Well, Pens...you get a bonafide scorer at the wings now with Phil. It's a good pick-up, IMO. He'll be a good fit with the leadership core in place in Pittsburgh.

The San Jose Sharks signed defenseman Paul Martin to a four-year contract on Wednesday, according to TSN. Financial terms were not released.

Martin, 34, spent the last five seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He had three goals and 20 points in 74 games with the Penguins in 2014-15.

Martin could add a significant veteran presence alongside Brent Burns in San Jose.

In 11 seasons with the New Jersey Devils and Penguins, Martin has 43 goals and 272 points in 697 games. He was selected in the second round (No. 62) in the 2000 NHL Draft by the Devils.

Martin has five goals and 40 points in 85 games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Bye Bye P-Mart.

Oilers overpay for pylon Sekera. Ask the Kings how great he was in getting them into the playoffs.

Oh right, Deano never makes a bad trade. Sekera was awesome.

rumor is pens obtain a second round pick and we traded spaling along with the other two guys. win all around can't be happier. we held on to our young D men also. might rather have kapanen than pouliot but time will tell.

TSN's Darren Dreger reported that the Leafs will also pay 15 per cent of Kessel's massive contract, which has seven years left on it at $8 million US per season

I hate to see Kap go, but I'm glad that we kept Pouliot and Maata

He should be fine for our third line which is pretty much where I am certain he will play.

I only just realized it was the first day of free agency when I looked at my phone and had a bunch of alerts from the NHL app.

Kessel, Tyler Biggs, Tim Erixon and 2nd in 2016 for Kapanen, Harrington, Spaling, 1st and 3rd picks in 2016. TOR retains $1.25M/year.

Insanity...Kessel's an elite talent...comparing what the Hawks got for Saad, you'd think Toronto was fleeced. Esp. since the Pens' top prospects are Pouliot and Maata...both of whom did not get included.

So, it kinda shows how badly Shannyban wanted Phil out. Yeowch.

Hopefully Phil can rebuild his rep in Pittsburgh.

Kapanen and Harrington were our 1st and 2nd round picks, so they're definitely not slouches, but I definitely didn't think we'd land Phil without Maata or Pouliot being involved. But either way, it was a good 2 way deal

Yeah, not saying the peeps going the other way were horrid...but, considering Maata and Pouliot are the gems of the Pens pipeline and they got to hold onto them in the Fill trade, it's a win.

The only caveat is that Fill does his job because as they were saying on TSN, playing with Sid and Malkin does require the winger to go into the boards at times to retrieve the puck and get it back to either center to then either shoot or re-dish.

Well, we all know Fill hates contact and won't go near the boards like it was poison...so, that'll have to change.

The only way that the deal was possible was for Toronto to eat part of that contract, which I'm glad they did. Like I said, the Pens couldn't handle 8M a year, 6.75 is much more reasonable and with Martin taking 5 mil with him away from the cap, it's not a terrible deal.

Yep. So, at least the Pens address their winger issue.

Now, if the young blueline can pan out, the Pens should be very competitive soon. I would not mind seeing them sign a veteren to help the kids on D...but, not sure what they have left in cap space?

They tried that last trade deadline, didn't pan out too well. They did just extend Ian Cole which was a good move, and I think we're stuck with Lovejoy for another year, so they have no need for more D at this point

Thanks for nothing Phil. You were miscast here from day 1 and the team failed to build around you so can't really blame him. I like this deal for the Pens. Not too certain if who we got back is a good value but Phil had to go. And now I'm hearing Phil will start working with Gary Roberts this summer? 6 years too late Phil. Asshat.

Although I'm still a bit confused why the Pens would be interested. They already had Hornquist.

Brad Richards on his original six tour stop. I predict a cup in Detroit next season then he'll sign a one year deal in Toronno.

Too bad babs left too early, Holland got him his prized right hand D finally.

So apparently the only person in Toronto who's going to miss Kessel is the Hot Dog vendor right outside his building. Apparently, Phil visited him every day.

But all jokes aside, I hope he produces 40+ goals per year for the Pens. I think he a good dude who was miscast here in Toronto. Not everyone is a leader or built to handle the pressure he had to face day in and out.

He's a damn talented player.

I just realized the Leaves got back a Finlandian in the Kessel deal.

Clearly, Leaves won this trade....by a landslide. Anytime you can clear out an American AND bring in an Finlandian its Win Win.
