I just bought my TL 2 weeks ago and I have noticed the same thing. Great post, I am glad I found this thread sooner than later. I am going to try this because it sounds exactly like my issue.

 

Another big thanks. I did mine, the old one was hard and flat. No noise this morning or this afternoon. Apparently Acura is well aware of the issue. All I had to say at the parts department was the power steering o-ring and they knew exactly which one.

 

Same happened when I went in.. they didn't even need to look up the SKU.

 

This is just what the doctor ordered for my power steering after changing the timing belt.

Just picked up the o-ring from the Acura dealership today and replaced it. Great write up bro! It works!

 

i just replaced the o-ring yesterday and unfortunately it's still making noise. i might need to buy a new power steering pump... sigh.
funny because this didn't started till it started getting cold. and it does get quieter once the car warms up but the sound does not completely go away. maybe it's supposed to make a little noise? i dont know. i DID have the hood up as i was testing it, and i could still hear the noise when turning the wheel but it was not as loud.

 

You will be able to hear a perfectly good pump with the hood up. If you can't hear it in the car with the windows down, you're good to go.

OMG...AZ and Majofo strike again...
Started for me a week ago...and it is driving me friggin BONKERS.

I'll stop by Acura and replace the O ring tomorrow...If it fixes it, I'll have to buy you a beer if you're ever in the 954

Funny enough, I did notice that the area around the plastic intake where the O ring sits has some remnants of fluid as if it DOES leak slightly and allow air in. And I would NOT be surpised to learn that the dealer didn't change the ring.

 

My 2007 RDX just started with this god awful noise. Anyone here having the same issue w/their RDX? Does the same fix apply? Is the o-ring part number the same and do Honda dealers keep it in stock?

I know the part # for the red o-ring was given already. What's the part # for the black one?

I might as well do both at the same time.

 

Just like the TL, my RDX quiets down once it's warmed up. So I'm going to give the o-ring a try.

BTW, the RDX part number (for the red o-ring) is... 91345-PAA-A01.

My Honda dealer has it in stock. I'm also buying a few bottles of PSF, and will flush the system while I'm at it.

I'll report back later today after the operation is complete.

Thanks. That's what I thought. I was a bit confused as to why the smaller O-Ring became "RDA" from "PAA", but the larger O-Ring didn't have a newer part #.

 

The red O-Ring cost me $0.63, and the black O-Ring cost me $0.72 @ the Honda stealership.

 

I got ripped off! Mine was $.77 lol.

Yes. This is one of the only fluids where you must stick with OEM or Amsoil. Nothing else.

 

o0o yea and does the noise start as soon as you turn your wheel ...cause every morning my car is starting up louder than before ...idk if its cause its cold out now ?

Just swap it out. It won't cause instant damage but you don't want to leave it in there forever. Usually the Honda dealers will have the fluid much cheaper than Acura.

When the o-ring goes bad, the noise is worse when it's cold. Mine went almost completely away once it got hot. With the cold fluid you have more suction on the suction side so it pulls more air in which makes the sound.

my sound didn't go away...
now that I listened more closely, it doesn't sound like it's the pump or the alternator...I am leaning toward the tensioner pully.
I need to figure out which part number it is to replace to get rid of this dreadful sound.

my noise went away months ago just randomly. now i have to replace a leaky reservoir and fully expect it to start making noise again.

 

I took off the belt today, and spun the pulleys and have narrowed it down to what I think are coming from these two.

I don't spin them fast enough to reproduce the noise, but the lower one sounded like my rollerblade bearings when I get sand in em. Maybe that one? Anyone know what the part number to replace both these pullys might be?

I also tried using the long piece of metal and my ear method and power steering pump seems pretty quiet as did the alternator...these 2 were loudest, the bottom one the worst. Any other possibilities for my noise?

 

Both of those pulleys go to your auto tensioner. It's $126 @ acuraoemparts.. You might find it cheaper at AZ or AAP.



It's Part #2: 31170-RCA-A02

You need to remove the long bolt securing the lower pulley #8 and the short bolt #15 underneath the lower pulley to remove the belt auto tensioner as illustrated below:

So the WHOLE assembly is $126...I guess it would make sense to get that. Is this the piece that everyone is getting noise from. I would hate to get it and then find out it's NOT the noise.

 

It's a very common issue.. many of the regulars here have had it. If you check the assembly there are two marks on top that should be visible where the arm retracts. If the arm doesn't line up within those marks then it is out of spec.
