next year, based upon the current reviews and other speculation out there, the top two on my short list are the OnePlus 9 Pro and the still vaporware Pixel 6 Pro. Time will of course tell whether either of these two end up in my pocket, or if I opt for something else entirely.

no, my car is too old to have Android Auto, it only has an AUX port, but it has Bluetooth for calls only.
