Android: Phone News and Discussion Thread
Well I guess I can write up my review on the Nexus now after having had it for the past few days. Now you have to remember I’m running a custom ROM (Modaco’s rI5) and kernel which isn’t too far off from stock as the phone is still brand new and not that many ROMs veer too far off from stock until a little later. So where to start?
If you guys read my first impressions on it, they’re pretty much the same. The feel of the phone is awesome. The balance feels great and the plasticness of the phone isn’t so obvious with the metal trim Samsung used. What’s weird is that with one hand use, I feel like the Galaxy Nexus is very well done compared to my Galaxy S which is smaller. Using the Galaxy S with one hand feels awkward but on the Nexus its perfect. I think it may be due to the curve body but I can’t say for sure. Since I used ICS on the alpha builds on the Galaxy S, not too many things surprised me on the Nexus in terms of features. All the ooh and aahs were already spent on the alpha builds which pretty much had the majority of things already working. With that said, I was very surprised at how snappy the CPU was on the Nexus compared to my Galaxy S. This is what I was worried the most about as I was thinking the Nexus should’ve gone with the Exynos processor instead of the TI OMAP. However, after having used the phone, I can say those worries are gone. I even went back to TouchWiz for a week which is hardware accelerated to get a feel of the Galaxy S full potential hardware wise just to see if it was the ICS alpha that was slow or if my phone was just getting old. Unfortunately, the Galaxy S is getting old, mainly due to the RAM, but it is still very capable with the right custom ROM (CM9?).
The camera is very fast. I haven’t really used it much except to play around with the no lag shutter. I really love the feature. You can just keep tapping it and it’ll keep taking pictures over and over. However, it’ll even take pictures before its done focusing. This might be an inconvenience for some but I don’t think it’s a problem especially if you can take 5 pictures at the same time it takes to take 1 in other phones. Quality is good enough for a phone. It does have that yellow tint which is very obvious in night pictures but nothing too crazy. (People will be instagramming them with filters any way. Lol.) The flash is crazy bright and I almost blinded myself trying to look straight into it. So don’t do it to save your eyesight. Haha. I was a little disappointed to find out that the funny faces/manipulation only works in video recording. Not that I’d use it all the time but I thought that feature would be in regular camera mode.
ICS is fast. I haven’t seen the stutter that reviewers were seeing, like clicking on Recent apps button, etc. It may be due to the fact that I’m using a custom ROM which optimizes a few things and I’m not sure if that’s included. When you first sign in to ICS, it’ll automatically install all your apps and settings from your other phone. I know that feature isn’t new but it was the first time I had gotten it to work on any of my phones and I think its pretty cool. Lol. Again, during this time as it was installing all of my apps in the background I didn’t get any slowdowns which is why the feature surprised me a bit because I didn’t know it was happening until I saw all the apps in my notification bar. The memory management is vastly improved in ICS which probably helps minimize and lags. The rotation animation is a little on the slow side on the stock ROM but with Modaco’s ROM, he sped it up to the point that its just perfect and I’m hoping other ROMs will incorporate this. Like I said in my previous posts, apps need to be optimized to make use of the ICS features. You can sorta tell which ones aren’t optimized because they’re not as fluid. However, its not something to make a big fuss over. Also I love the flicking away notifications and other things in ICS. Lol.
The screen is beautiful. It makes the iPhone look like a toy when you place it right next to it (And man is iOS 5 getting stale. Especially after using ICS. I can’t for the life of me find the beauty in it as its so simple that its boring. Sorry, side rant. Save for another time. Lol.) The AMOLED colors are what you expect with blacks being black and colors popping, etc. Despite it being Pentile, I haven’t been able to discern each pixel as people were concerned about. On videos, its just awesome especially when the whole screen gets taken up as in YouTube vids. Buttons don’t disappear all the time but they do dim so you don’t even notice them. The screen is a tad bit dimmer than other phones at the same settings. I think Samsung did this to save battery life but I always felt my Galaxy S was too bright especially at night that I have to use the Screen Filter app to dim the screen so the Nexus is alright in that regards. Haven’t had much extended use outside in the bright light but it should be fine.
GPS works awesome. Something that the Galaxy S failed on. I did have some issues trying to get a lock in the Google Navigation at one point but it may have been a fluke as after I got a lock in Google Maps, it worked every time since and it was spot on. Had a good test of it last night because of LA traffic trying to reroute on the side streets after finding out the freeway I was using was closed.
The browser is really fast. I enjoy using it to browse websites and it doesn’t suffer from the checkboarding that the Honeycomb tablets were seeing in early builds. They also brought the Labs found in Honeycomb which allow you to swipe from the side of the screen to access the Tabs, URL bar and settings. It takes some time to get used to especially those who haven’t used Honeycomb but I love it. Haven’t really used Face Unlock but it works and its fast.
Music was the other thing that had me worried as the Galaxy S II used a crappy DAC and the Nexus uses something different from both the S II and Galaxy S. (I forget what its using but Supercurio said it was capable as the Galaxy S.) I have to say its pretty much on par with the Galaxy S in terms of quality. After using Voodoo sound on the Galaxy S, you get kinda spoiled when listening to music on other devices. Google Music does have a built in Equalizer now and also has Lockscreen Widget control. Music control also now shows up in the notification bar so anywhere you have access to the notification bar, you have access to the music controls. I did miss the power widget controls seen in TouchWiz and CM7 but that’s easily fixed with Widgetsoid which I recommend you guys get to have the widgets in your notification bar.

Lastly, call quality is pretty good. I really didn’t have much issues with my Galaxy S in this regards so I can’t really say much other than that. I did get a hold of the KL1 baseband but I got a hold of it too late so I can’t say if it improved data speeds like everyone was saying at XDA. Also, I’m still using the incorrect data plan so my speeds shouldn’t be trusted. They are pretty similar to my Galaxy S though but that may be due to AT&T capping my speeds. I did notice that my WiFi signal got a little better though with the KL1 baseband. I also noticed that I do get a little better reception in certain areas compared to my Galaxy S and I’ve been able to hold a phone call in areas I normally drop calls in. Battery life is decent. It doesn't seem to be as good as my Galaxy S but it may need a few more cycles. I hear the new baseband helps in that regard as well. Can't say for sure yet.
Well this was a long one. Lol. I think I covered pretty much everything I wanted covered. In short, I love the phone and I think this one will last me over a year well maybe until we get Quadcores and double the pixels. Lol.
Good:
- Love the phone and its worth every penny I bought it for
- It feels good in the hand and doesn’t feel like a plastic slab
- Weight balance is very nice
- Its not as big as I thought it would be as its easily usable with one hand
- Its fast even though its using an OMAP instead of Exynos
- Reception seems to be better than my Galaxy S
- Love the no lag shutter
- ICS is awesome and I wish manufacturers would stop with their skins (highly unlikely to happen any time soon)
Bad:
- Screen is a little dimmer than others. May be an issue for people who use their phones out in the sun all the time.
- Waiting for a good portion of apps to be optimized for ICS (they still function, but fluidity isn’t as good)
- Camera will take a shot even if its out of focus
- Phone may be too large for some people
- I'm not a big fan of MTP but it works. I prefer USB mass storage which is supposedly coming the near future.

To tell you the truth, I just eyeballed it. I didn't really spend much time trying to make it match. lol. It does have the usual hex code color interface if you want to go that route which I should probably do as well to make it match more properly.
I think the best thing to do is to hold off until you get ICS. See how performance is with that. I do think that 1 GB of RAM is a plus especially with the way Android handles RAM but depending on your use you may not even need all of that. All I know is that ICS is significantly faster than my Galaxy S which has the same processor as the Nexus S. Restoring apps from Titanium Backup was very quick on the Galaxy Nexus.
Thats the plan. I also want to wait until most of the apps I use are optimized for ICS.
I had the Alpha 13 build of ICS on my phone for about a day. It looks great, I love the browser and the music control from the notification bar, but it wasn't ready to be my daily rom. ICS is miles ahead of GB. Im still amazed at the jump between the two (I really didn't play with HC much and since thats tablets only....

Adobe flash is out in the market for ICS! Just in time.
Was missing it for a while.

Flash playback is awesome so far! It seems to be hardware accelerated finally!

Modaco's Ir6 is also out with Facebook Sync fixed:

Not sure if it works for LTE. Might want to read the thread. Also if you guys are planning to install Google Wallet, I suggest you do it before installing all your apps. You're gonna need to wipe in order to prevent the force closes.

Good to know a out google wallet. I will be sure to install it first when my replacement shows up tomorrow.
Gonna have to check the facebook sync out for sure cause I want a program that lets me connect contacta together even if the names arent exactly the same. I really only want it to pull birthdays and pics.

Hey CG, what tablet do you have?
Im thinking about starting a little project involving an Android tablet. The overall width can't be more then ~8". The Kindle Fire looked real good but I need expandable memory. Im really eyeing the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. The 7.7 is nice but also $200 more expensive.

So I guess hold off on the Modaco ROM for Verizon users:
https://twitter.com/#!/PaulOBrien/st...99878346907648
There are already some other ROM/kernels for Verizon in XDA though if you still want to run a custom ROM/kernel.
For those asking, MCR and my various UI patches will be updated for the LTE Galaxy Nexus next week!

For birthdays and events, why not sync them into your Google Calendar? You can export the birthday and events as a url calendar which you can then link to Google Calendar. It'll always be updated when you add/remove friends and events. The only downside I've seen of doing this is that the times are usually stuck in Pacific time so if you travel a lot or don't live in the Pacific time, it becomes a mess.

My wife used her NE2 upgrade to get the Galaxy Nexus...to give to me! She's awesome! She'll be my Droid Incredible, which has been a great phone, to replace her (and my) old OG Droid. I'll probably eventually get her a used DInc 2 and keep the DInc as a back-up phone. Anyways, last night I unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone, then made a full back-up. Tonight we'll go to Verizon to switch the phone over to me. I can't freaking wait!

Verizon just did a review of the LTE version:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/16/v...-nexus-review/
They also did a speed test versus the HSPA+ version on T-Mobile. Also did a screen comparison with other phones.

If Motorola unlocks that bootloader...The Droid 3 has capable specs and should be able to run ICS just fine. That locked bootloader is going to hold off custom ROM progress for a while. This is why I avoid Motorolas. There are ways around it but its just more work for the devs.

Which one Tim or Myriam? Myriam's voice is weird to me. Speeds shouldn't change too much as the Nexus S has HSPA+. Its just a matter of T-Mobile's towers at that point.

Yeah this always threw me off every time I traveled. I even tried to fix it back in the day then I gave up and just automatically added hours wherever I was. lol. However, there might be a fix that I haven't tried. Remember to back up your Calendar first before trying this:

So apparently there's an even newer OTA coming in for the Nexus. Man they're moving fast with these updates.
http://www.androidcentral.com/androi...medium=twitter
Know that Android 4.0.2 update the Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners were so proud of yesterday? It's old news today. Google just announced Android 4.0.03 and an increase in API level (it's now 15). So what's new? Google gives us the big strokes:
- Social stream API in Contacts provider: Applications that use social stream data such as status updates and check-ins can now sync that data with each of the user’s contacts, providing items in a stream along with photos for each. This new API lets apps show users what the people they know are doing or saying, in addition to their photos and contact information.
- Calendar provider enhancements. Apps can now add color to events, for easier tracking, and new attendee types and states are now available.
- New camera capabilities. Apps can now check and manage video stabilization and use QVGA resolution profiles where needed.
- Accessibility refinements. Improved content access for screen readers and new status and error reporting for text-to-speech engines.
- Incremental improvements in graphics, database, spell-checking, Bluetooth, and more.
So the next question is when will we start seeing it on the Galaxy Nexus? Time to start those fingers a'tappin'.

The Nexus phones have full factory images straight from Google so backing up the phone isn't really necessary. Just backup your IMEI (found in the factory folder) and your apps. The rest can be restored using the factory images and fastboot straight from Google should you mess up your phone at any time. Will save you a lot of backing things up.
Just grab any File Explorer that access the system folders (I prefer Root Explorer) and copy and paste the whole "Factory" folder to somewhere safe. Pull it from the phone to your computer to keep it safe. Most updates shouldn't touch this but there have been instances where ODIN updates have deleted IMEI numbers and the only way to get them back is through a backup.
Nexus S ICS starting to roll out?

We're rolling out Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, to GSM/UMTS Nexus S devices over the coming month, starting today. Enjoy the tasty update! Once you get the update, check out some tips and shortcuts for getting started at the Android 4.0 Help Center: http://goo.gl/5C0wM
Time for you to keep mashing that check update button. lol. I hope someone on XDA grabs the update so they can start backporting stuff to the Galaxy S. Can't wait for a proper ICS for the Galaxy S.
IT HAS BEEN DONE

Looks like I have to flash back to stock 2.3.6 then flash this. Ill probably just give it a day or so until someone releases a rooted version.

It is the update. From my understanding, you need to be on 2.3.6 and have recovery on the phone. Theres very little info out there, thats why I have not flashed it yet.
Since youre not rooted, just go into settings and try to force the update.
