Lots of tears for the French players.

Even if he did make the shot, I wouldn't put my money on Barthez actually saving any shots. Barthez would have had to step up for them to win in PKs...I think Buffon would definitely have come on top.

How do you head butt someone like that? I've never ever seen someone get head butted and just fall stunned like that. Zidane must have a crazy noggin.

what a whack ending haha. i cant tell if materazzi kinda let himself fall or if zidane's headbutt was that hardcore?! i mean good lord!! haha when i saw that i literally spat out my drink. france controlled OT, even when they were a man down, so it sucks they had to lose in pk's like that after controlling the later parts of the match.

i still dont understand why they sub henry so late in the game... sure he was injured/cramped/tired, but he must have not been able to even take a pk. bc if he is able to take a pk, i say leave him in the game for those last 2 mins and have him chill up top by himself. i can only fathom that he must not been able to even take a shot (Pk).

other than that, italy finally got some redemption after its horrible roberto baggio '94 pk lose vs brazil.... now they are on the other side with trezeguet hitting the bar and missing. good cup, see ya in euro 2008 and more importantly 2010 in south africa, ill be there!

oh and just some random facts that were brought to my attention, the last time germany won all 3 group stage matches ('70), they won the cup the next one ('74). and also, theyve won in 90, 74 and 54. 1990 + 1974 - 1954 = 2010 haha

i dont really believe in all that random freak numbers coincidence stuff, but its just interesting. deutschland 2008 and 2010!!!

hopefully we can keep some good soccer threads goin for EPL, champions league and other tourneys as they come!

I watched the game and wanted France too win because I wanted to see Zidane go out on top but WTF was he thinking? I'll also admit I really enjoyed watching the World Cup and look forward too watching again in 2010. Go USA 2010 or bust.

Well... I'm pretty sure Materrazi was busting his balls, so thats why he headbutted him.

agreed...i wanted to see zidane go on top...but seeing the equivalent of an MJ of soccer or at least the best player in the last 25 years head-butt someone was ridiculous. Man if anyone finds a really good pic, please post. I kinda want this on my wallpaper haha...I nearly choked on my drink.

Well, he wasn't subbed out in the last 2 minutes if I remember correctly. There was still a good 10+ minutes of soccer left. He was so exhausted - played a pretty good game...probably just totally ran out of gas and figured he couldn't make it the rest of the game.

Zizou, crappy way to end a career numbnuts.

Finale seemed anticlimactic this time, felt like just another Eurocup. Oh, well - already looking forward to 2010.

That doesn't mean he shoulda headbutted him - athletes bust eachothers balls all game long , doesn't give them the right to hit/headbutt someone else. It's just words but Zidane really made me lose a lotta respect with that cheapshot...sad way for him to go...

Nonetheless, congrats to Italia and to a great World Cup! Def gonna miss it after a month of great matches!

Forza Italia!!! I have to root for my Italian heritage.

After watching the game at my parents in Queens, I went down to Francis Lewis Blvd to watch the celebrations. It was completely insane.. There were literally hundreds if not thousands of cars with Italian flags and people lined up on each side street. In all my years, I've never even seen as big a celebration in NY, even with one of the NY teams win a championship.

France took it to Italy in the second half, I thought for certain they were going to put one in and ultimatley win the game. Then Zidane had a brain cramp on the biggest stage on earth in his last game. I really have to wonder what the hell he was thinking.

Unfortunately, that is going to be the way he is ultimatey remembered for alot of people.

And Malouda should get the Oscar for thhe best dive of the tourney. He wasn't even touched, at all. Watch the replay.

Although I can't really blame the ref since it did look like there was contact in real time.

ITALIA #1!!!!!!!!!!!

For the Toronto people, I was on St. Claire from 10 this morining until 30 minutes ago... FUCKING NUTS!!!...Ive got 120 pictures of it, I will upload them tomorrow night... Absolutely nuts.... The party will most likely continue until 7:00 in the morning... SO many people, easy to get lost... So loud, so many people cheering, it was unreal, unlike anything in the world. I was debating whether or not to go down to St. Claire, Im SO glad I did, the party there is unlike anything Ive ever seen, people were partying like they were in Italy... nuts, absolutely nuts...

2006 World Cup Champions: ITALIA!!!!

I cant say that enough

Im so hyped up, that I cant sleep, and I might infact go back out and join the party again, its just so amazing...

Italy fans, they did it

Just got back from St Clair west. What a MESS. Hundreds of thousands of people. They had to close the road in little italy for 20 city blocks. Crazy.

Dom nice pics. The mass of people just went on, and on, and on. Maybe we bumped into each other.

As for the game, ..it was good, but the Germany game was much better.

I though Italy dominated the first half and should have been up 2-0. That PK was a total BS call. There was no contact. Maybe a brush at most. Second half was France's as Italy seemed to run out of steam. And then Zidane. What in the hell was he thinking? And what a way to end his career on the world stage. There is absolutely no excuse for that.

When the game went to PK's , I basically wrote Italy off. I thought it would be the '94 finals all over again when Baggio missed his PK and Brazil came out on top. But they nailed all 5, I couldnt beleive it. All in all, Italy deserves this cup. This wasnt their best game, but they were the best team of the tournament. I mean they didnt allow an opponenet to score a single goal untill the final game, and that was a PK.

It was a great world cup. Very entertaining, and this has been a great thread. We'll have to start another one in 2010

I agree that the first one was a dive, but he did get fouled in the box in the second half, which wasn't called. So all in all, i'd call it even.
