So what happens if I tether without a tether plan?
Could they even know this? The tether plan is 59.99 a month and the normal unlimited pda plan is 39.99. I can tether it to my mac with blackberry drivers but I was curious would anything happen to my bill? How could they know?

When you tether, using sprint as an example the radius (AAA) username for authentication for your phone switches realms. (this is programmed into the phone to do this)
So when you register with the home agent they know you are tethered vs. untethered by looking at the realm.
Someone with a bit of know how could modify their handset to get around this... (don't ask I won't get into details)
