The shoot out was neat at first but I've definitely grown tired of seeing teams lose games and gain points in the standings. I also hate the concept of 3 point games. The b's were being chased by Montreal and Tampa in the division race last week, Tampa an Montreal play each other, at the end of the night, they have both moved closer to the b's because the he went to ot.

I miss ties

Extending the OT until there's a winner would be great IMO. So, 4 vs. 4...then, 3 vs. 3...I would like that better than the talent show.

I'm not sure the nhlpa is going to be on board with multiple overtimes in the regular season.

There's no way the player's association would ever allow that. If teams are playing back to back games, or even 3 games in 4 nights, you can't have the possibility of games lasting that long. You're thinking of it only as a viewer. Yes, we all agree that overtime would be better than a shootout, but as an athlete, why would they want to potentially play 8 or 9 periods in two days. They're exposing themselves to more injuries and fatigue that way.

Also think about it in terms of travel. With the shootout you're only adding a few more minutes. If you're making a game where you have no idea what time it's over and you have to be across the country tomorrow, this isn't practical at all.

Like I said, in theory it's a good idea to end shootouts but that is not going to happen at all. The only thing that would make practical sense would be to bring back the tie. This isn't going to happen either though because ties are ridiculously boring and archaic.

To me it makes the most sense to go to the 3-2-1 points system if you're going to change it. Give more incentive to win in regulation. I don't think there's a perfect solution and its likely to stay how it is.

I'd say if you're going to tinker with the overtime just make it a 10 minute overtime of 4 on 4. I think 3 on 3 just makes it into another "talent show" like the shootout. But I guess adding 5 minutes 3 on 3 might be a tad better than the shootout?

I don't think toes in and I themselves are boring, all the shoot out is is an extra skills comp after a tie so you can say someone won the game.

The problem was that back in the 5 on 5 ot days where games could end in a tie, teams didn't play overtime to win, they played to not lose an subsequently lose that point. That was what gave us boring ot and the rule changes that made 4 on 4 ot with a shoot out after.

What really changed the way ot was played was giving out the extra point if the game went to ot. The single point was secured and the bonus point was up for grabs. This way you had nothing to lose on terms of standings points and teams really went for the win.

Dom's trying to convince us he's a ducks fan, no one believes it. Fibby is coming to terms with the playoff appearance streak is ending. The penguins have officially been renamed the pengoons, James Kneel is now the correct spelling. Yummy no longer roots for Chicago, he's a Edmonton oilers fan now. Rounder keeps us updated on which NHL players dongs he's seen, we all wish he'd stop. Moog now considers 1 goal in 6 periods an "offensive outburst". I am now the ambassador of Finland and we are all awaiting the national embarrasment of at the conclusion of Olympic Finlandomination.

I agree with you to a certain extent. I just think that a tie in sports blasphemous. The point of competing is to see which team is better than the other. Even if it is a somewhat meaningless game, you always go into competition with the goal of beating the other person or other team. For me, ties do not belong in any sports. Some sports it is harder than others to avoid a tie, but hockey not so much. I'm not defending a shootout, but I just think a tie does not belong in hockey.

You also have to look at it not just from the aspect of a diehard fan, but from the aspects of all fans of hockey. Let's face it, hockey is a very unpopular sport in the states, and is struggling to stay afloat. A shootout, although most loyal hockey fans don't like it, is exciting to watch and is very time efficient in determining the outcome of a game. For example, the winter classic is the NHL's way of drawing in more fans to the NHL and making a sort of novelty game. Do you think the average fan would watch the whole Winter Classic if it went into double OT, or if it ended in a tie? This would be a detriment to drawing in causal fans. These are the fans that the NHL needs in order to survive.

I guess we have to agree to disagree in regards to ties being blasphemous. The most popular sport in the world can end in ties, I don't see what hockey can't. Personally I'd rather see hockey games be settled by playing hockey not a 1 on 1 skills competition.

Yes, but the most popular sport in the world is also one of the least popular sports in America. So if you're talking about ties in international hockey that's a different thing, but in America that argument won't go very far.

Having watched a game that went past 2 am in OT, I never want that to happen again. I like that the shootout means that the game will end, but I agree that it is a bit of a talent show.

The top line for Russia in the Olympics is going to be Odouchecan, Semin, and Malkin, so Malkin is going to have to forecheck, backcheck, and make plays for 3 people

I predict a 12-0 victory for the Fins over Team Canada. Rask will make also 239 saves in the game to further cement his legacy as the single-greatest reason why he's the greatest player on the planet. The Olympic committee will give him an honorary gold medal for his amazing effort.

Crosby has NOTHING on Rask. Nothing.

Word on the street is the is going to forfeit their game to Finlandia, as the forfeit is not as embarrassing has getting beaten 12-0.

We'll all be eating some big-time crow if the Fins do beat Canada. But, unless the squad sleep-walks, I think their depth will win out and likely take the game 4-1.

That's my fearless prediction. And I'm not putting down the bong.

I have now seen the light and understand the power of the Finlandia program. I was ignorant to their ways and star power and didn't realize international rankings were actually worth something.

Thank you Black Label for setting me straight.

Yet not even Finlandia was able to set its Scandinavian neighbours the Sedin twins straight. I fear they're simply too gay.
