Post Hawks add NHL legend Scotty Bowman to front office

From Dailyherald...

In a major move to bolster their front office, the Blackhawks have signed legendary coach and Hockey Hall of Famer Scotty Bowman as senior adviser of hockey operations.

A press conference has been called at 2 p.m. today at the United Center to introduce Bowman, 74, to the Chicago media. Blackhawks president John McDonough and general manager Dale Tallon will make the introduction. Stan Bowman, the team's assistant general manager of hockey operations, also will be on hand.

The decision to add Bowman is a key move in that it provides McDonough with a strong figure to run the "hockey side" of the business with Tallon as McDonough focuses on the overall operation and brand of the franchise. With GM Dale Tallon having one year left on his contract, it also gives McDonough a solid perspective to evaluate Tallon's performance, and weakens Detroit's front office.

Bowman has spent the last three seasons as a consultant for the Detroit Red Wings, a team he coached for nine seasons and led to three Stanley Cup championships. As a consultant, he was involved in player personnel decisions and he also did some scouting for the defending Stanley Cup champions.

Bowman coached 30 years in the NHL and joined the Red Wings in 1994 and guided the Wings to their 10th Stanley Cup Championship in 2002. His record is legendary with 11 Stanley Cup titles overall, including nine as a head coach and one with Pittsburgh's front office in 1991 and one with Detroit last season. Bowman has coached four different teams (St. Louis, Montreal, Pittsburgh and Detroit) to 13 Stanley Cup Finals, accumulating a 9-4 record. In a total of 58 Stanley Cup Finals games, Bowman has won 36 and lost 22.

He is the only coach in NHL history to lead three different teams to Stanley Cup glory: Montreal (5 times), Pittsburgh (1 time) and Detroit (3 times). When he retired from coaching, he was the all-time NHL coaching leader in regular season victories (1,244) as well as playoff wins (223) with an combined career win total of 1,467 NHL games, all records not likely to be broken.

Tim Sassone, Mike Spellman and Barry Rozner will have more on the Blackhawks and Scotty Bowman later today.

Edmonton is picking up the offices and moving it to some city warmer and not stuck in the middle of the Arctic tundra in order for free agents to finally give 2 hoots about joining the Oilers.

It's about time he got his own GM job. Tambellini has a pretty good managerial resume...always on the short list for the vacant GM jobs.

I'm quite sadden by this move.........no more opportunities for future feuds between Lowe & Burke!!!!!!

It's official Beachball has been bought out!!!!

For those who haven't been following closely, the Kings bought about Cloutier's contract but Cloutier filed a grievance, basically alleging that he's injured and therefore should have the buyout voided. According to the Kings, the league has agreed that Cloutier's buyout should stand. Officially, Cloutier is considered bought out. His $1.033 million for this season will count against the salary cap.

I'm surprised he went to the Hawks...It must have been one sell-job by Rocky Wirtz et al...and also speaks volumes about how the franchise has indeed turned around since Bill's death.

He's a decent defenseman. Above average offensively, below average defensively. He's not a 6.5 million dollar d-Man which is I beleive what he's making on average over the length of the contract. If he was making 3.5 or 4, we wouldn't have as much of a problem with him.

He has a good shot and had one good year on the power-play. But once teams figured out how to stop him, he hasn't done much.

Looking at his production stats-wise, his salary seems to be kinda the going rate these days...? Lookit how much the Hawks forked over for Campbell...Then, there's Boyle's deal and etc. etc. (lotsa examples of similar type of D-men)...

Cap/floor space with LA:

Word on the street...and not far from the Horses (Lombardi's) mouth is:

Lombardi wanted this type of cap space, because he doesn't want any problems re-signing Kopitar and Johnson next year. He also wanted to have the cap room in case someone gave O'Sullivan an offer sheet; he wants the capability of matching, and at the same time sending a message to other GMs, "You try to take my star player, I'll try to take yours."

The young kids are not going anywhere.....and I still about teh Bulin Wall proposals.

That sounds great...for next year. But, what're teams like your Kings going to do for THIS year...?

It doesn't solve anything about the fact that teams like LA are several million below the required cap space.

O sullivan's signing will take up a good chunk of space.
Throw in some "rentals" from the dumpster pool...and we are fine.

Hey, a Hawks fan could dream about the biggest ripoff of this decade in hockey...Kopitar for Bulin.

That being said, I'm positive Bulin will be traded one way or the other...latest will be the trade deadline.

Meh...I kinda disagree. He's a Cup winner and starting goalies on Cup winning teams don't fall off trees. His stats were down in Chicago but you have to attribute that to 2 years of playing behind a VERY young and even porous D...

If Chicago actually keeps Nik around this year, I think he'll have significantly better numbers. I still think he's a Top 10 netminder in the right situation and with the right cast.

THAT...is an excellent question, dude. Not sure why Tallon brought in Huet instead of signing Bulin to an extension.

And what got me puzzled was what now happens to Crawford since the Hawks were saying for the last couple of years that he was the GoTF.

Personally, I would've used the $$$$ to sign Rolston or a top-line center/winger.
