Apple: iPhone News and Discussion Thread
Is doing an OS 4.0 update on 3G worth it? I read a lot of people having issues with slow phones etc.. I am backing up my phone right now. Still not sure if I should do it or not.
I don't know if I have a 3G or 3Gs.

You do both and cancel your cable bill get a digital antennae so you can still pickup HD broadcast stations for free so you get most of your local sports games and then use espn3.com for everything else. Throw in a Windows 7 box with digital tuner and Media Center and you've got a kickass DVR/HTPC setup! with access to everything, hulu, netflix, espn3, and broadcast HD all on your big screen.
edit: Also we get zoom, spell check, folders. Nothing really significant for the 3G.

Feels like the heat is/was coming from where the a4 chip is supposed to be based off the ifixit teardown...
Actualluly it's more the logic board that is warm than the battery

Back up is complete now. What do I have to do in order to put all my stuff back in my phone once the new OS is installed?
here..
Speedemon90: Sounds like its probably not worth the trouble then.

Once you get 4.0 on your iphone, open up itunes, right click on your phone, click restore from backup. Then you should be able to choose your file and restore it. Pretty simple.
Soo iBooks is acting really weird for me, dunno if its due to the jailbreak or what, but whenever I try to download a book that sync option comes up and it says to press continue to sign in and all that. I click continue and I type in the password, then its starts downloading. 30 seconds later (or sooner) it comes up again. It will keep coming up until I see that bar for the book downloading full, then it comes up a final time. Type in the password. I'm waiting like 5 minutes, it still doesnt finish downloading. Tried reinstalling iBooks, same problem.

places that are on cable/HBO. But my kids watch Nick Jr and Boomerang 24/7 so I need that for now. Plus to do it on 3 TVs will be pricey. If I was a bachelor I'd have been cancelled my DirecTV. I don't think I'll subscribe to Hulu Plus since I really don't watch TV on my phone. When I commute I drive and the 30 mins I'm at lunch I read the paper. Plus I'm already a Netflix member so if anything I'll watch shows available on the queue for when that app comes out. I'm more happy that it's out there for competition to Netflix thus more technogical innovation.
Here's something someone can answer for me:
The maps app on the 3G is slow as balls...frozen in molasses. If you leave it on a contact page when you close it down, it takes an age for it to get into a useable searchable state again.
Any improvements? I would imagine it's faster. Also, anyone updated to 4.0 on their 3G notice any difference?

Ended up ordering it direct through Apple, since the $18 upgrade fee was waived through them (but not when I tried to order through at&t, weird). Now my order says shipping 7/26.
Oh well. It will probably ship earlier, but I'm not in a huge rush.
ehh not so much, but I still did it. Main reason, apps, soon all the new apps will require 4.0 or later.

If you haven't already done it. I would upgrade without the multitasking feature. Here's how: http://iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=10188
I called several at&t stores in the area yesterday, no phones. They told me the best bet is to order it and have it shipped to me within a week or so.

It all depends on what you watch. I'd do it in a heartbeat since I can get shows off of

You could get one HTPC and then get xbox 360s for the other TVs, it will act as a media center extender also you can do netflix, espn3 and Hulu plus with an xbox live gold account.
Change your kids watching habits! They watch Nick Jr cause it's on, they'll watch anything and forget all about nick, jr. in no time.

I got nieces at least. They come over and say they want to watch show X. I say bunk that garbage show we're watching toy story or lion king! The flip the shit out and call me the best uncle EVAR! and forget all about that garbage ass show they originally wanted to watch.
