That's a victory for Google TBH. I'm sure they'll market the hell out of that since Apple prides itself on its camera quality given their marketing campaign of blown up billboards taken with iPhone cameras.

Its a decent phone. I still not sold till I see what the camera can truely do. Do like the fact you can now finance it through Google. As I expected I am more excited about Google Home and Google Wifi than the Pixel.

Pixel XL, Note7, or LG V20. What to pick next. 4gb of Ram is nice though on the Pixel.

Google Now has been around for a while now. Google Assistant just makes it able to do even more.

I prefer detachable battery and SD slot so V20. Note 7 I don't trust, not only because of fire, but because of TouchWiz and slow OS updates screwing up the phone. If Pixel had gone 256 for a $100 more that'd make more sense. Apple really upped the ante in storage.

128gb is a lot of storage. I am using my 64gb Pixel and have a couple movies on it and still have 10gb free. I need to remove some longer concert videos from my phone as well. I have over a year of pictures and videos on the phone and have not filled it up yet.

It appears you can't get the blue one in 128gb which is a bummer cause that I the color I would probably have gotten.

Unfortunately, it will only be offered through Google Store, Bestbuy and Verizon.

The color names are funny and I kind of like the really blue which is already sold out and not available for 128GB. I agree with Miz....the bezels are redonk.

Just looking at it, I like the form factor of my 6P better. The pixel xl seems too round. Will watch a comparison vid.

Looks so much like an iphone though. And that price... The specs don't seem to be that much of an upgrade from the 6P to justify the price

I was really hoping to see some wireless charging with the new phone. I have the nexus 6 and never plug the thing in.. Wife had the nexus 4 when it first came out. Just upgraded her to the 5x a few months ago(only because she didn't have LTE). She hates having to plug it in.. Sure it charges super fast, but get someone used to wireless charging and its kind of expected from that point on... I'll pass on this round, maybe next year or two when its half the cost... And, ya very IPhone-ish...

It really does resemble an iPhone, even down to the bezels

They just moved the home button/fingerprint scanner to the back.

Your probably right. It will make me wait a while now so I have time to figure out what color lol.

The 6P is definitely very capable still no doubt. I love my 6P and really have no reason to replace it. I have been buying phones outright for so long that the thought of being able to pay the same price I normally pay for a phone outright but over 24 months to Google instead of Verizon is half of what made me decide I would get another new device. I could buy it outright of course but why do that when I could pay 36.21 a month. Plus the unlimited full size storage is a nice touch. I don't let my devices upload anything but full quality as it is now. It would also get help me complete my goal of having all USB-C devices so I can stop taking two charger typers with when I travel. Yes I know such a horrible problem to deal with.

This gen of high end phones and how good the mid grade ones for a percentage of the price are hopefully drives down the cost of high end phones but I have a feeling the midgrades will just charge more next year

Smoking, popping Samsung Galaxy Note 7 prompts Southwest evacuation

Smoking, popping Samsung Galaxy Note 7 prompts Southwest evacuation

October 5, 2016

A Samsung Galaxy Note 7, the kind of cellphone that has been recalled for overheating batteries, began popping and smoking Wednesday morning aboard a Southwest Airlines, sparking the evacuation of the flight while still on the ground at Louisville.

The incident brings more damage to Samsung’s reputation and calls into question the very future of the Note 7 itself, a phone that was highly regarded when it first hit the market in late August, before reports began to surface about batteries that caught fire.

Making matters worse, the device was apparently one of the replacement handsets that the South Korean company had previously deemed “safe.” Now it appears that the issue is far from settled.

The Southwest incident happened about 9:15 a.m. as Flight 994 to Baltimore was boarding. Arson investigators confirmed that a Samsung phone overheated, leading to smoke in the cabin, according to WHAS-TV reporter Rachel Platt.

Nobody was injured, but the incident caused enough smoke to force evacuation of the plane and the flight was canceled.

Sarah Green of New Albany told The Courier-Journal of Louisville that her husband, Brian, was waiting to take off to Baltimore when his Galaxy Note 7 overheated. He called her from another person's phone a little after 9 a.m. to tell her what happened.

"He said he had just powered it down, when it made a popping noise and started smoking," Sarah Green said. "He took it out of his pocket and threw it on the ground."

Green said her husband's phone was a replacement Galaxy Note 7 after Samsung recalled the phone in mid-September because of "serious fire and burn hazards." They took the phone in about two weeks to a local AT&T Store to have it replaced.

Samsung expressed skepticism the incident involved a new Note 7.

“Until we are able to retrieve the device, we cannot confirm that this incident involves the new Note 7," the company said in a statement. "We are working with the authorities and Southwest now to recover the device and confirm the cause. Once we have examined the device we will have more information to share."

An airport spokeswoman, Natalie Ciresi-Chaudoin, said 75 people aboard the Boeing 737 evacuated without incident

Southwest Airlines said in a statement that a customer reported smoke emitting from an electronic device, but that passengers were able to evacuate calmly through the main cabin door because the plane hadn't left the gate.

The whole thinner phone bullshit is partially to blame for all this. If there weren't so much pressure to squeeze everything in a thinner body, they wouldn't have to squish all the battery components in such a cramped space.

its not just that, I read about how Samsung cut corners to try and get their note 7 out before the iPhone. Could be one contributing factor

Was going to post about this too. And of course Samsung says it's not related to the new note7.

The article I read said that 60% of the recalled devices have been exchanged in SK and US. Still 40% more time bombs out there

I fly twice a week and my airline explicitly makes an announcement prior to pushback that if you have a Note 7 to turn it off, put it away and don't turn it back on until we're back on the ground.

The safe replacement Note7, was turned off when requested, then started to bake and catch things on fire.

Haha... But really though. I don't care if my phone is 1.278476 mm narrower than last year's model. I'd rather have better functionality than form.

Most people don't care about slim form factor. Otherwise otter box cases wouldn't be as popular as they are.

Actually if i remember the specs correctly, the Note 7 is actually thicker than the previous S6 Edge+, which technically is the previous gen of the note 7 based on looks and specs.
if edge 6+ did not explode, Note 7 should not. There is no excuse for Samsung, they just fucked up. big time.

Asus ZenFone 3 Special Edition?

https://www.engadget.com/2016/10/06/...ve-this-month/

If you want the fastest Android phone in the US, you can pre-order Google's Pixel phone starting at $649, and get it around October 20th. There is another option, though -- ASUS will release its 5.7-inch Deluxe Special Edition ZenFone 3 smartphone with the same Snapdragon 821 processor in the US for $799 by the end of the month. Both have metal unibodies, but the ASUS is the flashier of the two.

For many, the ability to get Android updates first on Google's Pixel devices or use the Daydream headset will be a deciding factor. But the ZenFone 3 does have a few things going for it -- it has 6GB of RAM instead of 4GB, 256GB of (expandable) UFS II storage (instead of 128GB max on the Pixel) and is the first device with Sony's new Exmore IMX318 23-megapixel rear camera sensor. Both have 1080p screens, but the 5.5-inch Pixel XL sports a Quad HD display and significantly higher $869 price tag.

If both of those options are too rich, ASUS has tamer variants of the ZenFone 3, including the Deluxe 5.7-inch 4GB model with a mere Snapdragon 820 for a very decent $499. The 5.5-inch Deluxe sports a mid-range Snapdragon 625 CPU, 4GB of RAM and a $399 price tag.

Since we're all having flashbacks of our first phones, mine was the Nokia 5190 on Pacific Bell Wireless which became Cingular Wireless and is now AT&T Wireless. The removable color face plates were such the rage back then. First phone with snake too. Innovation!

I really need to replace this POS LG G4 that I have. Battery life is atrocious, tap to wake works when it wants to (usually never), certain apps just do not work (hulu being one of them). I wanted to get a Note 7, however, there is that little level of uncertainty. I am on AT&T so the google phone is out. I really don't want another LG so that puts the V20 out, The Galaxy 7's are halfway through their cycle so I really don't want to pick up a phone in the middle of the cycle. iPhone is out, because iPhone.

I kind of feel like just rolling the dice on the N7. I hope that the plane incident is an isolated one and done by user error and not because of the phone itself.

does AT&T still subsidize handsets?
maybe why he wants to stick with his plan?

you're right tho, google has the financing option now, something like 40 bucks a month
