Ive been getting the occasional and seemingly random "tighten gas cap" message. It usually goes away quickly and the cap always feels tight. I have bought a new cap anyways but I cant seem to figure out how to remove the old one. The new cap comes with a tether already attached to it. So I need to remove the old tether from the gas door of the car. I've tried gently prying it up with a flathead screwdriver and squeezing it with needle nose plyers and nothing. Does anyone know how? Thanks in advance.
I have tried pushing on that. it doesn't seem to push through or move at all. Not sure if it helps but heres a picture of what the new tether looks like.
yank on the old tether. with enough force it'll come out.(Im basing this on the shape of the new tether's ball end.)
then you'll have to stuff the new ball end in.
disclosure; im a brute force kinda guy and i break my car OFTEN. dont listen to me
Tried the brute force yankin approach and i stopped because it felt like it was about to break. So its still on there and im hoping for other suggestions.

FWIW: Your tether anchor looks very similar to a 2014 Honda Civic fuel cap tether i recently replaced. On the Civic, the fuel door side of the tether is secured by a locking clip device. Using needle nose pliers, and applying pressure to the back sides of the clip, while pulling on the front side of the tether, quickly allowed the clip to release, If yours is the same type anchor, this YouTube video may help :
