My take so far:
Lame opening ceremony. There was no way they could match Beijing's OC, but Vancouver didn't even try. At least Torino had the Ferrari.
NBC coverage continues to suck. Unlike Beijing, where every NBC channel was covering the events, we just get highlights on one or two channels. When they only show something like 40 minutes of the downhill...

Interesting. Interesting.
I still can't believe NBC will be showing ice dancing instead of the hockey tournament. It's basically a fucking NHL all-star tournament featuring at least 2 players who could be all time greats.
Ridiculous.

I couldn't believe the issues they were having at the short track ice arena yesterday... They majorly fucked up the ice.... a few hrs delay.
They actually showed the ice and there were giant ruts and circles and all kinds of shit on it. Although they did fix it a few hours later, yes it did fuck up the athletes' routines and Shauni Davis actually quit after just his first run.
Yet another screwup (first one being the fact that there should have been a high wall barrier on the last turn of the luge... I mean come on, a small wall and right behind that giant metal poles sticking out?!)

What Would Don Draper Do?
didn't see the opening ceremony, but i figured it'd be tough to top beijing. THAT was really something.
don't really remember much of torino. but i thought pavarotti's (sp?) ending with nessun dorma was impressive. even though it was lip synched. that had brian williams practically in tears.

I read somewhere online, so it must be true, that NBC expected to lose money by broadcasting the games but were still going to cover them. I would think that the "highlight" coverage of events is to help reduce this potential loss. Although, I really can't see them losing money.

I won't lie that I'm indifferent to who wins gold: USA or Canada. It's the benefit of living long enough in both places...
Although, if China iced a team...or Chinese Taipei...

Yep. Their forward lines are just insane...Datsyuk, Ovechkin, and Semin followed by Malkin, Kovalchuk, and Afinogenov. Yow.
Their D is probably the only question mark and something Canada has them beat on paper. Still, how do you check those two top lines of Russia...?

I have to say that Canada's coverage of the games has been outstanding so far in terms of content. We have 3 different networks teamed up which means coverage for just about everything going on. The Olympic Consortium as they call it was a great idea.

Say, anyone know if the rink will be enlarged...? Or are they playing on NHL dimensions...?

Olympic size is bigger than NHL size rink...but in Vancouver it will be NHL size.

So the US is off to a great start. Not sure if anyone caught the Snowboard cross final but the effin Canadian had a 15-20 ft lead and lost it over the last section of the race to lose the Gold.

^^ Great race.
I'm surprised at the USA lead in medals.

USA Goaltender's slogans on helmets at odds with IOC
Trouble is brewing over United States ice hockey goalie Jonathan Quick and the “Support Our Troops” slogan on his helmet. Slogans of this sort are banned under Olympic rules and Quick will be told to remove it, the International Ice Hockey Federation has told Reuters.
Ryan Miller has also been told to remove the slogan “Miller Time” from his helmet while the third American netminder Tim Thomas had already placed a sticker over a slogan on his mask for the Vancouver Winter Olympics.
IOC rules forbid political propoganda or advertisements being placed on equipment. “If the players don’t agree with the interpretation they can ask the USOC (United States Olympic Committee) to petition the IOC.”
Miller said he had agreed to remove “Miller Time”, which is also a popular beer company slogan, but might fight to keep “Matt Man”, a tribute to a dead friend from being taken off his helmet.
What do you think? Should athletes be allowed to carry personal or political messages on their clothing or equipment at the Olympic Games? Or is the IOC right to keep such messages out of the Games?

sure, something like "matt man" is not controversial compared to, say, "support our troops" and is harmless, but the players know (or should know) what the rules are and should follow them if they want to be involved in the olympics.
i can see both sides of the argument, and it seems petty because a lot of the slogans are harmless. and in this case, "matt man" isn't a propaganda or advertisement. but if that's what the rules are, then they should be followed.

if it's against the IOC rules, then i think players should adhere to them.

that's retarded.. who looks at a goalies helmet for details anyways. His helmet has received so much media attention that it really doesn't matter now.. if no one said a word I'm sure the greater public wouldn't have known better. I'm sure this stunt will pull in more US viewers now..

perhaps it is a stunt to get more viewers. i wouldn't be surprised.
i'm not a hockey fan and i don't watch a lot of hockey. but when i do watch, i do notice stuff on helmets.

I like watching hockey but I don't consider myself a fan, but I'll be watching the U.S. kick some ass!
