As much as the headbutt was a classless act, I would not be suprised that he was reacting to some racist shit from Materazzi. He has been known for talking like that to opposing players.

Anyways, congrats to Italia for their win and we shall see each other in Euro 2008 and South Africa 2010

Maybe. But Zidane has been around a long time and has heard every type of trash talking there is. It just doesnt make sense. Then again there have been times in the past where Zidane has lost his temper.

Very true - I chalk this incident up to frustration + naughty remark.

EDIT: The guys that were on St. Clair, did you see that 3km long flag? It was rolled into a small tube, that thing was nuts, nobody knew what it was until you saw the next colour

Just found out Zidane won the Golden Ball Award for best player of the tournament. That's because voting ended at half time of the championship game.

Even so, I don't think he was the best player of the tournament regardless of the red card.

And he missed a game because of a red. Strange descesion. He was the best from the round of 16 on though, when he was playing.

Cannavaro should have won the award. Of course he wasn't as noticable as Zidane since he doesn't score goals, but he was AT LEAST as important to his team and his team won the championship.

I'm sure Materazzi said something to spark that, but c'mon, these players talk shit to each other all of the time. That was a completely classless act by Zidane. He has severely fallen off of my radar of respected players...

And why end the vote at halftime? That's very odd...

Apparently Fifa is seriously thinking about taking the World Cup 2010 away from South Africa, and U.S. is one of the top choices as a replacement host.

Watching Zidane humiliate himself, his team and his crappy country just before the curtain fell on his career made my weekend. Italy winning was just a bonus.

Italy's De Rossi was given 4 games for that elbow. I'd imagine at least 10 for this. Far more blatant.

Rumour around here is that Materaazzi was saying some stuff about muslims. But if he had you'd think Zidane would want to talk about it afterward. Instead her chose not to.

From an article on FOXSports :

"France coach Raymond Domenech had no doubts who the villain was, blaming Materazzi for provoking Zidane into the incident that brought a sour ending to a remarkable career."
I guess he has to support his captain but it's WORDS! Nothing can excuse what Zidane did - if Materazzi did something physical then maybe i could understand...

oh the burning questions left after the finale!

I don't know, I'd rather get headbutted in my chest than get an elbow ---> cut in my face.

Either way, I thought it was pretty funny that anyone would ever do such a thing.

Like why did they pull Henry at the end? Cramps are something, yes, but let the guy sit there on the side and wait for the PKs to begin. With Zidane and Viera out, they needed every extra shooter.

But De Rossi didn't deliberatley walk up to him and throw an elbow. It happened in play while going for the ball.

10 games if I was Sepp Blatter or whoever makes those decesions.

Just because he elbowed him in the face during a play doesn't mean that his intentions weren't as bad. Noone goes up for a header like that - swinging their arm into soemone's face without trying to hurt someone.

I dont care if voting ended at the half (which sounds odd to begin with), they should strip him of the award.

IMO Zidnae's action were far worse than De Rossi's.

De Rossi's actions were bad but it could have been caused by a split second bad decesion. It was not pre-meditated. Zidane's action were entirely pre-meditated. He took like 5 steps towards him and had seconds to think about how he was going to hurt Matrix.

Its like Dale Hunter or Todd Bertuzzi in the NHL. They knew exactly what they were doing and how the were going to do it. They were both banned for a full season BTW.

I like how they used the snapshot of him having to walk past the Cup on his way to the tunnel. ABC used that in their little video at the end yesterday.
