A lot of you new members are probably experiencing a power steering whine in cold temps < 60F, which goes away as the engine compartment gets warm. The culprit is the o-ring on the PS pump inlet pipe. The o-ring has become glazed & lost it's original elasticity so it's contracting more than spec and allowing air to enter the pump when the temps drop. The fix is simple, replace the o-ring. For you guys who are a bit timid mechanically.. here's a simple DIY to guide you. I had a video but I couldn't find the original file. Although this should be very straightforward. Enjoy.




Tools Needed:

• 10mm wrench
• shop towels / paper towels

Parts Needed:

• New O-ring P/N: 91345-RDA-A01 (orange)

If I left anything out, feel free to add it. I changed the PS with new Honda PSF. I might be switching up to Redline Syn PSF since it's been almost a year since the change, let me know if you guys want a DIY on it.

The torque on the ps inlet bolt is only 8 lb.ft! That's almost finger tight so don't torque it down very much. Inacc the red ballons are from MS Word. Just change the fill color & transparency. I also forgot to include to rub a little ps fluid on the new o-ring.. I was conflicted with my junk ps fluid but I did so anyways. If you don't have fresh ps fluid around you can dip your pinky in the res & just smear a coat around the new o-ring before replacing the inlet tube.

^^^ None the less great DIY....this forum saved me $600 last winter....had exactly the same problem, but had the dealership fix it for me....didnt have to pay, so might as well !!!

 

I have the same issue. I'll see if the dealer will fix it under the "goodwill clause" as listed on the SB and report back. If not, I'm more than capable of completing this easy fix.

8 lb/ft is a lot more than finger tight -- perhaps you're thinking of 8 lb/in, not 8 lb/ft. Granted, 8 lb/ft isn't a lot and you do need to be careful not to twist off the bolt or strip the threads.

Personally, I think anyone who does any DIY on their car needs both a lower-range 3/8" and an upper-range 1/2" torque wrench. Even a cheap Harbor Freight set is better than nothing. But if you don't have a set, it's not too hard to visualize in your head how much force 8 lb/ft is. It's simply the amount of force applied by hanging an 8 pound weight on the end of a one foot long socket wrench. If you're using a small 4" long box end wrench, you'd need to apply 24 lbs of force to the end of the wrench (4" is 1/3 of a foot so you need to apply 3 times more downward force).

 

I wholeheartedly agree, but the only thing is it's such a tight squeeze to access that 10mm bolt that my 3/8 torque wrench wouldn't fit so I ended up feeling it out. My main concern was to not strip the threads, that's a pretty terrible feeling & something that eventually happens to you when you do DIY projects. It's happened a couple times to me while using a torque wrench when swapping the shocks & replacing brake pads.

Also Majofo does the 2G TL act in a similar manner, any clues ??? and I recently saw some air bubbles in my PS reservoir, is this normal or should i replace the o-ring ???

 

I took my car in last week to get this whine fixed. They said it wasn't the O-ring known issue, but instead it needed a new steering rack and pump. Grrrr...

Acura split the cost with me so I ended up having to pay $1050. I'm not done working with them on it as I don't think a steering system should fail after 106k miles on a decent car.

 

Talk to tripnbeats about that.. poor guy has replaced 3 pumps & 8 racks so far.

You're not insinuating I own a 2G TL are you? lol.. I did find a few related threads on that side but nothing like the 3G occurrence. If there's a very noticeable bubbling then there must be a air leak somewhere, hopefully not a fluid leak as well. I'd investigate it a little further.

Yeah there was some bubbling....not a fluid leak IMO coz the fluid level would do down gradually.....but yeah a definite air leak....prolly time to get a new o-ring !!!

 

can anyone please let me know how do i change the PS fluid after i done this?

 

also will it be an problem if there is air in the flud?

nice tip man. just saw another topic on this...

thought i add something to it for those that want to go out of the way to cure this problem.

in picture 5 of his post, find the p/s fluid neck off of another older model honda and replace it with the metal piece from that pump. that piece (sourced cheaply from a wreckign yard if possible) along with replenishing the brittle old o-ring will cure the expansion/contraction problems in your noisy cold p/s pump from air entering into unit.

No it's not a problem, the air is going into the pump and exiting the res. There's not a hydraulic issue like air in the braking system.

I'm planning on changing mine again soon. I'll do a DIY guide when I'm done. The main method is switching the return pipe & letting it drain out the system until it's dry by turning lock to lock while the car is on. I think there's another method of turkey basting the res, turning lock to lock & repeat but I'm not so clear if that really gets the old stuff out effectively.

Tell me about it.. My first car had some shaved gears on the flywheel so when I would turn it on it would make the most horrendous noise, although the PS whine is annoying & somewhat embarrassing it still ranks below that but slightly above squealing brakes & a worn AC compressor bearing.

I started getting the whine last week, extremely loud. Took it to the dealer since I have an extended warranty. They replaced the power steering pump and fluid. I only have 63,000 miles.

I went to Jackson Acura in Alpharetta, GA and they did the recall for free even though i was out of warranty... Whine is gone. They actually replace the hose assembly that has the rubber gasket in it. They also did the wiper motor breather tube for free as well... +1 for Jackson Acura.

 

I started having this noise last Monday, 12/14 on my '04 TL with 52K miles. Being not much of a DIY person, I took it to a dealer and they wanted to replace PS pump, etc. I told them to try your fix first. (I had had the TSB done last summer). They did the O-ring and changed the fluid. Guess what--NO MORE WHINING NOISE!! Surprise, Surprise!! They even called me back the next day to make sure everything is OK!! Charged me $75, but that is OK. Thanks for your help, I am sure it saved me several$$$.

but yeah if you wouldve gone with the PS pump you would be looking at around $1000 parts+labor.....

just drup off the car, they will replace the power steering hose and 0 ring and wiper motor under recall. this is an recall you do not need to do it yourself.

 

I get that squealing noise when its moist outside. I was told its just my belts, that they need to dry. But its getting kind of ridiculous. It sounds like I am driving a schoolbus. I never had this problem with my RSX type S or my civic. Could it be the same thing?

 

already took it in for the recall when it was first annouced.....it still does the noise. plus i no longer have warranty

Most everyone who had the recall done also had this problem as Fulani said so it's safe to say most shops aren't replacing the o-ring.

 

Just installed the new O ring with my father LOL............... hopefully it works and gets rid of the LOUD annoying noise. Have to wait tomorrow morning after the motor is cold, ill post up the results... Oh yea while we were under the hood i found out my motor mount is broken FML!!!! i was wondering why my shifts werent smooth LOL
