A few days after Edmonton Oilers' Kevin Lowe fired back at rival GM Brian Burke, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman tried to pour water on the feud of the two rival team executives.

Following comments by Burke over the past year and comments Lowe made recently to an Edmonton radio station, Bettman ordered the two to cease and desist in a conference call Monday.

Burke and Lowe have been at odds since the Oilers put forth a five-year, $21.25 million offer sheet to Group II restricted free agent Dustin Penner last summer - a contract that the Ducks did not match and sent Penner to Edmonton.

"If I had run my team into the sewer like that I wouldn't throw a grenade at the other 29 teams and my own indirectly," said Burke before the start of last season. "So I have no intention of speaking to him anytime soon."

Apparently Lowe finally had enough. In a candid interview, the Oilers' GM railed against Burke calling him a 'moron' and a 'media-junkie'.

"Here's a fact - he left (former Canucks GM) Dave Nonis nothing in Vancouver," Lowe added. "Nothing. He destroyed that team. If it wasn't for Nonis' incredible deals - to con Mike Keenan to get (Roberto) Luongo in Vancouver - that team was taking a nose dive two years ago."

"I hate the fact that my name is linked to his. He's an underachieving wanna-be in terms of success in the NHL."

Bettman should let those two at it at center ice during intermission of the next Oilers-Ducks game.

5 robots on Lowe.

IMO it's about time that Lowe had a response. Too often Burke's been saying "Lowe is to blame for this..." and "Lowe is to blame for that..."

Yumchah....Bettman needs to be included in that center ice tilt. Lowe & Burke should gang up on Bettman, and then take care of each other.

Lowe is right about Burke in two aspects:

1.) Burke is a "media junkie" - check
2.) Burke sells the farm to field a winning team - check (although jury is still out for his brief tenure in Hartford)

Burke has been acting like a douche bag. I've had enough of his bitching.

He's an underachieving wanna-be in terms of success in the NHL. He won a Stanley Cup? Great. I've won six Stanley Cups, you want to count rings? Who cares, it's just a little pathetic that he carries on."

Why Toronto so desperately wants Burke is beyond me. He is incredibly over rated.

It'd be interesting to see how good of GM Burke is when he has to rebuild a franchise as opposed to running a team on the upswing.

Yup...I saw that article too. Too bad a rookie GM is already stirring the pot so to speak. I guess this scenario will affect future trades with St. Louis & Vancouver in the future.

Leafs sign Joe Nieuwendyk
http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=242841&l...headlines_main

No not as a player even though he is still probably better than the majority of their roster. He's been added as a special assistant to the GM.

I like this move. I think Nieuwendyk will bring a lot of leadership and hockey knowledge to the Leafs front office. Not exactly sure what his official duties will be but I think this is a step in the right direction. He knows the game and knows what it takes to win. They need more guys like him running the show.

I agree. Stay at home D-Men continue to be underrated in the NHL.

I'd have taken him at 2.x over Finger at 3.5 anyday.

Post NHL and RHL Reach Transfer Agreement...

From TSN...

The NHL reached an agreement with a new Russian hockey league Thursday that temporarily ends the threat of players being lured away by big-money offers.

The pact to respect player contracts across all borders followed offers made last month by teams in Russia's Continental Hockey League - which begins play in September - to entice Evgeni Malkin out of the final year of his deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

It was reached at a meeting of the NHL, the NHL Players' Association and international hockey leagues in Zurich, the home of the International Ice Hockey Federation.

"Everyone in the room agreed that for the foreseeable future everyone will respect everybody's contracts," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said.

Players' union director Paul Kelly said all parties recognized the need for "clear respect between leagues."

The deal was brokered with Russian league founder Alexander Medvedev, who had given his teams a green light to approach players like Malkin.

Medvedev was nominated to the working group that will meet in New York in September in hopes of creating an international transfer agreement to replace the one that lapsed last month after six European leagues backed out.

Russia had withdrawn three years ago.

The group will also look at plans to globalize the game, including holding a World Cup in 2012.

"There is no sense to make a war," IIHF president Rene Fasel said. "Everyone agrees we could make a war very easily, but with no winner. The loser will be the game.

"Even if we don't have a transfer agreement today we have a very good understanding of each other."

The European nations - Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Sweden, Slovakia and Switzerland - also want an increase in the US$200,000 compensation fee they get when an out-of-contract player leaves for an NHL franchise.

The Continental league, known as the KHL in Russia, will have 24 teams - including one each in neighbouring Belarus and Kazakhstan - that can have five overseas players on a 25-man roster.

Daly said the NHL and KHL established a mutual understanding since meeting at the IIHF world championships in Canada in May.

"We don't view them as a threat," he said. "We still believe the best hockey players in the world will continue to want to play in the NHL.

"But having said that, they want to establish a new order and a new league that may one day be broader than Russia," Daly added. "It is an ambitious business plan and it looks like they have capable leadership."

With demand for players likely to drive up salaries, the NHLPA sees the Russian newcomer as a positive development.

"It gives some of our guys another place to play," Kelly said. "It gives them some leverage they might not otherwise have, which is to present to their NHL teams that they have a competing offer from a KHL team and maybe improve their bargaining position.

"And if a young Russian player wants to come and play in the NHL he should have the freedom to do so."

Kelly said he was having his first meeting with Medvedev, deputy chairman of the world's biggest natural gas supplier Gazprom.

"Alex is obviously a passionate hockey guy. He has some very firm nationalist ideas and that is also a good thing," Kelly said.

Medvedev left the Zurich meetings early but is expected at the Sept. 4 meeting in New York.

"We have an aggressive agenda," Kelly said. "It is time for us to tackle these difficult issues. Today was a real good first step."

Interesting.

Maybe this league has some legs after all. If they succeed in getting teams established in Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic, Germany etc. That could be some trouble for the NHL.

its sad to see such a young talent go to waste

Post Radulov Leaves Preds for Russia...

Um...what transfer agreement?

From TSN...

Alexander Radulov has made the jump back home, as the young forward signed with Ufa of the Russian Superleague on Thursday.

The financial details of the contract were not disclosed.

Radulov, who is still under contract with the Nashville Predators, said he had warned the team that he wanted to play in Russia.

"I told my bosses in Nashville that I wanted to play at home and some Russian clubs were offering me much better conditions than I had in Nashville," Radulov told the Russian media.

"They said they would call me back but never phoned. It seems that they were either not really interested in me or just did not believe I could return home. One way or another, I'm happy to come home."

Radulov, 22, scored 22 goals and 58 points in 82 games with Nashville last season and made $688,900. He has one year left on his entry-level deal that pays $984,000 next season.

The former Quebec Rempart added that it was unlikely that the Predators would be able to demand his return to North America, as the NHL had no transfer agreement with either the Russian Superleague or the new Continental Hockey League at the time.

Leafs Trade for Hollweg...

Who...?

From CNNSI...

The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired forward Ryan Hollweg from the New York Rangers for a 2009 fifth-round draft pick on Monday.

The 25-year-old Hollweg had two goals and two assists and 96 penalty minutes in 70 games for the Rangers.

He has five goals and seven assists in 200 career NHL games, all with the Rangers.

He was New York's eighth-round choice, 238th overall, in the 2001 draft.

New York gets Pittsburgh's pick in next year's draft, which was acquired by Toronto in the deal that sent defenseman Hal Gill to the Penguins at the deadline last season.
