Did anyone catch TSN last night between 7:30 and 8?

And yes, CTV's coverage was pretty bad IMO. I was flipping over to NBC fairly often.

Goddam.. to that Georgian luger. I just saw video of it and WOW, he was going hella fast when he lost control and hit that pole, such a tragedy.
And I also lawled when they showed a closeup of Gretzky with the torch, looked like he was freezing his ass off or was thinking "hurry the fuck up! I'm so bored!" lol
Btw, who was the one that lit the official torch? Or was it those 4 people who all lit it from the 4 different sides? I guess I was a little confused there if that was the actual torch and stopped watching after that; got $10 riding on it lol.

I liked the special effects but I didn't find the ceremony interesting. The NBC coverage was meh too. I didn't even make it to the torch lighting.

After the indoor cauldron was lit, Gretzky was then escorted to light the outdoor cauldron.

Saw the opening bit of the ceremonies...I dunno, was it just me or did others here think it just...sucked...?
It seemed rather second-rate and amateurish...

Interesting. Interesting.
I didn't think the opening ceremonies sucked....I thought it was pretty good for a Winter Games ceremony. I didn't need KD Lang or that Opera chick, but it was typical for the Olympics.
It sucked that the cauldron didn't open all the way....it's a pretty cool structure. And I loved the crowd response when the Canadian team walked in last.

When it's that bad, yes.
Iirc in NCAA if the one team is losing realllllly bad they can just forfeit or something like that.

I don't like how people are switching their citizenships to other countries, and competing for them... especially if it happened really recently. I think that's bull shit. I can understand, if they immigrated years and years ago, or grew up in that country... but as late as last year?? C'mon?

I don't really watch figure skating... but the TV just happened to be on it.... anyway, there's a Russian couple, the chick is Japanese, and just last year, gave up her Japanese citizenship, changed her name to a more... Russian sounding name, doesn't even speak Russian...
Just last year, she was still a Japanese citizen. Then, what's the point? It's one thing when USC go out and scout kids from all over the country, so what happens when countries start "scouting" from other countries?

Figure skating is pretty impressive actually. I couldn't care less about the artsy component that makes up 90% of what they do but when they're throwing each other and themselves in the air and landing on ice it's incredible.
The judging is crooked as shit though.

I meant if the pairs could represent their individual nation... but yeah.. even dual citizen recognition would be cool.

I will agree that some of the effects were cool though... but again, the technical difficulties for the lighting of the torch kind of put a mark on that as well.
I also think it's appalling how the IOC is treating the luge tragedy. There is no reason for them to publicly come out and blame the luger for the accident. If they do not think the track design is partially to blame, then they are just being ignorant. Even if they feel that way they should hold all comments until the Olympics have concluded. To make such a statement so soon after his death and as other lugers are competing on that very track is just ridiculous. I also understand that it is tough to modify the opening ceremonies at the last minute due to timing issues and such... but it seemed very hasty the way they "honored" him.
edit - oh yeah... I know I mentioned the effects... but the whales really were awesome...

Opening ceremonies were "ok"....but enough with the "first peoples"......I get it...cool.....but almost the entire ceremony is about them?!??!
By the time the ceremony got "interesting" I was already uninterested.
@ Gretzky.....and who's gonna get fired over the failed torch?
...best part was the whales on the arena floor...that was

VANCOUVER (Reuters) - Johnny Weir was forced to abandon his vow to never again live in the confines of a "communal athletes village" after the "crazy fur people" issued death threats against the American fashionista.
The figure skater felt the full wrath of animal rights activists PETA after he wore a fur-trimmed outfit at last month's U.S. Nationals.
The self-styled diva makes no secret of liking his own space and creature comforts but for the second Winter Games in succession, he has been forced to "rough it" -- albeit in a room lit with scented candles and decorated with pink bath mats.
"All these crazy fur people definitely changed my mind. Security wise, staying in a hotel would be very difficult," Weir told reporters after turning up for an 0800 news conference sporting a striking red and white silk scarf looped around his neck and with his nails manicured.
"There have been threats against me. Threats of harming me personally and I didn't want to get hurt. So I decided to stay in the village and my team has made it as comfortable as possible.
"I don't want any outside influences to hurt my chances here. Even though I'm not always comfortable rooming with somebody or being in a communal village sort of situation, it's what I've got to deal with."
Weir, who plans to join the fashion world once he has hung up his "leather skates made of cow" for good, felt he was unfairly targeted.
"There was a lot of attention put on a tiny piece of fur," said the 25-year-old, the 2008 world bronze medalist. "While I do understand anti-fur activists views about fur and the fur industry, they aren't part of my life.
"One thing that is horrible is when somebody pushes a belief on you like a religion. I was definitely threatened and felt very threatened. People are nuts
