From what I recall from the opening ceremonies the US and Canada were within 2 or 3 of eachother at 205 to 208 each. The Germans were around 180ish...BUT, they didn't sent a women's hockey team so its closer than it sounds.

Norway is impressive. 4.8 million people, 23 Medals.

we dont normally keep as close of tabs on the winter olympics. they are kind of boring (aside from snowboarding, and hockey)

the more exciting sports for the country as a whole are in the summer games.
i guess we shouldnt be "suprised" but i definately wouldnt bet on us winning the most medals at the winter olympics each go around. not many people follow curling, speed skating and ice skating duo's

I know American's don't put as much weight on the Winter games as they do the summer, (Hell Canadians may not either) but its still pretty big in the US. I'm sure those in Northern states would agree.

i think it's fair to say that most countries are into the summer olympics more simply because there are more nations involved.

you'd be surprised the number of people that follow curling, speed skating, etc.

agreed, im sure there is a loyal fanbase comprised of thosands somewhere. but in comparison to the major summer sports.. relatively small.

but kudos to anyone who wins a gold at any sport.. you can say you were the best in the world at that time

have you lived in louisiana all your life?

it's not like all of the sports in the summer games have huge fanbases and followings.

True...but in the USA...we don't really care.

If we won the gold, nobody would have cared outside of die hard NHL fans.

It does not mean much to us.

We care more about short track, figure skating, bobsled, ice dancing, alpine sports....than we do about hockey.

We are lucky that NBC actually broadcast the game live and uncut.

chicago, tampa bay, and new orleans/baton rouge.

i wasnt being derogatory

i was saying i bet they have a nice gerthy following, but in comparison to the big summer sports, not all summer sports in general, it would still be a big difference. no harm meant

You sure?

17.6/33 overnight rating, via Sports Business Daily. Writes Lepore:

This is up 46% from the 2002 USA/Canada showdown, and will very likely be the highest-rated hockey game since 1980. The share means that 1 in every 3 Americans with a TV were watching the game. This is, to put it professionally, out of this world.

Sunday's game drew a higher overnight rating than every World Series game since 2004 (including every game of Yankees/Phillies last year), every NBA Finals telecast since 1998, and every NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four game since at least '98.

Excluding the NFL, the 17.6 overnight for the game is the second-highest of the year for any sporting event, behind only the Texas/Alabama BCS National Championship Game in January (18.2).
I'm surprised at the 46% increase over the 02 Salt Lake games.

Yea, I'm sure.

Nobody here in my office talked about the game at all...either on Friday, or today.....and a lot of peeps in my office are huge sports fans.

:crickets: when it comes to hockey.

If you think Americans would have been celbrating out in the streets if they won hockey gold........I've got some tropical island property in Canada to sell you.

Shatup. The NHL is flourishing in the US. The game couldn't be any more popular. NBC's ratings are great and everyone has VS.

idk i kinna have to agree with moog on this one.

i dont know one person who takes any extra effort to see a hockey game.
and yes, i've lived in 2 places where there are teams... still dont know anybody personally, (maybe a few people's dads) that actually follow hockey in a sense that its their favorite sport.

the fans are there... just not like you'd expect.

Should have used red text.

Those ratings were a glimmer of hope for the NHL. Let's see whay they do with it from here.

And there are Hockey die hards in the US. In Boston, in Minnesota, in New York, Chicago and Detroit. Few and far between but they're there.

So long as Bettman runs the show, the NHL will continue its slow slide towards unnoticed in the USA.

It's sad.....really sad. Hockey is such an exciting fantastic game.
There are so many young superstars in this league right now.....and yet Bettman cannot sell the game?!?!?!!?

Bettman hates Canada, USA, and the NHL.

methinks he is a sekrit agent from teh NBAz.....to killz teh NHLz.

I've always liked hockey, I use to watch on 13" b&w, I can't get to a lot of games, maybe one a year, but I'm starting to enjoy it more than football, I just can't keep up with the names of the players. And the NBA is a just complete effing bore, but it's a street game.

Maybe that's just a SoCal thing? There was a pretty big buzz around it here and the bar I was at yesterday was packed for the game.

Nope. The east coast/new england has always been big on hockey.
Same for the northern part of the U.S.

However the rest of the country does not care.

NHL hockey is barely a 4th tier sport in the U.S.
It does not magically become tier one interest during the Olympics.

Nobody cared when the USA team was announced.....yet in Canada pretty much everyone tuned in just for the roster announcement.

The USA is not interested in hockey.

Compared to how many payed attention to the roster announcement after the winter classic in the US

Team USA had to attach the announcement to the winter classic just to get some interest....otherwise nobody would have cared.

At best the team announcement would have been below the fold of page one on the sports page....probably not considering all the college New Years bowl games.....it would have ended up on page 2 or 3, 4, 5, 6.

Should have been 15 golds. Not sure you guys watched the women's curling final but Bernard missed a very easy gold medal winning takeout in the 10th end.

<--watched curling.

Sometimes they can't handle the pressure...the easy shots can fail.

...and I think I'm gonna be on Team USA mens curling at the next game.

"Without messing around, we need to start preparations for Sochi. But taking into account what happened in Vancouver, we need to completely change how we prepare our athletes," Medvedev said.

It wasn't that bad of a program. You have to respect a winter games record for Golds.

I just wish I didn't have to pay for it.

Let's face it if the US won everyone would've talked about it. If not, It's b/c you're in Southern California. When a home team loses every monday is quite(see nfl).

The number of viewers is a huge step in the right direction for the US. But you'll never be able to force a sport in areas like Phoenix etc..

Sure people would have talked about it if the USA won, but would it have increased interest in Hockey? NOPE. Not in the USA.

4th tier sport....no matter if the USA wins gold in the next 4 olympics...it will still be a 4th tier sport in the USA.
